K6BD thread? New page is up.

In retrospect it was really broadcasted that Cio had one name at one point.

I also have this crack theory going that Cio and Oscar used to be one and the same devil.

So uh, I guess Vladok is a she now? Or was Vladok always a she? If he became a she, then why? Are all blue devils she's? Or is it because the name that Allison (we) gave her starts with "princess"?

Oh look, she got her hat back.
>>
>>77767730

When he unmasked himself, Vladok pretty much ripped his own 'self' out of his ody and allowed it to devolve back into the Hot Black Flame. Before it dissipated entirely, though, it was wreaking havoc with what direction Vladok was able to impart on it--it's not mindless per se, but when unmasked it no longer has a real sense of self.

Allison then slapped a mask on that mass of chaos, and congealed it into a new 'self', Princess Esquire. Because she is, technically the same being as Vladok, she'll eventually be able to dredge up memories from before Vladok unmasked, but there's a whole lot of formless confusion for her mind to work out first.

She'll probably have to work as a bar imp to pay off the tab, too.

The start was kinda slow but recently the artist has been extremely prodigious, 2-3 new pages per week, and we usually have threads for each new page to argue about obscure plot points and worldbuilding mechanics. I highly recommend giving it a read, more than one if you have the time. The worldbuilding can be kinda dense and hard to grasp immediately. Just be sure to read the alt text and the supplements posted below each page. I'd recommend the wiki if it was being regularly updated.

>>
>>77769129
Doesn't that make it even worse? It now an asexual that thinks it's male but pretends it's female or some shit. It's an entirely senseless character conflict
>>
>>77769145
No, it's an asexual being who knows its asexual developing a feminine perception of self. Also not conflicted about it.
>>
>>77769145
There are characters in the story that bring up that exact point, ridiculing them for being concerned about "insipid gender." It's pretty well handled in context and it's hardly a major focus of the story, at least so far.
>>
>>77769129
That actually sounds like a cool character, or at least an interesting concept. It's the blue chick who gives me pause, like she's the fan favorite, she's in all the fanart and she's hitting on the MC. The two of them getting together is going to be forced by the fans so hard that I don't even want to bother with it.
>>
>>77769166
Yeah, I'm concerned about Cio as well. I trust the author to not let his comic get bogged down by it, though. There is some fan-driven content but it seems like Abbadon knows how to sift through the bullshit effectively enough. If he didn't, the devil on the newest page would be called Tuxedo Mask.
>>
>>77769166
She's never actually hit on the MC, she actually thinks the MC is an idiot.
>>
>>77769156
It doesn't like being called she though, and is embarrased by it's feminine form. Seems like it perceives itself as male, or at least not female.
>>
>>77769166
I don't even get why people like Cio. Trans angel and 6 juggy are more interesting
>>
>>77769191
Nah, son. Their spirit form is decidedly feminine, they just reject that label because of the connotations and because their superiors don't like angels concerned with gender and refer to members of their order as "brothers"
>>
>>77769199
have you seen her hat?
>>
>>77769191
It's embarassed by its human form. Other angels are Bulls with whells instead of heads, motorbikes made of skeletons and similar things. The problem is not "feeling feminine", the problem is "feeling so much human that thinking in gender term make sense at all".
>>
>>77769186
I would like to read a supernatural adventure comic with a female MC, the art is amazing and it gives me a kind of Hellboy vibe. The difference is, for some reason two women in a story means they have to be kissing each other or killing each other but nobody ships Hellboy because it's a waste of time.
>>
>>77769212
6juggy is a humaniod on a motorbike. He still looks human, just has accessories. Thwn there was whatever the purple one was named

>>77769199
6 Juggernaut Star has nothing going for him other than a rockin' introduction and great design. We know his motivations but practically nothing of his personality. Cio is most interesting when trying to make Allison act like a Campbellian hero archetype.
>>
>>77769053
>we usually have threads for each new page to argue about obscure plot points and worldbuilding mechanics

Don't forgot about how Abbadon did the mistake of drawfagging on /d/ once and the comic is only moments from turning into a magical realm of the worst kind and about literally the sex of the angels.

