My dad did it, it must have been really hard.
I have an outdoorsy job and once me and my boss were out way in the woods and we found a deer tangled up in some barb wire. We cut it loose but its neck was broke and it was obvious it was going to die a slow and painful death, if not from its injury then being eaten alive by wolves when night fell. My boss had his gun with him and I tried to talk him into shooting the fucking thing just to put it out of its misery. But he was too much of a pussy. I asked him to give me the gun so I could do it but he wouldn't let me.

We left at the end of the day and had to come back the next morning to finish our work. Deer was ripped to pieces, bones and bits of fur everywhere. I never forgave him.

You could've just taken into a vet? There's usually an emergency clinic for animals that's open around the clock in most areas. When my cat accidentally got poisoned I had to run it to one in a panic at like 11 o'clock at night as the poor thing was going into seizures.

After my first pet (the sweetest, most chilled out cat you could imagine) we adopted a kitten and I was thrilled at having another fuzzy thing around the house to be my best friend and grow up together.

Then about three months after we brought it home, it went missing outside. Didn't come back home for three days. I was worried sick. My uncle eventually was the one who found it on the side of the road, he had been hit by a car.

My dad didn't tell me until I was much older, but the kitten was still alive when they found it, and they had to put it out of its pain right there because the injuries from the car hit were too severe to even move it. For about ten years I thought that they had simply found it dead.

It wasn't even a year old yet.

I was there when my first dog was put down. The thing that made me cry the most was the way that he yelped when they stuck the syringe in, and the part when he was slowly closing his eyes, and he just stuck out his tongue, as if to lick the air, but he was never able to put it back into his mouth.
It's one of the saddest fucking things.

>tfw my nana's cat passed away a few months ago
I would always tease it and annoy the shit out of it. Pet it when it didn't want to be pet, poke it, sometimes wrap it up in a blanket and swing it around a little. One time I even poked its butthole to see what it felt like.

She got sick and it was clear she was dying, girl was 13 years old and that's how they go. Parents had her wrapped up in a blanket and she would just keep shitting and pissing herself, it was gross and really sad. I tried to be nice to her in those times but I'm sure she was still just annoyed at me.

I feel bad that I wasn't more sad when she died. She had been part of my life for as long as I could remember and she was gone, but I wasn't as torn up as I was expecting. It is a just a cat but still.

I'm sorry I was such a dick Shadow, I hope you got all the food you could want in kitty heaven and can eat it all without puking.
>>
>>77537529
Honestly anon, be glad he was put down. A few months ago my cat got sick. We tried fluid treatment in the desperate hope that she might get better but instead I had to watch her deteriorate over the course of a few days. The last night she got bad really fast and all I could think about was how much I wished I had just had her put down the day before. The worst of all was the fear that I might not be at her side when she finally went. I ended up staying up all night with her, waiting for the local clinic to open so I could take her in, but she passed about twenty minutes before they opened.

My brother had a dog that he raised from puppy to 10 years old when he had to put it down cause cancer. Two days later, his son was born. So he was in one of the strangest states of becoming really happy to becoming really depressed for a full month

my dad once, after taking care of my cat for about 2.5 years while i was living somewhere that couldnt have him, then college, said, when i finally came to get him back, 'i was just about to sell him, to recoup the costs of getting him his shots and stuff'
and i was baffled. as was his wife, and everyone who hears this story. 'i got him his shots for you, but it cost a lot so i was gonna sell him, because he's pretty'

Thing is, with my dog, he was having seizures and it was getting pretty bad, but my mother paid for surgery to make him last a bit longer, but the seizures came back so we had to do the surgery.

Though, just a year ago, I got a call from my dad really early one morning to go to my grandparents house, as their lab was about to be put down and they thought I should have been there since I took care of that dog a lot. That was really fucking tragic because she was lying on her dog bed and there was vomit and shit all over, and she was just whimpering the whole time. It was something about her stomach just twisting up. My Dad, my uncle and I all grabbed the blanket she was on and carried her to the car.

