It's not really that big a mandate. It just goes against his character, that's all. It's the same as having a Mario comic where they have a mandate against showing Mario naked, or having sex with dead bodies, or killing people with a kitchen knife. It doesn't fit the spirit of the games.

Not all the time, just a healthy dose sometimes. I understand why Sega of Japan told Archie to cool it with the excessive crying, but have Sonic show a little emotion. For god's sake he looks so cold on the panels to the right.
Here's another example of Sonic being an emotionless brick. But maybe the blame shouldn't just be placed on Sega considering the writers constantly place Sonic in scenes of agony(?) in the first place.

Look, you can have him show emotion, but that doesn't need to be shown through crying and tears everywhere. Have them be manly tears, or have Sonic be a guy who can control his emotions, and when you see even one drop from his eyes, you can tell he's sad.