I've only started reading it and I know that's exactly where it'll end up.

Okay, theory time - Cio stole Mammon's key. Furthermore, that key has not been recovered by him, and he somehow got another one instead. This explains what I previously thought was an inconsistency in the key shapes.

In the first image showing the young Demiurges, as narrated by Cio, Mammon has a cross-shaped key. Then, as White Chain narrates their rise to power, it first shows Mammon with the cross-shaped key during the War, then again with the same key as the Seven form their pact, but suddenly, he has a completely different key when White Chain talks about how they are still in power (and crazy). It makes sense to me that the Ebon devil implied to be Cio right now stole Mammon's original key at some point between the end of the War and the current story.

I could be completely wrong since technically the shape isn't 100% the same and the one here might just be a depiction of a generic key of kings, but it's fun to theorize.
>>
>>77769734
Each of the demiurges has 111,111 keys (or close to it).

Yeah, White Chain and Juggsy hate-fucking is...of interest. Even if they don't have the physical bits to do it, just the twp of them being attracted to each other and HATING IT.

Especially on 6 Jugg's part, I could see 'him' just being emotionally destroyed by it all. Like, he should kill White Chain and..just...can't....

Oh, the delicious tears.

That said, Cio now has a new love interest!

Blueberry Esquire and her make a super-sweet couple, and they OBVIOUSLY have a lot in common, both being fallen Ebon's and all....

>>
>>77770443
Trick a human who is making a deal with you into calling you by fewer names.

Names can also get old and weaker though, so taking on more names and then shedding the older ones to maintain power might be a viable tactic for them.
>>

>Thinks Hellboy is not rife with gay ships too.
I know it's annoying to have gay stuff in your comics, but most of them don't have it as the focus of the story, so you can ignore it pretty easy.

Just like all gay people have to when watching almost any media that is not a webcomic.
>>
>>77769053
Never felt the need to read the supplements, they just seem like gibberish to me. Are they worth reading? I understand the lore fine without them.
>>
>>77767730
Alright, so that's 15 names.

And we also know Cio Cioelle Estrella von Maximus the third.
I'm going to assume that's six names.

It took at least seven names before the demon formerly known as Vladok was shrunk down to red, and at least 12 until he became blue.

So is Cio intentionally staying blue?
>>
>>77770612
What better cover is there for anyone who may be hunting an ebon that stole a key?
>>
>>77770721

Where did that come from? The implications here are clearly that Cio used to be Ebon (White Chain said SHE stole the key, the Ebon in the image resembles her current mask, Oskar's comment about how she "looks good in blue", implying she was a higher color before, the fact that she kicks serious ass despite being a low-ranking devil).
>>
>>77770742
Sorry, cover FROM.

Cio is hiding.
>>
>>77770761

Oh, gotcha. Thought this was one of those "everything points to X, so OBVIOUSLY it's actually Y" deals.
>>
>>77770721
>>77770761
But is it possible for a demon to maintain their current form despite having shed enough names to ascend to the next color?

Is ranking up a thing that a demon must choose to do even after meeting all the criteria to do so?

I guess that would make sense so as to not raise suspicion when the human who gets tricked into shedding names from a demon doesn't realize they've done it when the blue demon they have a contract with suddenly turns red.

Not necessarily. It could very well be explained by saying that the names Allison gave here are more potent than usual because of her Key of Kings, so it took "only" 15 names to degrade an Ebon to Blue.

>What flaws did you see? Can you name any examples?

Like I said, the tone can shift too suddenly to feel natural.

Off the top of my head, in the last few pages, after Vladok breaks his mask, Allison goes from being terrified to "I'm drunk as hell and have no idea what I'm doing!" and "In the name of the moon, and all this delicious-ass liquor!" within the span of a few panels. A transition that quick is awesome if it includes something to show the transition. In this case, it's too jarring, like going from A to C with no B.

In particular, I think this example could be easily fixed. Instead of "I'm drunk as hell and have no idea what I'm doing!", it could be something a little more frightened like "I-I'm drunk as hell! What do I do now!?". Then, after being told to name the devil, she becomes confident. Put a "Well in that case --" before the "In the name of the moon!", and it would seem much better to me.

