SCHISM SYNDROME
>>
Oh thank you Aaron. There's actually a point to this, it's not just a writer getting bored with a character and turning them unlikable so they can enjoy a new toy.
>>
>>77345803

You didn't suspect Schism syndrome at any point? Really?

What did she say cured her syndrome in the first place, maybe she can do that again.
>>

>>77345873
I did.
But I used to read Willis and a host of other writers who did semi-decent stuff that spiraled into shit, and Marx already made me worried for the overall story's ability to stay coherent.
>>
>>77345644
A) She's preggers.
B) Radiation.
C) She's a ditto.
>>
>>77345912
Marx makes sense now, it's just jarring as fuck when he appears.

JimGod / "I" is on the same level as Marx, but Aaron handled that a lot better. If next he appears Marx isn't quite as dues ex machina as he was in the Rocket saga it will be a lot better.

Also wow like I know you've been burned but treating everyone like they're Willis is like treating every scratch as a lethal wound
>>
>>77345644
>"There's something wrong with me."

And then she explodes into bats.

But fuck, shit will get twice as intense by Wednesday, even more so by the end of thd week.
>>

oh man, if it turned out holly was a ditto illusion I wouldnt even be mad. because I'd be laughing too hard at how absolutely absurd it was.
>>
>>77345948
Agreed, "I" was pretty great. I even like Marx for the most part, though his Flask stuff was a bit off-putting.
I used to read Dominic Deegan, anon. I'm not proud of it, so I left it out. There are others, worse still, but I've long forgotten them.

Curve ball.
Why can Wally control dittos so well?

Answer.

He was the dittos.
Kirbee and Wally and everything are dittos.
Holly is the only one that is not dittos.
>>
>>77345863
You do realize that Jim's schism syndrome was special right? Most of the characters we've seen with it, including Wally and Gustine, were not insane

No, but I'll give you a hint: It involves animal-humans, lots of people going crazy, a mysterious god-being who speaks to characters in riddles, and it all ends with a big explosion.

She's like two feet tall. At that point it's more like a cock with a mouse attached to the back.
>>
I don't get why people keep saying Holly's going to schism. Schism is about being unable to reconcile your human mind with your mutant body. Jim was newly mutated and unaccepting of his new body when the emotional distress of Sarah leaving him set him off (and she basically did so because she couldn't accept his new body either). Holly's been a mouse for a long time, and there's evidence that she's accepted it well.

We're going to get a flashback, and it's going to help explain what Holly's deal with Clive is. It's possible it'll have something to do with her mutation, but it doesn't really make sense for her to schism right now.
>>
>>77351213
You realize that we started out with a character who was on the verge of Schism the entire time, right? It's not something that goes away, they're always at risk after mutation, but the risk is far less.

That aside, Holly has been clearly exhibiting that she thinks of herself as 'human' along with Clive, and that the 'rest' of the group are freaks for several pages now.

She's tottering on the brink of something, and signs mostly point to Schism.
>>
>>77345644
>there's something wrong with me
WELL NO FUCKING SHIT SHERLOCK
>>
>>77351324
Gustine couldn't believe Al was satisfied with her form, despite his reassurances. She had been insecure about her body all the way until the end of her quest. I'm not saying Holly didn't have to go through that as well, but Holly was the one who helped Wally let go of his old human form. That suggests that Holly has been okay with being a mouse for a while (even if it doesn't prove it). Holly has other issues, but we don't know if they have to do with her mutation.

For the second thing... I don't think that's it. From her perspective, she's the only one treating Clive like a person; everyone else thinks he's disposable. Wouldn't that make them inhumane in her eyes? And I think Holly's particular problem with Kirbee has to do with the whole cannibalism thing.
>>

She's saying they're not human (inhumane) because they're not treating Clive like a human. Holly's not getting her priorities straight, but I see these as attacks on Kirbee and Wally's characters, not on their mutated forms.
>>
>>77351833
We'll see what Aaron has actually in store for her, but it won't be pretty.

"I" is trying to take over Holly just like it did with Jim. Having a mental breakdown is like telling him he's welcome to mindrape you.
>>
>>77348413
Jim is a special example I think.
We've seen multiple characters with SS, including Wally and Gustine.
They didn't seem like they were being possessed by an eldritch monster
>>
>>77351880
Sure. It just seems like everyone's assuming emotional distress = schism when there's other prerequisites.

Disaffected Youth In Endtown
>>
Is everybody just gonna forget that Holly said she lost her child, and that when Clive was bombed she said something along the lines of "oh no, they killed my baby" ?
I mean It seemed pretty clear at that point that she was projecting her lost child on Clive but eh, maybe I'm interpreting wrong. The flashback holds the answers
Also could someone explain to me what the deal is with Flask, I just don't get the point of this character. Like he's an overpowered timelord and then what, why put him in the story ?
>>
>>77352395
Fuck. Allie is dead now...
>>
>>77352512
flask is the military cat lady

you're thinking of marx

and no, we don't know what the point of him was either and is parts widely considered to be endtown's weakest
>>
>>77352512
I feel like she's partially projecting on Wally and the others as well.