God, losing animals is the fucking worse. I love them, but it's so, so fucking depressing when they die.
>>
>>77536688

Put her down last month. I wanted to put her down awhile ago but my family was against it and would rather have her sit in the corner and rot. Then when they decided to take her to the vet to check on her couch and got the results back (surprise she's fucking old) they wanted to put her down within the hour. I had to fucking fight them off with a stick in order to get a couple of days so I could give her a proper good bye to my best friend.

At lest she took what's left of the repsect I had of my family with her cause I'm going to be moving out right after Christmas.

you wanna know the worst, my cat went through the dehydration organ failure thing twice and bounced back from it perfectly
so when it happened the third time i was too slow to react, too illprepared, and after a few weeks of that it was clear he wasn't coming back from it.. and i'd just been letting him sit at my feet for days because i was focusing really hard on my telecommute job to make money..
too late i thought maybe catnip would improve his appetite. it didn't arrive til after i'd had him put down
>>
>>77537686
Selling your son's cat is kinda fucked up.
>>
>>77537729
Yeah, but like I said I think the biggest blessing with putting an animal down is that you get to make sure you're there for them.

I don't want to say I was lucky with my cat, but the fact that she wouldn't eat or drink at least made it a little easier in the sense that I didn't have to deal with vomit or waste. But yeah, it's fucking hard. She'd lay still and just meow, only quieting down for a little bit when I petted her and laid against her. The hardest thing about caring for a dying animal is that you can just never be sure what you can do to make them more comfortable.

>>77537746
Yeah, cats are so tricky because they don't really show signs of illness until it gets serious. They're pretty sturdy animals.
>>
>>77537904
as i understand it, the problem is that all of their emergency systems are shite. if they're starving and start burning body fat, their livers can't handle that much fat so they shut down. if they get slightly dehydrated (which is tough for a cat unless it has failing organs) their kidneys can't handle that. and their pancreas just likes to fail for no reason.
still he made it to roughly his 16th birthday so that's good. I got to spend like 3 solid years in constant contact with him thanks to the telecommute, so that was nice. i just feel like those last couple weeks were severely wasted. i was so sure he was gonna get better, i got so mad at him for making such a mess.. i barely bothered petting him since it would involve stopping what i was doing to get down on the heating pad where he was basically glued.. and then when i took him to get put down... fuck, they don't tell you to spend time with them BEFORE they get the shot, they tell you afterwards.. afterwards it was disturbing.. he was limp. i shouldve given him more affection beforehand but i didnt wanna mess anything up. goddamn anxiety

He was 18 but fuck if it didn't hurt all the same. He was a dachshund and had arthritis in his legs bad so he couldn't really walk. Just kinda hopped everywhere and it was obvious it hurt him. Yeah, in mine's case it was that her kidney lining had broken down with age. Apparently as long as they have some lining they'll be perfectly healthy, but as soon as it breaks down too much they deteriorate fast.

But yeah, it's hard wishing you could spend more time with them once it's too late. I remember sitting there just wishing she'd roll over for a belly rub one more time, and then that changed to just wishing I could get her to purr one more time.

My dog was put down a few years ago, he was around 12 - 13, so he lived a good long life, but it was still the most sad I'd ever been. I mean, I hadn't had any close relatives die, no friends die, nothing before that.

I remember he had just stopped eating, getting weaker and weaker, to the point where he couldn't even walk upstairs. I was staying over at a friend's house when my mom texted me and said "You better get here soon or we're taking him in without you" and I swear I never would've forgiven my parents if they left without me, I got there right as they were putting him in the car. I still remember him licking my hand while we were waiting. Hell, when we got back, it was the only time I had EVER seen my dad cry.

Still, better than letting him suffer, and he did live a good life. He was the family dog, but I kinda considered him MY dog. I was the one who fed him and took care of him, and he would always sleep in my room. I wish I had taken him for more walks.

Still, he was awesome. His bark sounded like a seal.

