Hindsight, twists like this in the new DC continuity are as stupid as the Khan and Blofeld ones from the new Star Trek and Bond movies since their impact is entirely reliant on the audience's familiarity with the revealed character in question.

The New 52 is almost entirely reliant on the audience's familiarity with the characters and past continuity.
Take the start of various books that didn't explain shit about the characters and never will thanks to 5 year gap that will hardly ever be explored. All because the dumb editors thought that the audience wasn't interested in origin stories. One good example is Justice League Dark. Only Vertigo readers would give a crap about that book. Sure, some people will know about Constantine from the movie and now recent series and some will know Zatanna from the cartoons, but the rest? Fuck, no, and the book never cared about reintroducing or developing anyone other Constantine and Zee.
That's the main problem about the reboot. It was lazily done and most of the writers aren't interested in developing the characters from the ground up. They bank on the readers familiarity despite this being a reboot where things should and are mostly different.

The twist is Midnighter's seemingly perfect boyfriend is obviously a serious supervillain.
Knowing who Prometheus is, is just a bonus that allows you to realize he's almost the perfect foil to M, and give you plenty of head-slapping moments when you re-read the arc.

The twist was that the boyfriend wasn't really who he appeared and its clearly someone doesnt like Midnighter.
Whether or not the reader knows Prometheus they still understand the twist.
Knowing who Prometheus is means tou'll understand how he did but not why he did it and since this is his first appearance since New52 started.

This. The fact that he was actually Prometheus is gravy. Additionally this is also a new Prometheus in a new world. Established readers who know of the character have as much information as new readers, since the specifics of the character could have changed. Both groups have ample reason to check out the next issues to see what he's about.