Maybe in the past she end up abandoning someone out of fear, and has felt guilty about it ever since.
>>
>>77352395
Allie is still best girl.
>>
>>77352609
>and no, we don't know what the point of him was either and is parts widely considered to be endtown's weakest
I'm pretty sure he was introduced as an alien element to justify the existence of Dittos and other wonky stuff.
>>
>>77352690
dittos are very quickly turning into a "get out of jail free" card and I don't like it. Everything is solved with dittos. We don't get to see Wally being a badass any more.
>>
>>77352690
Also Aaron has him appear in some form or fashion in all of his work apparently.

Dunno what his fixation is, but oh well. The only thing that really holds me back from accepting him was the resolution of Flask's arc. Short of him being this world's Petey, it doesn't makes sense that otherworld Marx and Flask get together.

But theres literally been zero hints thats the case, so it basically comes out of nowhere.
>>
>>77352799
It hasn't been that long in story since he beat up that lizard. So far since then they've escaped and been walking for a while. All the dittos have done since the fight is allow them to escape the lizards and save them from falling in a pit.

I admit I felt the platform thing was pretty out of nowhere, we've had no reason to think that the dittos were really capable of doing anything other than creating illusions until now.

But yeah, otherwise its not like they have really been stealing the show, they've only done like 2 things since Wally's fight.
>>
>>77352799
>>77352815
Yeah Aaron's gotta walk carefully on the line he's drawn.

>>
>>77351833

To be fair, Clive isn't dead nor is he an animate object. He was a person once who did saved them twice. Now he can't defend himself or speak so its easy to dismiss him. If Chic had a condition where he constantly screamed for topsiders to come and kill them it would be a similar problem. Conversely its not a death sentence, Clive will be with topsiders but he'll have a body again and be animated.

But Holly is being irrational. I'm sure this stems from a past event, like maybe she was in a group and they nonchalantly abandoned her for being to small and weak.

They are especially bad. They are not all the same lowest of the low fan multiplied infinitely to form a fandom, but overall they average out to be worse than every other fandom.

They worked hard to earn that title. They can't just decide they don't want it anymore.

A lens in my old pair fell out while I was signing the lease for my current apartment and then again while driving a couple of months later. Not safe. The result of my attempt to cement the glasses together with gorilla glue was not exactly attractive. Happily, this has now been taken off of my "to do" list and I look significantly less pathetic.

>2. Signing the contract for the new Endtown volume due out around Christmas. Here's an exclusive peek at the preliminary cover.
>>
It took me ages to figure out what, exactly, to put on the cover. I'm not a big fan of character lineups, where six to nine characters stand shoulder-to-shoulder, each in some cloying, overblown "characteristic" pose ("I'm aiming a gun!", "I'm winking flirtatiously!", "I'm checking my watch while drinking coffee!"). It's a cliche of which I've been disabusing myself for the past decade because it's absolutely everywhere and it's making me mad. It really wouldn't lend itself well to this volume, anyway, although early gag sketches had the principals (ALL of the principals) standing in front of a lamppost with Allgood's corpse hanging from it.

The Endtown covers are primarily a creative exercise in minimalism. Like the (mostly) fixed four-panel format of the strip itself, the game is to use a fixed composition as a framework for a variety of covers that are intended to hint at the nature and tone of the contents. The basic elements are intended to remain the same from beginning to eventual end but will run the gamut from interior to exterior, day to night, sun to rain, etc.. As it is, the books aren't really intended to sell themselves to the uninitiated, although they are intended to pique curiosity and not look embarrassing if you happen to leave one out on a coffee table if you have company over. There's little need to have things like synopses or other explanatory filler. Instead, Carol Lay's very kind foreword provides a nice teaser for the back of this volume (and you know which "creepy panel" she's referring to). For now, it continues to make sense to keep Holly and Wally center stage on the cover, here shown walking away into the Great Waste. Linda Kowalski was always a given for an appearance on the back cover as she takes center stage for nearly half of the book, but Kirbee's presence was a last-minute decision due to her emergence as a fan-favorite and the fact that she pretty much steals the last half of the Unity arc.
>>
And speaking of Carol Lay, it's just plain astonishing to know she's reading my stuff. As a kid, I'd see ads for her various Fantagraphics comics advertised inside the covers of Nemo. In high school, I actually got around to reading and admiring those comics, and in college, I found her work again in the pages of the various Simpsons titles for Bongo. It's both flattering and disorienting that she admires Endtown.

Anyway, this Endtown volume will be the first Patreon volume, meaning that there will be a "special thanks" page for the first time for those patrons who know who they is. I'm also going to be giving copies of volume three away in some kind of contest or other. Details once I've figured some out.

