Well these are the reasons I don't like him
1. He has lost/drawn every single battle he has been in. Blake literally destroys him on the train. It's boring when he gets into a fight because the result is obvious.
2. Leads the white fang, despite being a human who isn't written charismaticly. It's like a white guy leading the black panthers it doesn't make sense.
3. Is just a pawn for Cinder.
4. Let Ruby get away when he could have killed her
He does have a pretty good voice actor though, always sounds good when he says "Red"

1. He's not a fighter, he gets things done in other ways. He's a talker, and comes off as charismatic.
2. Does not lead the White Fang. Is working with them at Cinder's request/order.
3. He is working with her, but she could turn him into a charcoal brickette if she wants. And he's proven that he's good at what he does, and smart enough to have a plan for when shit rockets towards the fan.
4. Every encounter he's had with her he had more important things he had to get done. And she is a huntress in training, she isn't easy to kill.

Blake only got him on the train because he wasn't expecting her dust-upgrades.
He was basically fighting her with inferior information.
2. Remember, Adam leads the White Fang, and he's in close connection with Cinder.
Roman is just leading dust-nabbing and train-ramming operations, at the end of the day he's just working alongside them.

I personally would have a episode where Jaune is worrying about his lack of progress figuring out his semblance so he ask team RWBY & NPR about how they got their aura unlocked and how they discovered their semblances. we can get backstory, a little info on how aura works and we can learn what ren's semblance is.

Yang and Blake talking while Yang trains with all her might in response to her defeat at the hands of Neo. We learn about Yang's training and relationship with Taiyang, and Blake's early life and her relationship with Adam. We learn about the relationship the both of them have with power and control.
Both of them grow closer as teammates, and in the end Blake and Yang spar, with the trickiness of Blake's Shadows standing in for Neo's illusions. It's not perfect, but Yang begins to become more perceptive. She still loses, although progress is made.
Blake leaves to go talk to Sun or something, and Yang decides to take the long way home to cool off. She's happy to be improving, but still angry and unsettled.
She sees a woman with bushy dark hair and piercing eyes appear out of nowhere."We have a lot to talk about."

Raven's Grimm mask does make her seem a little connected to the White Fang, but I get the feeling she might have her own goals and not actually be in the organization. Maybe Blake "knows" Raven as some lady that Adam would have dealings with once in a while, but not her actual identity, let alone her kids? Episode would abandon the rock soundtrack for hip hop and would consist of nothing but ten minutes of sword fighting. It would end with Ironwood giving Adam his name and the implied twist being that Ironwood is the mutant Lone Wolf and Adam the sheepdog since he was barring entrance to an area full of orphans.

I've watched episode 2 a few times now and the fight scenes have actually grown on me. Still I think I can see the problem.
The way they are editing the fights is 'This happens then this happens then this happens then this happens'
What's missing is sustaining the action throughout and giving each shot a purpose and something that contributes.
Say you want to shoot a coke commercial. You don't shoot a guy walking in from the back going to a table and opening a bottle then drinking it. That's just everything that needs to happen.
When the guy comes in you shoot his expression and include the setting, maybe it's a hot day and he's handsome and sweaty. You shoot a reverse to show he sees the soda bottle. You close up the soda bottle to show it's cold and refreshing looking. You have a shot of him picking up the soda to show how he wants it. You do a shot of the bottle being opened in slow motion to show its bubbling carbonation. You have a shot of him drinking it looking satisfied. You do a shot of him looking at the bottle smiling and you have a shot of him putting the bottle down, presenting it to the audience to convey that they too can experience the drink.
Each shot communicates an action and an emotion that puts the viewer into the experience and you edit it tightly so it never seems to re-set itself at any point. Say what you want about Monty, he knew how to do that as as good as anyone flawed though his style may have been.
To be honest they aren't awful at this but they could be better. Maybe they just need to make the fights more cohesive and sustain the action rather than interrupt it constantly for scenes of dialogue.
