I'M SORRY
>>
>>77565374
is there a joke?
I don't... I'm just bored and confused by this.
>>
>>77565374
Oooooh I get it, he's trying to make Becky the new main character. Fucker's trying to pull the same trick he did in Shortpacked.

Except that, you know, had a story that was canonically more than a fucking month old.
>>
>>77565374
And Bruce Wayne? Why are you dressed up as Batman?
>>
Surprised an elevator can hold that many people so full of themselves.
>>
>>77565425
It's a various cast story. Joyce is the main character, but other character like Walky, Sal, Dorothy or Amber still have a rather big role to play. Same with Becky.
>>77565456
I have been in more crowded ones.
>>
Wait, I thought at the beginning of the story she couldn't keep crashing at the dorm? What happened with that?
>>
>>77565432

That's Ethan, not Bruce Wayne.
>>
>>77565374

Willis made Becky even MORE insufferable.
>>
Yes Becky, we know, you're a dyke.

Now go be a dyke somewhere else.
>>
If Willis sees threads like this (because he's shown that he looks up his shitty comic on tumblr), a couple of things:

- I'd rather give money to leakanon rather than support your uncreative shitpile
- Stop forcing Becky she's the worst forced character ever

The same guy who just put out a "group shot while lesbian brags about how awesome she is" update and admitted that the entire two month arc with that character was mainly just an excuse to have her flip everybody off and say "FUCK YOU DAD!" considers edits like these to be "insulting and cliche"
>>
The new porn story is out......

Did I miss the edits or a link?
>>
>>77565456
It's mostly just hot air though.

JOKES!
WRITE JOKES!
>>
I could forgive what an annoying character Becky is and what a logistical nightmare this whole storyline has been if not her reactions to the last few hours of her life were anything at all like those an actual human being would have.
>>
>>77566761
There was a link. Then there wasn't a link.

Consensus is that the gay scene was pretty shitty and that there wasn't enough porn
>>
>>77565949
Still fucking retarded a big guy like that needed to bring a fucking gun to collect his daughter. One claps at the arm and drag her to the car; I doubt any of her limp wrist faggot friends could stop him.

Hell, they could probably still have him get arrested for it too. But no, "hurr dem homophones and der guns!"
>>
>>77566761
Check /aco/. It was linked in previous thread too.
>>
>>77566907
Yeah what kind of person goes "WOOO LET'S DO THAT AGAIN" after they've just been in a terrible wreck? That's something that only happens in kid movies.

>>77565374

I'm gay and this... Well you know I don't even know what to say really.

Is that ALL Becky wants to forge her identity as going forward? "That gay girl"?

I rather liked when Ethan said he felt like all he was now was gay. That it felt like it eclipsed who he was. That was very similar to how I felt at first. Afraid that being gay would just be all I was but it's such a minor part of who I am.

Becky is the exact opposite. All there is to Becky is that she's a loud outspoken lesbian... She just let it consume her. And one of the reasons I felt that way was because of gay characters like Becky. Characters that can only be described as gay.

I was kind of hoping this would be part of Becky's discovery phase. Like she was repressed for so long that she had to let loose but learned that being a lesbian didn't mean giving up who she was. That she didn't have to scream "I'M GAY" every few seconds. That she could just be normal. That nothing changes in the end... I think I expected too much from Willis though huh...
>>
>>77567179

I just can't believe she is STILL crackin' wise. Can we not get a few moments where she's like "wow this was fucking crazy, lots of people almost died my dad is going to prion for fucking ever and hates me damn"
>>
>>77567844
Honest to god write him and tell him that. Tell him that you find characters like Becky offensive and oppressive. I want to see the response.
>>
>>77567854
Like I get her dad is the bad guy, but that's a life-long relationship and I have a hard time buying her just flipping him off and being like "SUGGA DICK DAD" after all that. Like I get that she "tried" and was rejected or whatever but that kind of callousness is not an endearing character trait and that rejection didn't even seem to phase her.
>>
>>77567610
That whole kidnapping/rampage may have been dumb as hell, but it was at least funny to experience Willis having what might have been his "loss.jpg" moment in slow motion. Now that it's over Dumbing of Age goes back from being terrible in every way to flat out not having a reason to exist again.
>>
>>77567865

He already blocked me. I'd send him a screencap on twitter if he didn't because why not.