Oh jeez, years ago the most loving cat I ever had, the only one who would climb to my bed and sleep next to me, went missing for three days, and on the third, at about 11 pm, I heard him crying in the most horrible way while pounding on the plastic screen of the house's main door, when I opened it to let him inside, I saw something I will never forget:

>Open wound in the front paw filled with maggots
>Open wound in the opposite back pawn filled with maggots and two bones visible
>Various fingers missing
>Large gash on his head, his right eye was swollen
>Tail almost detached from his body, the rupture also filled with maggots.

I immediately grabbed him, got on my car and drove for about half an hour until I found a vet open, the dude immediately told me to put him down, but I couldn't, just couldn't, I begged him to clean him wounds, to treat him, told him money was no issue (I ended up spending money I have saved for over a year), and stayed with him while he treated my cat, my Oscar. It was about two hours of pulling maggots out, cleaning wounds, closing the ones that could, and in the end, removing his tail.

I arrived home at 2 am with my poor Oscar with more drugs in him than blood, and an aggressive (and expensive) treatment to try to save his damaged legs from infection, he died
at about 5pm that same day, after waking up and walking in such a horrendous way I was too paralyzed to try to stop him, he no longer looked like the cat I loved, but like a being that felt life was pain, and that's begging to die.

I have regretted not putting him down ever since, and his memory still wears heavy on my soul, I'm so sorry Oscar...

My cat, was with me for 15 years. He got very sick. Diabetes. His teeth were falling out, he couldn't move his hind legs. I knew something was up. For 15 fucking years, he never slept in my bed, the only time he did was when he was not even a year old and snuggled me.

Then he starts sitting there, sleeping, sleeping... And then he started yowling in pain. I miss him so much.

I make it a point to never close my eyes while watching TV shows or a movie no matter how bad it gets and this is the only time I've ever done it even after seeing shit like torture porn and body horror movies or just gross movies like the Guinea Pig series. I feel your pain. The spring right before I went to college I found what I thought was a 6 month old kitten in my backyard. The poor thing was scared to death of people at first but after a few months it warmed up to me and my family, though our two other outdoor cats didn't really like him (we lived out in the country and there were a lot of strays) but whatever he was our new cat. The only thing that was weird is he never seemed to get any bigger and he always had a cold.

Well fast forward to a few months and I'm at college. I get a text from my Dad saying he's taking the cats to the vet to get checked out. I'm don't really think about it because I'm going home for the first time since classes start later in the weekend. Later that day I get a text that our "kitten" is actually over two years old and it's growth was stunted by what the vet basically described as "feline AIDS". It was a miracle our other two cats didn't get infected. My Dad had already made arrangements for the "kitten" to be put down the next day, one day before I got home. I fucking wish I had been there but it was a four hour drive and no one would take me even if I paid for the gas. I try to take some comfort in the fact that we at least gave the poor little guy a safe place with plenty of food to spend his last few months. At least he didn't die alone.

Our family dog was super sick when I was maybe 9 or 10. I had to be the one to say we should put him down, even though we were all thinking it. It's not as bad as what some of these anons went through, but I still feel terrible that I was the one to "give the order." My parents are pretty immature sometimes.

I found my cat dead when I was a teenager.
It was in the basement covered by blanket. I was going down there to get something and I stepped on its leg. I knew what it was immediately.

It had died when I was at school. My mother was home when it happened. She said it climbed up the stairs, screamed, shat itself, then fell over dead.
My mother had to pick up my sister so she left the body out of the way.

We buried it in our Pet Semetary. Lots of good pets were there. One of my dogs was buried there not long after I moved out.
The other one is still alive in living with my mother. He's 14 now. Old for a dog of his breed. He's gotten old. So old. I'm not looking forward to when he dies. It'll be soon.

Pic related. It's the old dog when he was younger, tolerating my mother's festive spirit.
Good dog.

I put my 14 year old dog down last month right after we found out he had terminal cancer, my dad decided it would be best to not have him suffer any longer.
Fuck man it happened in the span of an hour, bringing him to the vet when he peed out some blood. I thought I'd have him around until at least next year.

I still wish I got a couple extra days with him but he got to go out peacefully, fell asleep before he even got the shot. I couldn't help crying like mad though.

