It knew what it was. It didn't pretend to be all deep and critical. It remembered its characters and how they all interacted. When they got development, they were developed and not just tossed aside afterward. It was fully aware of the story and the worlds it was in and didn't have to sacrifice plot for dumb kid humor to keep an audience. It was serious and gritty without coming off as an edge fest. They didn't censor shit either. Compared to what was on then and even now, it was ahead of its time.

This. People are getting killed and tortured but getting a driver's license is a focus? This show should have had a more progressive, proactive plot than just resting on one general setting.

Agree. The animation was really good but not Tumblr-esque. A little Tezuka style but not overtly anime. The characters were all well defined as individuals and in how their relationships. Characters grew and became more interesting over time. Lore was and over arcing story was there but not annoying. An entire episode that references Ender's Game that was actually better than the movie. There was no chance the two main leads were going to fuck. They had the balls to kill off a multiple characters. Great voice acting.