As promised (or did I? Threatened, perhaps?), here are a couple more episodes of Electromatic Radio.
Episode 1.9 - Project: Devil Bird: An Electromatic Thanksgiving

Synopsis: Matt's misguided (albeit passionate) genetic experimentation on a domestic turkey have resulted in a 476 pound, razor-toothed, telepathic "devil bird" that would like nothing better than to make a Thanksgiving dinner of him and his co-worker, Grey.

Notes: An old-fashioned "monster-loose-on-the-ship" story with more screaming than ever. The Devil Bird's attempts to lure Matt and Grey out into the hallway were originally going to cover just a couple of pages in the script, but the lines kept coming. The sound of the Devil Bird scratching and clawing at the door is me flailing away at a door with a potato masher and a whisk, something I do more frequently than can be considered healthy. Free Prize Inside! There's something somewhat resembling a twist ending at the bottom of the box.

Episode 1.14 - 100 Years of Electromatic Radio

Synopsis: In tribute to Electromatic Radio's first century of broadcasting, Matt presents historic clips from the station's illustrious (and extremely strange) past.

Notes: Another very atypical episode which explores the history of Electromatic Radio and pays general tribute to Old Time Radio along the way. The boxing match between Joe Louis and Daffy Duck is based on the real "Battle Of the Century" between Joe Louis and Max Baer that took place at Yankee Stadium on September 24, 1935 (Louis KO'd Baer in round 4 of 15). Otto Pevney, P.I. is a joint parody of the OTR series Minute Mysteries and any of a half dozen execrable Anne and Frank Hummert shows such as Mr. Keen, Finder of Lost Persons. In both, a suspect can be found instantly guilty if they make any kind of factual error in their alibi, regardless of relevance to the case (like Columbo as though it were written by especially dimwitted extraterrestrials). I have to admit a personal preference for this episode because it comes very close to establishing exactly how large the alternate reality the series takes place in actually is. The Duck v. Louis Fight skit is, imo, the best standalone skit I've ever written, and I should know, shouldn't I?

Not trying to judge, just every thread I've seen of this comic is almost exclusively furry.

But I guess it had some humans in it somewhere?
>>
>>77369074
yee it's just that the current ark has none. and due to the universe non-mutated humans are either super rare typhoid mary's or in a bio-suit hell bent on murdering everything that's not in a bio-suit.
>>
>>77369074
The first characters you meet in the comic are humans, the whole first arc has one in it.

Then again some people can argue that there never about animals either, just mutated humans
>>
>>77369128
Not him but I have only been half-assedly following these threads since they got out of Evil Lizard Town.

What significance are Typhoid Marys, and are they good guys? I can't tell if they'd be just as hell-bend on killing all muties or not.
>>
>>77370307
so typhoid mary's are immune to ore or more forms of whatever caused the mutations in the first place.
so they are doubly hated by anthro and the dudes in the bio suits.
anthro's hate them because they didnt change and bio-suit dudes hate them for the same reason.
however the caviate is if a typhoid Mary is caught by the bio-suit dudes they will vivisect them while still alive to try and figure out how to replicate the immunity.
typhoid Mary's also have to live in constant fear of being exposed to different from of the mutagen that they are not immune to and either turning anthro or morphing into a eldritch nightmare's depending on their state of consciousness when exposed.

in a way they are the worst off of the bunch due to rarity, and dual animosity from the mutated and bio-suits.

>(and you know which "creepy panel" she's referring to)
WHICH ONE? There are so many.
>>
Typhoid Mary is a term for someone who is infected with a virus but they themselves show no symptoms.

This term is applied in Endtown for someone who has been exposed with the mutagenic virus but has not mutated. These people remain human and are usually subject to brutal dissection from the Topsiders, humans who have avoided exposure by dawning biosuits, or persecution from radical mutants like Jake Jackrabbit.

Such "TMs" in the series are Al, Hank Stillwater, and several background characters.

It is unconfirmed what the chances are of someone being a TM are but if it is the same as any other mutation then it is .5%. So they aren't rare in large populations.
>>
>>77377803
Also, if I remember right, TM's can also mutate later, like, at random. I remember that being mentioned, granted this chance is very, very low. But it is possible. Making them a bit like ticking time bombs in a way.

I can agree, but there should also be more sharks, insects, and birds.

And just for curiosity's sake, what would a leech, anglerfish, or spider mutant look like? Nothing but pure nightmares, of course, but in a human form? They could be as friendly as a puppy, yet no one would ever give them the time of day.
>>
>>77382694

It seems like the further away from human the species the less humanoid it gets.

Oscar isn't a humanoid, nor is Clive or Walt's fishing buddies.

So mollusks, fish, and insects are shaped like their species except maybe larger than normal and human googly eyes.

I imagine being a leech would be a nightmare. No eyes, a freakish mouth, and what little senses you have drive you to drink blood. No beans, no but cake, no compromise, just blood.