But really this entire arc. Is it somewhat true to life? Yes... But Ross being a more sympathetic, to me, would have been so refreshing. So comforting.

Characters like Becky were why I was afraid of being gay, characters like Ross, like Ethan's parents, were why I was afraid to come out to my parents...

They weren't exactly the biggest fans of gay people but you know what? They tried to accept me, and in the end they did. My family came to accept that I was gay even though they really weren't comfortable with the idea.

And that isn't how it happens for everyone but cliche stories about the parents hating their children for being gay are sick and tired and Ross is more of a cliche than the final edit will ever be. Seeing Ross try to accept his daughter; showing gay kids in college, his target demo, that there's a chance their parents will adjust to it would have been so much better than another shitty "Parents Suck" story.
>>
>>77567891
>>77567945
Willis is living vicariously through her. There was no hope for any subtlety; the whole thing was a two-month long screed about how much he wishes he could do that to his own dad.
>>
>>77567844

Same here, anon, the way Becky has been developed as apparently what Willis thinks of a positive lesbian character but with nothing else to define her than "the outspoken lesbian" just makes me feel embarrassed of myself. I kind of feel as though this is how straight people really do see us. I don't think I would quite mind so much if she actually was outspoken about other things and interests, but she doesn't seem to have any. Except for the dinosaur girl and that seemed at the last minute too. (sorry for bad english)
>>
>>77567969
Is there even any talk of what his parents did to him that was so awful? Does he ever elaborate on them? I mean to the point where he laughs at backgrounds characters being killed in movies because they were parents even if they did nothing wrong and to write every single one as abusive unredeemable people in all of his comics deserving of having the shit beaten out of them is alarming.
>>
>>77568098

From the way he explains things they don't sound like the best of people but... It's really what most kids go through. Parents are one way and you to go college and become your own man and learn your own way. They were radical fundies.

But with Willis? It broke him. He saw it all as his parents lying to him and betraying his trust. I honestly think he's undiagnosed with Autism. It would explain so much.

Wow.

Yeah, say what you want about Funky Winkerbean, but at least the author knew how to keep the tone of his comic consistent and to write interesting characters, unlike Willis.
>>
>>77567945
It even isn't just about the cliche. It's about how for most of the arc you could make an argument that Ross was simply a man who has been breaking down since the death of his wife and his daughter coming out sent him over the edge. That the entire thing is rooted in cognitive dissonance stemming from the one thing that allowed him to function after the loss of his wife, fundamentalist Christianity, now forces him to reject his daughter due to her homosexuality and his inability to reconcile that.

Hell, Willis' explanation that Ross doesn't really see Becky as a person but rather an extension of an idealized image of how his life is supposed to be would have made for an interesting take on what would essentially be an unredeemable antagonist, but Willis' didn't write that story. What we got was an overwrought, inconsistently toned farce of a storyline that seemed like a drunken mashup of pretentious LGBT theatre and 80s college comedy film.

>>77567990
Becky's relationship with Dina would be much better if it was approached from the standpoint of Becky diving head first into living as an out lesbian coupled with Dina's first attempts at having any sort of romantic relationship.

...wait, he drew that Funky Cancercancer comic, didn't he.
>>
>>77567901

>but it was at least funny to experience Willis having what might have been his "loss.jpg" moment in slow motion

But in the end, that's its biggest flaw. Loss was perfect in that it wasn't in slow motion. In one comic you saw everything Tim ever tried to do (and failed at) just get thrown into a blender known as "Dramatic comic" and get blended into shreds. And it all happened in 4 simple panels. It was poetic how strong a single page could be, and how it can perfectly sum up everything wrong with webcomics. This arc was okay, but it took too long to get through, making it boring. And if there's one thing worse than being outright bad, it's being boring.
>>
>>77568453
Nah, I had to skip the Lisa parts cause I'm only focusing on the Darin parts. It's important cause 1) the segment in >>77568391 was what inspired Willis to do the Shortpacked with Cancercancer Incest (he came back to the comic cold and there were no archives, so there was no way he knew the two weren't related) and 2) you'll get to see Darin actually meet Frankie, this time knowing that they're related unlike in >>77568262 where they were unaware of it.

