Can we have a thread about this master? Who else goes from Neal Adams imitation to basically inventing a new style? Without him there's no David McKean and no David Mack. No Elektra Assassin. No Stray Toasters. Moon Knight doesn't exist without him, or at least isn't interesting.

He definitely is one of the singular artists of the 1980s, although his more idiosyncratic work might be an acquired taste for some.
Saw him at a convention I was covering for work a year ago, although he wasn't on his best behavior (or so I'd heard): He missed a couple of major panel appearances, including a "Spotlight on Bill Sienkiwicz" panel. Rumor was that he had partied too hard or something at a local pub during the second day of the con and couldn't keep his subsequent con commitments. (The official story the con organizers gave to the press and disappointed fans was that Sienkiwicz had "difficulty adjusting to the time zone.")
Needless to say, the con organizers (and a number of con attendees who went to the con specifically to meet the artist) were a bit pissed off over the whole affair.

Eh, I like his stuff in the Demon Bear saga but the Legion one was a bit too loose for me. I get that it was going for a more abstract look to represent his mind, but I felt the overall quality fell off.

He seemed like a nice guy, little brouhaha aside. I was able to talk to him early on the first day of the con and he was quite cheerful and appreciative of the fans.
Also, pic-related is from one of his overlooked recent works: It's the 2004 Marvel Knights Black Widow miniseries (also collected in TPB as "Black Widow: Homecoming") that had him inking over Croation artist Goran Parlov's breakdowns/layouts. A visually striking work that was undermined by Greg Land's horrendous "traced from a shampoo commercial/pr0n video" covers (I wouldn't be surprised if potential buyers passed on the miniseries/TPB specifically because of those covers).

One thing that makes me sad is that we don't get that many styles in modern comics. Usually it's either cartoonish stuff, or some generic clean-cut art. Marco Rudy was good, but his comics don't sell well, and I still like Bachalo, but otherwise, there aren't many artists that I look forward too. I wish Texeira returned to drawing comics

I don't think there're ENOUGH "clean" artists in mainstream comics, DESU. Most stuff is totally over-rendered with busy-busy layouts--I like Marcos Martin, Allred, Paolo Rivera, Steve Rude, people like that. Oh, the guy who drew 100 Bullets (forgotten his name!) and Corben's line-art are great....I don't really read contemporary capes, though, last thing I got from The Big two was the new Howard The Duck (which is great and the type of mainstream art I like).

Sounds like you might like the work of Alex Toth—he is, for all intents and purposes, the godfather of the contemporary, relatively minimalist and graphic-inspired trend in comics that stands in contrast to the similarly popular rendering-heavy, illustrative approach.
I like both "styles" in equal measure myself when applied by competent artists (the operative word being "competent"... when "stylists" fail to deliver, it's often because of "style" being used to cover up a deficiency in fundamental drawing/visualization/storytelling skills).

They worked Marvel method so it's like Sienkiewicz is sending over all this crazy art that is like nothing ever seen in a Marvel comic before, and Claremont is writing his thought balloons and captions all over it, and it shouldn't work but it does. It's messy, but it works.
And I don't think a more with-it writer would have given Sienkiewicz as much freedom as Claremont did.
(Ann Nocenti was the editor of the X-Books at the time and she probably also deserves a lot of credit for letting Sienkiewicz go nuts like that. It turned a weak X-Men spinoff into something really memorable.)
