The biggest problem with my project is that in order to be a truly effective diagnostic, you need to drop literally every approximation and simplification in plasma and atomic physics in order to actually recover useful information.
Can't drop collisional effects. Can't drop electron-electron coupling. Can't drop ion drag. Can't drop electron-ion interactions. Can't use ideal parameters. Can't use fluid approximations. Can't use the simplified Boltzmann model. Etc etc etc. I've been working at this for four years and there are days where it feels like I've barely made any progress.
If it weren't for the intense emotional high I get off of finally solving a problem I've been struggling with I can't imagine having the will to do this as a living.

At the very least, she's going to end up in a shitload of student debt. Lab fees are nothing to sneeze at, and in order to get the lab experience or connections needed to move on to graduate school or an industry job, she's going to need to pull a summer internship or undergrad assistantship, and that's extra time (and fees forked over to the university) on top of everything.
Ironically, if she REALLY wants to be a scientist what I would highly recommend is living at home for a couple years and getting her general ed. electives out of the way at a smaller community college before transferring to a 4-year institution to do the lab work and higher level science courses.

The point is more that modern science extends out of traditions developed and fostered by Christian religious environments and thought. Religion, and Christianity, are not antithetical to a scientific understanding of the world and no more hindered it than the Greeks or Romans did.
As mentioned before, the Renaissance creation of "Dark Ages" was in large part a smear job of the previous era and began the perpetuation of various myths about Christianities anti-scientific policies. The controversy with Galilieo is blown out of proportion and misconstrued, the burning of the Alexandrian library is blamed on Christians, and pagan cult leaders are fostered as somehow bastions of science. A narrative is created that places the waning influence of the Catholic church at the forefront of all ills in scientific development.