I'd say he isn't lying about this.

He knows the bible like the back of his hand. he constantly posts old Christian children videos and songs, his fixation on Transformers comes from the fact that it was just about the only non-Christian thing he was allowed to like as a kid outside of probably Batman.

There is certainly evidence that suggests he's reliable here... The thing to ask is how outright evil were his parents? Were they a bit misguided probably?

Some of his more social issues with them, like how they treated gay people, are really just chalked up to "It was the 80s and no one knew better" and it's shitty but you need to view the world based on the frame of the time and at the time... It was the norm. Can you hold things against your parents when they're part of the norm?

He had this strange idea of pure and honest trust with his parents. It's where all of his issues most likely stem from... I don't have it saved but the dickgrasper incident kind of supports that frame of mind. That he just bought wholesale into what his parents where shoveling and finding out his entire world was in the wrong broke his brain.

I would be willing to bet his brother and sister are more normal. They might even disagree with their parents but I bet they're not resentful and better about it like David seems to be.

well just because he DESCRIBED them doesn't really mean it's true. Based on his writing style of HAH HAH FUCK YOU BITCHED I really can't take him at word.

Ive also known a few kids of super fundies in my time and they where mostly just really quite about it all. They didn't like talking about religion or whatever for various reasons and they sure as shit didn't go out of the way to fuck with them like this.

Willis is too loud about it. He sounds like a guy who knows ABOUT a problem but doesn't have any real experience dealing with it properly.

>>
>>77568662
I've seen that kind of attitude from people with those type of parents before. I'd say it's far more likely that he just never left his kneejerk reactionary shithead phase.
>>
>>77565949
Is this an edit? It's kind of touching.
>>
>>77568766

Willis is a shitlord but there is enough evidence to suggest he's not lying when it comes to his parents being a bit high strung.

Like I said: Willis's problem comes from the fact that he fully bought into the shit they shoveled. He just openly trusted his parents, never questioned. That's why he's so broken about it. He feels they betrayed his trust and it just royally screwed the guy... He certainly had super fundie right parents. There are things all the way back from Roomies and some of his old message board posts. He probably exaggerates to some degree but there's very little chance he's lying about this.

>>77568428

First I've seen about this. Got any screencaps?
>>
>>77568814
Say what you want about Batiuk, but he does know how to play a soap well. Dragging up a plotline 12 years old? Gotta give him credit for that alone.
>>
>>77568827

It's incredibly insulting. Look at all the other gay characters in the strip (and there's no shortage) they all have other characteristics beyond gay. kinda.

The one chick who's sleeping with the RA did a whole Alcholism arc and had the whole big girl on campus small fish in collage thing.

Now with Becky it's just GAY GAY GAY GAY GAY FUCK YOU DAD GAY!

She's in the right to be who she is but who she is has to actually be a person. She's not conflicted about losing her dad, she's not worried about her family or what being gay actually means. It's just she's gay thats enough and everyone else even her dad is just a nazi asshole villain who is standing int he way of her getting some vag
>>
>>77568865

Yeah. It was the final version of our edits for those two strips.

He called it cliche when we sent it to him and felt it removed all conflict and character.
>>
>>77568865
>kind of touching

Of fucking course it's an edit. The real strip ends with her going "IMMA BE A SCIENTIST AND SHIT" and flipping her dad off with both birds.
>>
>>77565374
>Gay as seen on TV
So her personality is still "have I reminded you I'm lesbian today".
>>
>>77568868
Unfortunately, no.
It was on his tumblr a while back, with the gist being "yea my parents were weird about what shows I watched, but my mom was obsessive about way more with my brother. A doctor told her he was allergic to some food, and she kept finding more and more things he was 'allergic' to until he was only able to eat like 6 things. When he moved out and started eating on his own, it turned out he had no reaction to any of those foods he hadn't been allowed to have." I wish I had saved it, because searching for specific posts on tumblr is garbage.
>>
>>77568868
>He feels they betrayed his trust and it just royally screwed the guy

But how? You're not actually saying anything. What part of the fundie ideals where such a betrayal when he got to school? Because I sincerely doubt that his parents where taking him to fag drags or lynchings.