I realize that it's incredibly difficult to balance the transitions like this with pacing and per-page-content, but it's something all writers must master. I believe Abaddon won't have much trouble doing this with time.

Sorry, that should be "A shift that quick is awesome if it includes something to show the transition."

I feel that if I'm critiquing someone else's writing, mine shouldn't be quite as clunky as that unchanged sentence.

I'm not a western comics aficionado, but manga has a tendency of going too far in the other direction.

Abaddon's trying to tell a story here, though, which is vastly different from manga and cape comics, which just try to show off powerful superhumans fighting. Conveying the important stuff, external events and the internal processes of the characters, in an efficient manner that flows well is something everyone struggles with. This is a challenge to be tackled head-on, otherwise you'll end up as either mangoes or just more capeshit that even fans of both genres hate.

>>
>>77774684
Her expression in the "I'm drunk as hell" panel looks more awkward than frightened to me. The dialogue doesn't really convey fear, either.

"I'm drunk as hell and have no idea what I'm doing!" is something a lovable underdog in a Michael Bay movie would say while driving a fire truck through a burning skyscraper to rescue some inner-city orphans. Michael Bay movies are alright, but suddenly adopting their tone seems counterproductive in a comic which trying to portray a more down-to-earth character.

Honestly, I'm not even complaining about the fact that the comic's tone went in that direction. I just think it wasn't conveyed well due to leaving out the transition from "terrified" to "confident/devil-may-care".

The mods apparently deleted my first response to this, even though it was measured and entirely reasonable. I'll be brief this time.

"I'm drunk as hell and have no idea what I'm doing!" seems more awkward and devil-may-care to me than frightened. It's something a goofy action movie hero would say while driving a firetruck through a burning skyscraper to save some orphans.

I don't think there's anything wrong with Allison having this attitude, but a few panels earlier she was screaming and starting to tear up. I would be fine with this if there was something before this that showed her composing herself or cheering up or something. As it is, it seems to sudden for me really feel it.

There's a piece of text explaining that the White masks (weakest of the devil cast) have an incredibly long string of names and Ebon Devils (the strongest) have just one.
As for the concept of a true name it does not apply to Devils since their essence is made from the black flame of Yis that got thrown into the void by Koss, later these clumps of chaotic flame got given identities by binders and the Devils themselves then start shaping their identity.

It's also implied that there's this fucking horrible Devil monster that can keep his shape and dosen't have a name; he's the exception.

The neat thing here is that Pallid devils are stated to have hundreds of names. Does the growth in power from name loss change exponentially?
>>
>>77775316
I see many anons talk about a nameless devil king, is in some of the texts or from the early forum version of k6bd? I'd wanna read about him
>>
>>77775577
I'd be willing to bet it is a functon of how many/who gave them.
Like really powerful mage could give you one and bump you down a whole level or you could get twenty from someone weak and not bat an eye.
There is also probably a point where no matter how many names you are given you can't get much weaker.
>>
How exactly does a devil get rid of its names, is it a ritaul? Do they trick some human to de-name them?
>>
>>77770318
its more like apply labels to them. giving them names and labels reduces their power by giving shape to their natural formlessness. this is most similar to jinn
>>
>>77775577
Maybe the more common the name the lesser its effect?
>>
>>77775756
seems to be some sort of ritual to it. the rituals may be a bit casual though. like, cio has been called Cio many times, and still is blue. So there is more to it then JUST casually calling them a single name. Maybe it requires a handshake as well. GIVING Princess her names, required a mask possibly to just replace the broken one, an actual contract with Allison in their challenge, and Allison making use of her key. Now, its possible not all of these were required. Perhaps the key was just required to put her back into the mask after the first was shattered.
>>
>>77775611
Shit Anon, give me a bit and I'll post in the next thread; it could just be a rumour.

Also the old msp of K6BD is worth checking out, it serves to flesh out Alison a bit more and it's fun to read.

