I know both of them are shit compared to Hanna-Barbera, but which newer version of Tom & Jerry do you prefer?
I've heard most people say the Jones shorts are better and the Deitch ones are "too mean-spirited" (inb4 MrEnter), but I've also heard others say the trippy atmosphere of Deitch is funnier than the cutesiness of Jones.

Chuck Jones had fucking hilarious faces for Tom, coming very close to Grinch expressions. Deitch's "Switchin' Kitten" episode is such a technical disaster that it feels like art to me, and I've heard he made a couple good shorts. He didn't initially mash well with the show, because he was from UPA and didn't like violence. This is sort of a conflicting opinion from him, given that he cast fucking Clint Clobber as Tom's owner.

I feel that it's more of an 80's and maybe early 90's thing. That sort of thing doesn't really happen often with modern cartoons.
As for why the trend started in the first place, as far as I've been able to tell it was basically because The Muppet Babies was pretty successful.
