I watched a few episodes of it and was kind of surprised at how close it was to the 80's cartoon. They even brought back Ross Bagdasarian, Jr. as Dave, Simon, and Alvin

Back in the 1930s and 1940s, Popeye, Donald Duck, and the early Bugs Bunny were the original douche bag protags. In the 1950s, early Dennis the Menace in comic acted almost exactly like the current Alvin—bad attitude and he gets away with it.
These douchey characters almost invariably soften with time (today, Dennis is a sweet little boy). Alvin is a rare example who seems to have gotten worse, but it hardly makes him uniquely bad.
Even if the current show sucks.

How is Timmy a douche? When the whole point of the show is "be careful what you wish for" then obviously the main character has to make stupid, inconsiderate choices for the story to move. But he always learns from them. Not like a half assed Family Guy "lesson'', but a legit well written look back on the fuck up. Timmy's made some of the biggest sacrifices just so other characters can be happy.

But that's wrong. Chuck Jones had set a rule thatBugs could never start a fight. He could only go and humiliate other character after they were dicks to him. Elmer Fudd literally tried to kill him for sports, for the starters. And even then, when Bugs abuse of Elmer went too far and audience started to feel bad for the guy, they replaced him with a character who was devoid of all his sympathetic traits - Yosemite Sam. And later did the same by having Bugs fight Marvin, who was pretty open about wanting to blow up the entire planet.
