In "Safe Space" he is the fulcrum of the story, and that's when he breaks his neck (as visible in the following episodes), while he runs around naked rambling that "The World is Darkness", about The Man who shadows him everywhere (Reality, probably, but might otherwise be an omen of things to come).

I personally like it, there's kind of a charm to it. It's when Matt and Trey were more or less experimenting to see what worked and what didn't. The kids acted more like kids (though don't get me wrong, I don't have a hate-boner for the episodes where they don't act like kids, hell I've enjoyed a fair amount of those) and the characters weren't fully established yet. It's a bit like The Simpsons, I guess. Not everyone seemed to enjoy Season 1, though I've re-watched it very recently and while I'll agree it's kind of a weak season (though obviously a hell of a lot better than the shit they make now), It definitely had its moments.
