I’m not ashamed that I used to be big into South Park, but with every year I developed away from it, and looking back now it feels like the show has been stuck in a stasis field or something.
For me, the turning point was the twoparter where Stan grows more and more cynical and feels like there’s gotta be more to things than the way they are now, and it was very obviously spun into a meta narrative. Stan’s parents look like they’ll break up, Stan is depressed, it was surprisingly down to earth by South Park’s standards. For all intents and purposes, it looked like the show was getting ready to make a leap and develop itself. After so many seasons of doing its thing, maybe the creators had grown weary? Maybe they wanted to challenge themselves? I was stoked, I really wanted to see what it would mean for the future of the show.
But guess what? None of that happened. None. It turned out to be a complete and utter fakeout. The twoparter ended with Stan accepting that things are always going to be this way and just rolling with it. At first, I wanted to think it was just some kind of clever, selfware jab - The show joking about its own tired formula. But no, it wasn’t that clever. It was literally just a fakeout, and everything continued as before. And to me, that just wasn’t enough anymore.
Today, to me, South Park is like an old friend from high school. They used to be fun to hang out with, but as the years went by, you just kinda developed and expanded your horizon and learned more about the world. And once in a while, you hear about the old friend secondhand and everything suggests they are still the exact same they were in high school - Same limited world views, same immature humour, same everything. And, most of all, it makes you wonder how the hell anyone can be satisfied with that.

Retard is popular because it describes an unsavory individual, an therefore its a good insult to use on somebody. Nobody wants to be a retard. If you change the name, it won't matter, because the word will take on the meaning of the person it describes, and if the person is disgusting or overall unpopular, the word will be too.

That fakeout was part of the joke.
Believe it or not, most of the time there is continuity here and there, but in that two-parter they're directly addressing status quo and how things never change. Thus the punchline at the end where Stan's parents get together, and everyone realizing that Cartman's "secret flavor" hamburgers comes from his ass, thus shutting the business down with Kyle and Cartman.
Their last two seasons make things interesting in that there's now an overarching story involved. It's subtle but its there. You'll want to watch again.

So far, this season has been on the fence for me. E01, E05, E07, and E08 felt like they were putting little effort into the writing, but E02, E03, E04, and E06 were fun and really well done.

I just caught up on this season and honestly I'm disappointed. I generally ignore south park now, but I came back after hearing the show would take on political correctness in a meaningful way. Having caught up now I can see that south park really has lost its bite. This is seen in the episode with him being the "poor kid" at school, the episode where he "helps" Jimmy with the Fish Sticks joke, and of course the episode Insecurity, but he's shown to be a lot more manipulative than he is fragile in most cases.
