I've just watched Judge Dredd and it was pretty great. Is the comic worth to read? Do I have to start from the beggining or can I just read the better ones?
>>
>>77747269
>I've just watched Judge Dredd
Then why did you post an image from a different movie?
You posted a pic of the shitty Dredd 3D abortion.

If you liked Dredd 3D stay away from the comics, you'll hate them.
They aren't boring piece of shit action movies.
>>
>>77747281
Ignore this nigger

Comics are very good, but can be a bit dated and cheesy at first. But once you know the premise you can read just about any arc, they're pretty self contained

Ignore this nigger.

Start from the beginning and go from there.
Get the case files. But, again, they are nothing like that horse shit of a movie so don't go in expect it.
The comics have science fiction and satire themes not present in the movie.
>>
>>77747311
The movie was a bit cheesy at times too. I don't think I would be bothered by that.
>>77747329
What's so bad about the movie? It was a fun action movie to spend some time on. The drug effects were pretty neat, too. Nothing spectacular, but it was a nice movie.
>The comics have science fiction and satire themes not present in the movie.
That actually sound pretty good.
>>
>>77747378
>What's so bad about the movie?
It completely strips the concept of the Judge Dredd universe of anything it doesn't need to be turned into an action movie. The villain is a nobody who does nothing. MegaCity is just Los Angeles with Blocks photoshopped in and the whole city photoshopped into a desert. The costume work is laughable and the Judge's are wearing hockey pads. Judge Dredd breaks the law in the movie. Thy were so desperate to make a movie full of effects that they literally shoehorned in a plot reason for excessive slow motion. The entire movie takes place in a single setting. The overall movie has little to no variety in its content. The civilians in this science fiction future wear hoodies and t-shirts.
>>
Another guy. What are some good arcs to start out with? Something good to give a guy some interest and give a nice starter into the entire series.
>>
>>77747468
My personal suggestion would be "Block Mania" because its not too far into the comic while still being a big story.

So. What we got was an approximation of more modern Dredd books, stuff from the 90s, with the british silliness taken out, and the story stripped down to make it something that the average person who knows nothing about Dredd could enjoy. But still references some things and gets the attitude of the characters correct, and shows the general idea of basic concepts of the universe. And this was horrible? What, do you want another Stallone Dredd where they homage things no normie would know about but hamfist everything about the story and characters?

Besides there is some comic stories based on the movie setting and it just turns out as blacker Dredd and still shoes in some classic stuff like robots and such.

>What, do you want another Stallone Dredd where they homage things no normie would know about but hamfist everything about the story and characters?
That movie would've been gold with some easy fucking fixing. #1, Dredd doesn't take off the helmet, #2 remove Schneider, #3 remove the love interest subplot.

The set work, the costume work and everything else were extremely superior to the bland action movie we got that some retarded fucks actually think could've lead to sequel with Judge Death, a character so fantasy like that it would make a movie with Dredd 3Ds tone look like a fucking joke.

And btw, the Stallone movie HARDLY hamfisted shit. There was no Judge Fish, no Walter the Wobot, no Judge Giant or Whitey.

>>
>>77747590
It would have been gold if they removed everything but Hammersmith and added six other robots.
But seriously fixing that movie would have required alot more fixing. All they set out to do was give a vague setting of the universe and then have fun with it. Honestly, with a character that's fought Xenomorphs and Batman, along with having had some of the darkest stories in 2000ad history, having him kill people for an hour and a half was about the best thing you could have hoped for from a modern adaptation. There was no character assassination, no overt rewriting essential plot elements or setting pieces, beyond the budget limitations that restricted some of the setting.
And you forget that the whole idea of bringing the Dark Judges in was said in an interview two fucking years after the movie came out, and only when prompted by the interviewer. Nobody planned for a sequel, they knew the fact they got funded was a miracle itself.

And yeah. Rob Schneider existing, Dredd having that level of retarded overacting emotion, codpieces, even managing to fuck up Mean Machine....they got the setting design right, that's about it, bud.
>>
>>77747609
Judge Death/Judge Death Lives

Batman v Dredd is pretty good too, if for nothing else but sweet, sweet Bisley paintings.
>>
>>77747648
>Nobody planned for a sequel
Then why the fuck were they pushing so fucking hard for one when the goddamn movie flopped, asshole?
And the director said he always planned on the story leading to the Dark Judges eventually.

>There was no character assassination
DREDD BROKE THE LAW

>no overt rewriting essential plot elements
They made Dredd a lawbreaker, they changed Anderson's origins, they shoehorned slow motion into the plot.
>>
>>77747619
>>77747685
It was his assessment, he can set whatever rules he wants.
>>

>>
>>77747685
A facebook page asking people to buy the DVD constitutes PUSHING HARD?

