It literally doesn't. Slapstick isn't about telling a gripping story. It's about making people laugh. If people are laughing, then it works, regardless of whether the character causing the laughter is well written.

The key word here is "featured". Daffy played opposite Bugs in a shitload of those. Hell, Bugs was even in Duck Amuck.
They are two very different characaters who were often put in very different themes. It's hard to compare them.
Bugs was often a little more witty. Which had the drawback of his episode being easier to fail. He was often the straight man in a crazy world, but was self aware of this.
Daffy is just the crazy man in a crazy world whose antics would often put him in trouble and then we'd see the fall back of him getting into trouble.

It's clear that both bugs and daffy know that they're in cartoon show and therefore know that ridiculous shit is going to happen to them. The difference is that Bugs keeps a clear head and outsmarts the writers; knowing he's the main character probably doesn't hurt either. Daffy, knowing he's a bit of a fall guy anyway, consistently loses his shit.

It's a Han Solo situation, where you have a main star that has to abide by certain rules, and a rouge wildcard that just does what he wants. Everyone loves Han, but you need Luke, otherwise the whole setup doesn't make sense. You need Bugs so that Looney Tunes is not just over-the-top crazy assholes and wannabe rapists. Same thing happened with Mickey and Donald.

Why do I have to watch this? I already know what I think of Chuck Jones from watching his cartoons. I'm not the same as the other guys, I like him, What's Opera Doc, etc., but I think Clampett's Daffy was better, and overall I like Clampett better.