Worst case scenario he went to church a lot and on occassion someone said some off color remark. He was still well fed, clothed, fuck he got to collage and it was probably on his parents dime
>>
>>77568893

Well how else would you know she's gay? I mean it's not like gay characters are supposed to be written the same as straight people or anything.

>>77568874

Danny went through some stuff, Ethan kind of really has only had stories centered around his sexuality but his has been contrasted to Becky's in that he's afraid of being absorbed by his homosexuality into becoming "Just that gay guy" where as all Becky wants to be is "LESBIAN" and now "SCIENCE"

I though the panel where she says "I love you, Dad" was a bit cliche. I think it could have been better removing the speech bubble and leaving it as a pregnant pause before saying bye. It would better reflect on Ross not saying anything by having neither of them really know how to address the other anymore.
>>
>>77568938
Maybe if he bought into the "Other religions are THE DEVIL" and then, y'know, met normal people in other religions.
>>
>>77568973

Rather he met a bunch of "ALL RELIGIONS ARE THE DEVIL" people. Because this shit? This isn't normal.
>>
>>77568938
He's talking about Willis' personal reaction to the difference between what he'd been raised to think and his learning of the world and forming his own opinions of it. Being well-fed, clothed, and going to college on his parent's dime doesn't factor into this.
>>
>>77568872
He had a timeskip so characters were aged up a decade. The publishing timeline was like this:

1986: Les finds out Lisa got pregnant after moving away, Lisa gives birth and the kid is adopted by the Fairgoods, who name him Darin. Over the years, Batiuk drops obvious hints to say that Darin is Lisa's son.
1993: Les and Lisa reunite at the reunion. I think they get married in 1996 but I can't remember.
2000: Frankie returns (at this point he's rich because of the dot-com boom), wanting to know where his son is because he thinks he could raise him better than whoever adopted the kid. Lisa refuses to help.
2002: Frankie returns again, this time desperate to find his son because he lost everything. He runs off when he thinks he might've harmed the baby Lisa's carrying.
2007: Darin tries to find his birth mom. Lisa, who's accepted her impending doom, allows for the records to be unsealed and they finally meet this time knowing their relation.
2009: Takes place more than 10 years after Lisa's death. Darin comes back to Westview.
2013: Fred Fairgood has a stroke. Funky tells Cindy about Les working on the screenplay for Lisa's Story, so she reports it on the news. Frankie sees the news report and finally knows how to find his son. And of course the reunion does not go well.
>>
>>77568987
Not all religions, just Christianity. Because that's one of the only things (along with anything straight, rich, or white) you are allowed to attack and look like a hero in the social justice culture Which is great because it allows Willis to stick it to his Christian Fundie Parents.
>>
>>77569019
You can do Judaism if you phrase it right.
>>
>>77568967

I kind of read it as a more mature middle finger.

She's essentially proving herself to be the bigger person by still loving her father despite him being shitty.

At least that's how I read it because of the emphasis on love.

>>77569001

Exactly. I believe his first wake up call his when he met his first gay person and they were nothing like his parents said.

It has shit to do with being well taken care of, it's how he was raised from an ideological stand point and it's really clear they were nuts. Crazy people exist. I still don't discount he exaggerates a bit but he has an internet profile that dates back like 20 years and it's always supported that they were unhinged.

I don't like Willis but I still believe him on the fact that his parents were hyper Christian fundie nutjobs.
>>
>>77569001
>He's talking about Willis' personal reaction to the difference between what he'd been raised to think and his learning of the world and forming his own opinions of it.

okay, and? Still want to hear details. You can't just say REAL LIFE IS DIFFERENT FROM WHAT I WAS RAISED TO BELIEVE! and expect that to mean anything. HOW?

Cuz really all it seems like is he's a typical collage freshman douchebag who only just started learning about life and wants to be seen as an expert with his non degree as he just parrots whatever his hip cool professor says
>>
>>77569053

Because he is. That's what you're not understanding.

