Again, anticipating speculation, Roberts said that the cover for 50 is about the overall series. Which by the way, do we know if it ends after the finale/50-something issue? The Decepticons are trying to make a comeback. They're unhappy with the Camien refugees and Galvatron is basically an ancient warlord, so he's probably out for war. This issue seems to imply they're going to strike at the Autobots on earth and try to re-ignite the war or something.
The ongoing plot? Trying to set up issue 50: optimus colonizes earth.

I think he'll probably get over his dark and brooding persona quickly on the Lost Light since he's got people to talk to there. Perhaps Rewind and Megatron will remind him that there's more out there than self-narration like in Empire of Stone, especially with Roberts writing him again.
If they do come back after the season finale (they have to, looking at the solicitations for everything up to 50) I hope there isn't much of a 'welcome home' episode and more of a 'glad you're here but shit's happening and we need your help' sort of thing.