Dude, Anderson's origin before was just...appearing, getting possessed and then getting frozen in plastic. They're not going to make a movie that BAM everything is perfectly set up with no lead up or explaination of 30 years of comics.
And you keep carrying on with this concept like making a judgement on a training call being anything beyond that. This CHARACTER ASSASSINATION just seems like butthurt about everything else being directed at a single line that had no impact, and that nobody else has ever mentioned noticing.
>>
>>77747746
He didn't, though. I'm not sure why you think think this.

It's not the law, it's a judgement on a recruit that ultimately led to the judgement and death of the individual who took it, and which subsequent actions saved the adjucator's life.
>>
>>77747752
>A facebook page asking people to buy the DVD constitutes PUSHING HARD?
YES. Them begging people to buy the dvd and bluray JUST so they could make a profit on the turd of a movie they made was all done with the promise of a sequel, which thankfully doesn't look like its going to fucking happen.

>>77747759
Dredd didn't write the book on how an assessment is done and the law says if a recruit loses their weapon they automatically fail.

Eat my load. Dredd was one of the best low-budget action movies in years, and one of the only Die-Hard knockoffs to actually use its environment in a comparable way.

And the soundtrack was 11/10.

Dredd 3D was a cheap knockoff of The Raid. Go eat a bag of dicks, faggot.

The Dredd screenplay was written years before The Raid was even a thing. Gareth Evans made The Raid as a glorified stunt reel to get the money for the sequel, there's a reason it barely has a screenplay.

The early Judge Dredd comics are goofy as fuck but it's really awesome that way. As long as you understand what you are getting into there's no reason you wouldn't like it. You just need to realize that they aren't super serious comics, they are satire in a very kitchen sink science fantasy setting about an ultra fascist cop. At times Dredd may come off as an action hero, but when he's set to deal with common civilians you quickly come to realize that he's a dick that takes his job way too seriously and is not really much of a hero either.
>>
>>77747431
I personally feel they made a smart choice stripping Dredd back to the bare bones. There's only so much information you can fit in 90 minutes and with a limited budget.
>>
>>77748006
All it shows is how small their imagination is and how shit they are at their jobs.

You're clearly on a good hate Anon, but while I don't agree it was better as a Dredd movie Demolition Man was a damn good fit for 2000AD.

Stallone Dredd was a bit like Lynch Dune - there was a ton of beautiful illustrations of the source material but ultimately it failed as an adaptation.

Assante does have kind of a family resemblance to Stallone actually, not as twins of course, but certainly siblings.

>>77748620

>>
>>77748688
Robocop did a pretty good job of being a cartoony live action film with an R rating. Besides, if anything what hurt Dredd 3D the most was lack of any real advertising, I barely heard anything about the film until the last month before it's release. It's hard to get people to see a movie they don't know about.
>>
>>77748720
I think you've nailed it there the lack of promotion was the thing that hurt Dredd most at the box office. Seems like Lionsgate lost faith although looking at some of their other realses it's possible they are just shit at promotion.

Also Robocop is probably the best Dredd movie we will ever see but i think they would find it very hard to make that movie today.

Have you even read a Dredd story? The settings vary from nuclear waste land to one building to space. Hell couple months back we had an entire story dealing with Dredd as a block judge. And after that we got another with the Dead judges confined to a space ship. Megazine had a setting that looked like a modern day farm.

As for looks, again cits vary all the time. Last prog Dredd beat the shit out of a biker gang in tshirts and blue jeans.

>Drokkers are still whining about "Dredd should've failed Anderson for losing his weapon a-bloo bloo bloo"
Then I guess he should've failed both Giants as well in the comics. Which he didn't. Or he should've sent Anderson or DeMarco to Titan for their crimes. Which he didn't. Or he should've brought the Judge Child back. Which he didn't.
Folks need to understand that the last thing Dredd wants on the streets is an army of robo-judges who know nothing but the book. Look at the Mechanismo fiasco. He values initiative and a certain degree of individual thought, and wants his cadets to have a keen sense of judgment of their own. Beyond his cynical exterior, he wants judges who wholeheartedly believe they're doing the right thing, who believe in justice, and believe that the Law is the best way to achieve that justice. And in my eyes, anyone who doesn't get that just hasn't read enough Judge Dredd.

By the way, was I alone in thinking the Chief Judge was kinda scouting out telepaths? She seemed very eager to have Anderson pass, enough to order her best officer to assess her. I think she was looking to bolster the ranks with metas.
