To be honest, them all staying just friends is the best outcome we could hope for. I love wendip myself, but, as Alex himself realized, the show wastes way too much screentime on Dipper/Wendy subplot. That time could have been taken to develop Wendy further as a character- Perhaps we could have explored Wendy's relationship with her father and brothers, and how the loss of her mother affected her, similar to how we got important character development for Soos in Blendin's Game.
Now, if something along those lines had happened, instead of romantic subplot, the Wendip ship would have been even better for the fandom. As opposed to now, where Alex feels as though he's wasted too much time on Wendy, and she's all but written out of the show.

The shipping thing is how shows like Korra get derailed, because the creators think way too hard about 'shipping' and which pairing is going to please (or shock) the fanbase more. It's better put more effort into developing the plot and the characters themselves, and leave the shipping to the internet.