His parents raised him one way, he went into college and started learning ANOTHER way for the first time in his life and his brain could not handle it.

It broke him.
>>
>>77569053
I'm not sure what argument you're trying to make. It's pretty obvious that Willis is your typical college freshman douchbag who only started learning about life and wants to be seen as an expert stretched out into his thirties.
>>
>>77569048
>It has shit to do with being well taken care of

It has EVERYTHING to do with it though. Let's say it's the gay thing. Yeah he realizes his parents where wrong about the gays and they're decent folk. But how does that undo 20 years of care and love that his parents shown him?

Because they had dated views they're no longer people in their eyes? He's not seeing the fundies as people who either don't know better or where just victims of another time and culture.

He acts like he was abused with all his parent hate nonsense. It's too extreme in the opposite direction. Yes his fundie parents may be flawed people but I refuse to believe there was no love between them and to villain them like this is absurd and cartoonish.
>>
>>77569083

You're acting like Willis is a well adjusted normal person.

He's not.

That trust in the ideals his parents taught him was literally everything to him. He is not a normal person stop trying to think of him like one.
>>
>>77569078

>>
>>77569048
>I don't like Willis

Yet here you are sticking up for his testimony.

So what are you getting out of this then? Why is him being right about his parents so important to you? You seem to be unwilling or unable to accept that he might be lying or batshit insane
>>
>>77569223
Why is him being wrong about his parents so important for you?
>>
>>77569223

He is batshit insane but this is why he's batshit insane. Because his parents were a bit out there.

It's like arguing that CWC isn't the way he is because of his own parents enabled every wrong choice he made.

Your argument is objectively wrong and that triggers me

>>77568941
I've always found that one strip right before Ethan comes out to Joyce to be so painfully meta. Complaining about being seen as nothing but gay when the author only writes about you when your gayness is involved

I mean, his 'it's okay to have what is clearly a crippling addiction to toys' thing in Shortpacked was shitty as fuck, but at least it was something besides him banging dudes or wanting to bang dudes
>>
>>77569929
But if we don't talk about horrible garbage, then how can we talk about DoA?
>>
>>77570500
>his 'it's okay to have what is clearly a crippling addiction to toys' thing in Shortpacked was shitty as fuck

Can we talk about that? What the fuck was that?

He depicted Ethan as having this crippling problem, but when the boyfriend tries to help him we're supposed to side with Ethan?

What? Why? He's being a selfish prick.
>>
>>77570541
It's because Ethan doesn't have a problem; he has a perfectly legitimate hobby and Drew's just being a dick about it because he likes being minimalist.

Or at least, that's how Willis sees it. And damn if anybody else thinks otherwise.

I might be able to buy it, except that Willis showed Ethan stopping in the middle of chasing down Amber's Dad (who was the previous owner of the Worst Parent award before Ross, so you know he's evil) so he could check the stores for action figures. Which was also a prime example of Willis shooting his drama in the crotch to keep the comedy going.
>>
>>77565949
How boring and safe.
I'm not saying that her flipping off her dad who keeps cursing her for having the gay is GREAT, but at least it's something.

Becky should be louder, angrier, and have access to a time machine.

>Robin is a Willis self-insert

Nah. Ethan, Amber and at times Leslie were 100% self-inserts in Shortpacked! as far as Willis is concerned. Ethan And Amber represented both his toy collecting side along with the parent stuff. Then after he killed Ambers dad, he used Leslie to tackle all the "PARENTS = LITERALLY SHITLORDS" stuff.

You know, that works. I'd move the panels of her looking back at him around, but the idea is solid: it hurts to cut him out of her life, but when she sees that not only can he not look her in the eye but that he did not soften an iota because of her telling him that, THEN she hardens enough to flip him off. He had his chance at reconciliation, and he didn't take it.

The original idea was clearly that they were both a bit out of hand but when his readers all began to side with Drew he just tanked the relationship.
>>
>>77570641
>>77575546
That was the point when I realized I had to stop reading unfortunately I kept going anyway.