>>
>>77775909

I think normally it's a complicated process with a whole lot of magic and ritual involved. Those three devil-binders were going to have to make a team effort of it, probably shackling it in place first, doing some kind of magic to force the demon's body to accept the mask, another one for actually binding the mask on there, probably more for each name they want to add, and so on. Allison has the power of not just *a* key of kings, but *the* key of kings, so she can just slap a mask on the rampaging demon, and shout some random vaguely official-sounding "YOUR NAME IS PRINCESS MAMORU MOONSHINE JAGERMEISTER JACK JACCK DANIELS TIMOTHY TIM BILL FREDDY MERCURY BLUEBERRY LUNA ESQUIRE NOW", and poof, she's got herself a blue devil.

Removing names seems like it'd be a less power-intensive ritual, because you've got an eager participant in the devil, and because it just seems like it'd be easier to go "Jacck is not one of your names anymore". It's kind of like compressing air--it takes a lot of work to force it into a smaller container, but to release that power you just have to give it an opening. But given how Throne isn't flooded with high-rank devils, it's probably fairly complex to know *how* to pull off, and that information is closely guarded.
>>

I think its like >>77775830 said.
Thats what made me wonder, since both the up- and down ranking implied getting many names.
But maybe its the form of the name? Like the name should show-off how popular the devil is? Maybe like devils take their power from humans believing in them?

LIke i give a devil the name "surtur the destroyer, souleater and highest dark priest".
It implies he is strong. Maybe many humans believe to fear him.

But does he get a name "Tanok, the lowest devil, footlicker of the devil" noone fears him and dont get much "believing" or "popularity?

So a name with Princess and not powerfull sounding/meaning will downgrade the devil.
And i dont believe "Freddy Merkury" was refferred to his music power.

So every demon want better, powerfuller names and fears to loose names that indicate how powerfull he is.
So the humans wont empower him with tehir believe in him.
>>
>>77776118
No they wanted to fight it away. Back to the void and shit.
They diddn't even think about doing such a rackless but simple thing Alice did.
>>
>>77776212
But Princess alone would have made him/her/it an ebon
>>
>>77776311
maybe he was too powerfull.
And you can have the surname "princess of torture".
Its just my thoughts since the page implies names to get higher, grown oild name to downgrade him.
The newest page is contradicting to this before. relaterd to the "amount of names"

But if i take "other-colored names" to rank up, it sounds as if these are powerfuller names, maybe fear inducing?
And "a lovely gold, my name caused fear and dread" in the second panel indicates that princess wasnt enough since it wasnt grown old, aka forgotten, not praised in horror.

But its just the pages i can consider. not was is intended.

She's someone who created a fake jock persona to get popular, and who was literally in the process of getting fucked by some creep just to check the "not a virgin" box on her life resume. Also confirmed to be a sorority drunkie.

Also, she is by leaps and bounds the most fleshed out character in the strip.
>>

she's human though. We're blinded to her becuase everything and everyone around her is 10,000 times more interesting, unless related to the story.
Cio's crushing on her so hard because she wants to make her the hero of a new legend and heroes are really attractive
>>
Id wager that the whole giving/taking names revolves around striking a bargain with a devil and very much relies on saying the name correctly. As with most devils in lore and folktales you both need to know their true name (perhaps in this case all of it) and their might be spells etc to force the devil to tell you its names. It is likely that striking a contract would involve a bargain wherein the deal is struck conditional on removing a name (on a side note it's likely that if you removed too many names it would level up and overpower you, another trope of demon lore). I think the free naming spree that occurs with vladok is probably a strange occurance because of the presence of an incredibly powerful key and that vladok became formless chaos whereas presumably normally he would of had a degree of control, or potential to overpower the mage (its likely his name was too old and weak to do this with more experienced mages).
>>
>>77777250
That is not much for a MC. And with some pages in her earth with her friends.