Last year, just around thanksgiving I found my chihuahua under my mom's bed. She crawled under there in the night to die. She was already stiff and cold by the time I found her. We had a little wooden doghouse we kept in the living room that she liked to nap in, so I took her, wrapped her in a blanket and put her inside it. I went out back and buried her in it. Put a little wooden cross there I made with some branches and old wire.

I had her since I was five years old. A man shouldn't have to bury his dog.

i suspect she's waiting for a blaze of glory to go out in.

A man is the only one who should bury his dog.

There is no disgrace in death. They are not dirtied by it, nor you by proximity.

My boyhood dog has had a benign tumor for a few years in his head. It was in an area that would be very pricey and too risky to actually do without most likely killing him anyways. He's not in any physical pain yet but he's aggressive unless you treat him a very certain way exactly the same and although is still friendly at first to new people and greets them like he used to be if they get near him he'll get angry and try to bite them. He's still a happy dog as long as people give him space and I give him love but that mixed with his really old age is probably going to have him dead by next fall. Like most old dogs he's starting to go blind and he's getting slightly weaker as the last year has gone on. I'm not gonna make him suffer when it's time but I I've had him since I was like ten. I can't deal with this shit. He's the only real life friend I got.

Time for some ye olde feels.

When Odysseus returns from his 20 year voyage, he disguises himself as a beggar in order to see how things have changed.
It's an easy disguise, considering the ordeals he has been through. No one recognizes him, not even his old friends.
While approaching his old home, he sees an old dog lying in the stables. When Odysseus passes by, the dog perks up immediately and tries to stand. The dog is so old that it fails to rise entirely, but it still wags its tail at its old master.
Odysseus, slayer of Cyclopes, deceiver of Troy, man who has been to Hades and back, sheds a tear when he realizes that the dog was one he said goodbye to years before. It had been waiting for him to return for 20 years.
And now that he had, it was the only thing on his island home to recognize that he had returned.
Odysseus is unable to show any emotion due to the requirements of his disguise, but for the dog to see its master again is enough. The dog lies its head back down and dies happily, knowing its master is home at last.

I say spread them. I considered keeping my cats ashes, but I decided against it. It seems sweet at the moment, but eventually they're just going to be some nicknack on a shelf and I think it's much better just to keep them close with good memories rather than reducing them to that.

>catch up and grab him and bring him into the house
>he hides underneath furniture and won't stop bawling
>call parents and tell them
>we take him to the vet
>hear him howling for a long time
>he eventually goes quiet
>vet comes out and tells us that he's in unbearable pain
>his kidneys are failing and it's likely he ingested some antifreeze
>only way to save his life is with surgery, but he might not live through it and if he does, there's no guarantee he'll be much better
>decide to put him down
>vet lets me and my mom come and see him
>he's laying on a table, quietly mewing
>I pet him and praise him like I always did
>kiss him and cry like a fountain
>they give him the injection
>I tell him how much I love him and that he was a good cat
>his eyes are following me as I talk
>he squints and passes
>vet lets me hold him for a minute

When I was fourteen I was playing with my dog in the front lawn. We were playing by the ditch and he was halfway into the ditch and halfway on the road when somebody swerved their truck and ran him over in front of me on purpose. Why the fuck are people such assholes, fucking killing a kids dog in front of them on purpose.

When I was about 4-5 I got a dog with my own birthday money. I chose her and all.
Cut to my final year of high school. It was a shitty year all around, and I was becoming depressed. Then my dog began having violent seizures. I would stay up nights in case I had to hold her to stop her hurting herself. Mom took her to the vet one night to stay and hopefully get treated. Next day I got home from school and Mom has tears in her eyes. I don't need to hear it. Go to my room and cry.