WIllis couldn't have his readers acknowledging that while Drew needed to chill out, Ethan had a problem that needed to be dealt with. Because that would mean Willis had a problem that needed to be dealt with. Can't have that, nope!

Suddenly, Drew is this moustache-twirling evil boyfriend trying to ruin Ethan's hobby.

And then there was that bit later, where Ethan runs into Drew again, and Willis uses it as a fucking megaphone to defend himself yet again.

Funny enough, it takes place in a backdrop cameo of /co/'s other favorite shitshow, QC.

Which leads me to the question...who will break first? Jeph "Handstab" Jacques, or David "Sadwank" Willis?

I never really got QC hate, to be honest.

I mean, yes, the comic is boring soap opera stuff 90% of the time, but at least Jacques recognizes when he screws up most of the time. Willis, on the other hand, wouldn't recognize legitimate criticism if it was flung at him from a thousand parapets
>>
>>77576154

From what I've heard, dolphins are huge assholes. They seem to be the only animal that kill and rape for "fun" (other than humans).
>>
>>77576419
>liking the psychopathic rapists of the sea

Sharks are so much nicer to work with. To hell with dolphins.
>>
>>77576602
QC gets hate because it was a mediocre-to-decent slice of life comic that took a nosedive in art quality and started being very pandering. He spent about a month on making it clear "She has a penis and Marten is ok with it!".

That and multiple characters pretty much don't exist anymore like Dora, Winslow, Sven and Marigold. The rare times they do appear is for random jokes then they're gone again.
>>
>>77576602
I hate QC because I don't understand why people like it
it just seems like there are 1000 better things to read than QC, it's just so bland
>>
>>77565374
Funny how Becky looks copy pasted in. Poochy would proud.

Can someone make an edit without her?
>>
>>77565499
I'm gonna have to agree with >>77565425 here. Willis has been shoving Becky into the limelight for almost a year.
She's cannibalized Joyce's character development, she's taken over at least three subplots, including ones that should be totally unrelated to her, and everyone is always talking about her even if she isn't present.

Lets just face it. Becky is the new main character and that is the worst fucking thing ever.
>>
I think I missed a few strips. Can somebody post the strips between Amber with her broken glasses and OP's strip?

He's probably going to justify that by saying that Joyce and Becky were both in the first strip so that means they're both main characters.
>>
>>77576768
>>77576826

She looks about as forcibly inserted into that last panel as she has been in the story for the past few months.

That panel looks like it was designed to be a new DoA banner/cast image, with Becky as the MC.

It's awful, she is awful, and Willis is awful.

That's all that needs to be said in these threads, and yet we still keep making them.
>>
>>77576826
Probably because he thought everyone would hate Joyce due to being a brainwashed fundie, only for the audience to take her side most of the time and not get overly mad at some of the stuff she said because they understood she was sheltered.

He probably wanted people to cry for her murder when she said stuff about fixing Ethan, but the readers were just "Oh Joyce you silly goose".
>>
>>77576955
Clearly we are masochists.

Also it's fun to point and laugh at how incredibly broken Willis is.
>>
>>77576957

Quite honestly, after having nowhere to vent about how shitty this comic is for a long time, I love these threads.
The comic deserves it, Becky deserves it and Willis deserves it.

Makes me think of another redhead in a webcomic whose presence almost seems forced and unnecessary.

Maybe trusting redhead girls is simply a terrible mistake.

These kinds of polls are stupid, since they are gonna be heavily bias to the characters currently being featured. Mike and maybe Ruth are the only results that should be looked at since they have hardly appeared in the last few months. Mike has been in 6 strips over the last 7 months and Ruth has only been in 1 strip since July.

>Whenever Becky's not on screen all the other characters should be asking "Where' Becky?"
This part already happens.

Fuck, the only thing missing from this list is access to a time machine, and after that car chase I wouldn't be surprised.
>>
>>77577240
Why would anyone vote to see more of Becky? She's been the sole focus of almost a years worth of strips.
>>
>>77577448
People were scared she was gonna be written out because of how completely illogical her staying is, so they thought this would convince Willis to not do that.

Despite the fact the comic already has a buffer up till the end of February.