For Cio there is more. she is a devil, a blue devil, lowest rank.
Than she does jobs for a certain higher devil, kinda slave prostitute devil.
Like a goon but now she likes to use allison for herself. Kinda?
She is not the "full bad" devil, rescues Allison, helps her. For her purposes?
Likes to smoke and drink, clothing is more proper and implies she is a merchant like type, like she deal with other persons. Kinda outsmarting the odds she encounters.
Not really straight as it seems, likes fanfiction. Quite skilled in magic.
Than we have the full devil background, that implies that she wants to uprank.
She seems to know how her world works.

Clio is more like the vigilante.

you've got to read between the lines. Cio wants to write Allison's legend by guiding her and insert herself as the love interest of the great hero. Also she thinks she's hot.

Say you have Bobby Jaques Pebble Fjord Beakus. If he gets rid of one of those names he just becomes Bobby Jaques Pebble Fjord. Still a nobody.
But if he, say, killed seven giants in one strike, then he'd be Bobby Jaques Pebble Fjord Seven-With-One-Blow. The latest name actually carries weight, it'll be the bit that everyone remembers. So Bobby wants to lose those first four names but keep the last one.

and the ol' ebon devil's problem was that, in this case, he'd managed to ditch all the other names, but got complacent and his 'seven-with-one-blow' incident lost all relevance. He became a has-been. a 'what have you done lately?'

successfully market yourself such that no one remembers the name(s) you want to lose. "Who the fuck is Farrokh Bulsara? Is there such a person? I've never heard of them." said the student with a Freddie Mercury poster.
You catch my drift?

For demons that live for millenia it probably involves killing everyone that used to know you and hasn't reincarnated yet,.

she has a positive association with Blue since Cia is the closest thing to a friend she has among the devils

The key is ALL the names of god, where all the others are just one.
Supreme power, but wielded by the most inexperienced person.

>She out-drank an ebon demon head-to-head
she 'was' cheating. Cia had her swallow a paper voodoo doll that took the brunk of the alchohol

I get the impression she calls it fanfiction to underplay what she's doing.
I remember ina Whitewolf game, I think it was either changeling the lost, or it's successor, one of the clans/archetypes focused around the power of narratives. For example, you're trying to crack a safe that you have no clue what the combination is, and you've already gotten it wrong twice. Such a person could invoke the trope 'third times the charm' and get it right, the power to drive the narrative down the path they want.
I'd wager that Cia used to be a historian, and her loss of rank came from deciding that revisionism, even revisionism as it happens, is a more powerful tool than just knowledge.

The real question here is given that demons are defined by their names, and Princess Blueberry is Princess Blueberry, Esquire, does that mean she has a natural aptitude for being a lawyer now?

>Princess Blueberry gets stuck with Vladok's tab that he was able to run up because he was an Ebon
>Nobody wants to bother making a pact with a blue devil with a giant pile of names.
>Only option is working at the bar.
>The work is okay, but the wages are tiny
>dream of a better future
>save up puny wages to afford books
>stay up every night studying
>get into demon law school
>graduate top of demon class
>pass demon bar exam
>join demon law firm, become demon prosecutor
>bring demon class action lawsuits against prominent schools of binders for mistreatment of imps
>Allison conquers Throne
>get appointed Chief Justice of demon Supreme Court

I thought esquire was just a title for someone without any other titles.
>>

In the UK, yeah. In the U.S. It's mainly a lawyer thing.
>>
>>77789884
It was originally a title for those with enough knowledge of law to make rulings in a lords court.
In the U.S. must lawyers can still use it, but in other places it is just a random title now.

Jesus christ, why did I wait a year to start reading this?

You may be on to something but Vladok wasn't in a bad position. He was coasting with his last name.
>>
>>77790923
He definitely seemed rather bitter about his circumstances

We didn't see her swallow it so she didn't. Otherwise she wouldn't have gotten drunk. It was all ison's drinking skills.
>>
>>77790795
So you'd have more to read
>>

Maybe but there's nowhere to go from where he is with that one name so I don't think his relevance mattered. He was even able to easily shed his mask so I think he was up there in power. Certainly not the most powerful.

It's based on eastern religions and especially the works of Michael Kirkbride. Think less bisexuals and more lovecraftian genders and penises that are actually fractal skeletons made out of metaphors.