I was in the house I looked outside and saw him from far away doing something. Once I realized he was hanging the dog, I ran outside and started holding and raised the dog up higher so that he wouldn't choke but my dad started pulling harder and yelled at me to let him go. Then he said if I didn't he'd go get the gun to shoot it. So i kind of shoulder tackled him hard enough to pull the rope away and drove off with my dog

The dog has always been hyper active. He loves to loa and acts like a puppy even though he's big. I don't think I've ever seen him ever get aggressive. One of our sheep had babies and they were a few days old. One of them got into his area where we keep him and he was to rough with it. We found it dead but it had no bite marks or even blood. That was what got my dad pissed. Also the other one was unrelated to my dad. I felt like shit because I could've prevented it. I had just woken up but it was a weekend so I decided to stay in bed a little longer. I heard my dog barking a lot but he always does that since it was a chihuahua. We always kept him in our back yard but it sounded like he was I. The front yard. I didn't think much if it. Later I got up and went out to get the mail. Then I saw him laying on the road with blood on his mouth. I guess he got run over. I felt so mad because I could've prevented it if I wasn't so lazy that day and i had that dog ever since I was four and I was 14 at the time

When I moved from one state to another, I had a hard time making friends, so my mom and dad bought me a dog. His name was Dylan. He stayed by my side for about twelve years before he went to live with my grandparents. I loved that dog more than anything in the world. Several months ago, we found out he had glaucoma, real bad glaucoma that was eventually going to just pop his eyes out of their sockets and cause him to bleed to death. When I heard the news I didn't know what to think. My first and best friend was dying. Part of me wanted to keep him alive, to keep him with me, but that part was wrong and foolish to keep my best friend in pain. We decided to put him down. I remember the last time I saw him. When I was young, if I would cry he would run and lick me all over and lay with me until I stopped. I called him to me that day so we could spend some time together. That's when I saw it, his eyes bulging unnaturally. I knew he couldn't see me anymore, and I knew he could hardly hear me anymore. I started crying so hard, harder than I have in years, and he limped over and laid at my feet. I told my mother that I needed to be there when they put him down. I was at work when I found out they did it without me. I'll never forget you Dylan. I'm sorry I wasn't there with you at the end.

Not gonna lie the family was probably the reason our first dog got heartworms and had to be put down. We loved the shit out of him, but we never took him to the vet or gave him medicine to prevent things. But he was fucking happy. I remember walking home from school and he would run up to the gate and it was the best feeling.
But at 12 he got the worms and my dad just took him and i never saw him again. I think my dad shot him, i could be wrong though.

Last year I lost my 6 and a half years old white shepherd. He was huge, violent against other male dogs, but really sweet when he was with us. Very intelligent, we let the dog walk everywhere in our house. I moved to another town due to medical school, so my parents were taking care of him. I came back every weekend to see him, but my dad loved him the most, his friend after 12h of work everyday.

One day my dad was fixing something outside our house and a male stray dog appeared. My dog lost his mind and crossed the street without thinking, two cars came and hit him. They didn't stop to help. Dad said he took the dog on his arms and he was breathless, his neck was smooth. Probably an irreversible cervical trauma, nothing could have done.

I know I couldn't do much, but I do feel bad for not saying goodbye, I was in a hurry before the last time I say my dog. Now I own two female dogs, one german shepherd and one white shepherd. I somehow feel like he lives within them, especially the youngest one. I always come back to see them every weekend and I always say goodbye to them.

Having your dog die suddenly like that is awful. My dog died last year when my family was visiting my grandparents. My dad used to breed dogs, and i would help him in the kennel when i was about 8 years old. (Simple shit, like feeding and making sure doors were closed)

Well. One day i forget to shut a gate behind me. and dogs being dogs. One got out, and got into a cage with his mother. His mother was in heat at the time and they fucked. and she neded up having puppies.

When the puppies were born. My dad was angry as fuck. So he took all the puppies, put them in a sack and handed me a hammer. He said "You have to kill them, so you'll know not to to this again."

Fuck man i cried the whole time. I can still hear the crunching. 15 years later

She was 10 years old and the vet couldn't get it to stay in the socket. We could've had surgery done on her but it was outrageously expensive and the success rate wasn't even that high.

>>77545334
From having worked at a vet's, it might've been that the dog was aged to the point that it had a high chance of dying during the amputation surgery. Also that older animals have a really hard time adjusting to amputations.

I had a dog that was in my family before I was. He was a Maltese mutt. He didn't know any tricks or anything but was healthy and never got into trouble other than acting like he was gonna fuck up other dogs, which was always funny when huge fucking pitbulls would be scared of him.
When I was 11 or 12 and he was 16 he started having seizures and pissing and shitting in the house.
So one day, we bought him dairy queen and took him to be put down. I held him as he died and sobbed like a baby. Our other dog freaked out for the rest of the day crying and panicing and was depressed for like a week.

I was pretty much the only one who gave it very much love. I would've adopted it, but my dog hates anything living outside of the family and I'm allergic.
She never even really got named so everyone called her girl kitty.
Apparently she was not eating and stuff and one day just wandered off.
My grandma found her dead in a ditch pipe. She was gonna go back the next day to get her body but when she did, it was gone.
My grandma fed her and everything but she never got the affection she deserved.

>Cats are the best pets
All pets are the best pets as long as they fit the owner's lifestyle and the owner knows how to properly take care of them

Would They really have any birth defects from only one generation of inbreeding?
Why couldn't he just give them away or something?
>>
>>77548058

It was the principle of the thing. He lost a lot of money from it, and giving the puppies away would devalue the stock.

It was in case we ran into a bear, he only had one can of bear spray and he gave that to me.

The black dog in this picture is Elvis, and we actually put him down a year ago today. When we got him he was just a silly little Flat Coat puppy who ran sideways and had a tail longer than he was. He loved fetch and swimming, and laying on your feet. About 4 years go he had a growth in his right jaw that was really affecting his ability to eat, turned out to be a tumor, and he ended up losing maybe about a quarter of his lower jaw. We started affectionately calling him Mister Snaggletooth cause the way his lower sometime sat caused on of this lower canines to poke out. And even though he started to slow down and begin to limp, he stilled loved fetch and cuddling.

About a week and a half before we had to put him down I took him on his last walk. I'm really glad I did.

A couple days later he couldn't move that morning, didn't eat, so my sister, her boyfriend and I picked him up and drove him to the local animal hospital. I don't remember the details, but he had a build up of fluid that caused it... but the X-Ray revealed that his lungs were riddled with small tumors. It wasn't a matter of if, at that point, but when. We brought him home, knowing that it was going to happen. He was limping pretty bad, so we let him sleep in my sister's and her boyfriend's room, in the most comfy bed. We had a few last days with him, but the night before this day last year his legs stopped working and he couldn't get up at all. But he could still wag his tail. We called the vet, who thankfully did home visits for putting animals to sleep. We were all around him, trying not to cry, giving him love and pets, scratching his chest just the way he liked it. We were listening to Bob Marely, and I still can't hear those songs without crying. The vet came, and first they put him to sleep, then that was it. I'm so glad they could come to our house. It was better for him, being home and surrounded by us. I'm really glad I got to say goodbye.

Was it really? I wonder what kind of panic comes over an animal's mind as it's body fails to respond, as it's concsiousness slips away unwillingly. I wonder if they know they're dying

What about the white one tho? Is he okay?

Pls anon my feels depend on it

That's why they are put to sleep before they are "put to sleep". Besides, I definitely think he was more comfortable at home in a bed he slept in than in a cold and sterile operation room.

Her name is Daisy, and she's doing good. She did slow down quite a bit when we lost Elvis, you can tell it took a lot out of her. She's still chugging along though, just not as fast. I was worried we'd lose her without her "Soul buddy" around, but she's still loving and playful.

I've had 3 cats, 2 of which we've had to put down. My first one got sick and blotted to the point where he could no longer breath. The vet couldn't figure out what was wrong, so we put him down.

2nd time was actually a month ago. Same thing happened to her, she had labored breathing, and they found what was believed to be a tumor around her heart that was pushing down on her lungs.

I was with both of them when we put them down. It's extremely difficult to watch, and it hurts watching them go, but at least their last thoughts are of you.

I miss them every day.
