Tony Stark not being a "nerd" in the classic sense is a funny gag, and a toy store owner who hates the adults who buy things for themselves isn't exactly uncommon.

They're not saying YOU'RE stupid for reading comics. They're saying SCOTT LANG, ANT MAN is kind of being weird for buying toys of a guy he knows and watching Star Trek because the guy is a superhero who lives a live far stranger than any episode of Star Trek.

They're not telling you to grow up. You're reading a comic. They clearly expect you to keep buying.

I fucking hate this writing style, where everything a character says is super meta and always has a quip but also tries to sound natural at the same time (but just ends up sounding like expository dialouge that tries to be funny). I think Bendis really popularized it in modern comics and Matt Fraction's Hawkeye tool it futher.

It's just such a lazy and overdone way to introduce a character to casuals. And I feel like any tvtropes user could write this shit.

>Hi, i'm the Red Ghost. Never heard of me? I was one first big threats that the Fantastic Four had to fight against. And I lost. HARD. But what else did you expect when my henchmen are freaking apes with super powers? Lame. It also doesn't help that my name sounds like that of a stereotypical Bond villian.

While he's on the subway everyone starts staring at him so he shrinks himself down to avoid them. That's a neat touch.
>>
>>68531853
Right? It's not like "ugh, ants" but more "FUCK YEAH, ANTS"

I liked it.
>>
>>68531615
> bad writing is fine if it's the first issue :^)

>>68531743
I just keep thinking of other characters because this style of writing has been used so many times.

Also, what happened to show, not tell? SHOW us that Lang is a loser, not have him be self aware and explain why he's a loser to readers with a "wink wink, so funny amirite XD" at the end.
>>
>>68531827
"But Mr. Stark, I just wanted to know what time it was."

"Well check the position of the sun, guy. Oh wait, I just finished my Superior Stark Dyson Stark Sphere! I own that shit too now!"
>>
>>68531947
Well they kinda do here
>>68529687
>>
>>68531815
But why?
>>
Wait. Are they going to pretend she never was Stature or something???
>>
>>68531947
>SHOW us that Lang is a loser

>page about his shitty apartment
>almost every page has people giving him the stinkeye because he's wearing his costume just to walk around in

So you didn't actually look at the art, you just read it and got mad about the dialog.
>>
>>68529858
Best part is, Spencer wrote Tony like this before he knew Tony wouldn't go back to normal after Axis.
>>
>>68532013

Yes, that is exactly what's happening. She died horribly as Stature, Doom managed to bring her back with Wanda's magic. The less she knows about that shit, the better.

She'll obviously find out later, though.
>>
>>68531947
>SHOW us that Lang is a loser
Dude, he fucking shrinks inside his toothpaste bottle to clean his teeth.
>>
Calling it: Cass is not actually THIS Scott's daughter, but a version of his daughter dragged from a parallel universe where she never became Stature. Doom didn't revive her, he just replaced her with a "close-enough" version, because Wanda's powers have never once done anything right.
>>
>>68532059

So how come she doesn't remember, either?
>>
>>68532059
Cassie: I just need a moment to process all this.

Scott: Okay...no...not okay. I'm going to drop this now, because I am sick of that kid trying to hit on you.

Cassie: Nathaniel? But he's really sweet.

Scott: He's Kang.

Cassie: The Conqueror?!

Scott: And Immortus.

Cassie: The creepy old guy with the big hat?

Scott: Yes.

Cassie: And he-and they-.

Scott: Have the hots for you and at least a third of them are trying to get into your pants.

Cassie: I wish I was dead again!
>>
>>68530234
You didn't like her in Battle for the Atom?
>>
>>68532137
>Wanda's powers have never once done anything right.

They rid the world of filthy mutants...
>>
>>68532139
>why doesn't she remember?
wanda's magic ruins literally everything: part like 100-something in an ongoing series
>>
>>68532057
He knew, but his editor said that he wrote Tony like that before Axis so he might as well continue it that way.
>>
>>68531947
>"wink wink, so funny amirite XD"

Yea man, having to deal with potentially losing your kid to a bitch ex-spouse is totally hilarious.
>>
>>68531990
Combination of putting out mediocre-to-shitty books. And there was that weird thing where people dug into his past and found out he was a shady businessman or whatever? Or was that a different Nick Spencer?
>>
>>68532161
>They rid the world of filthy mutants...

Multiple X-Men are still kicking around and ruining everybody's lives, though. She clearly fucked up again, as per usual.

Here's hoping she goes for the hero gig a second time, but this time as Stinger. Loved that costume.
>>
what's Pym's current situation? Is he still Wasp?
>>
>>68532229
I would never besmirch the name of glorious Doom, anon. I'm saying that the reality-warping bad luck magic of a second-rate sorceress clearly interfered with the perfection, knowledge, and unmitigable skill that is Doom.

She's shrunk to the size of a toy play set in the very last page of this comic, what do you think?

That her size-changing superpowered dad did it for her, you big fat idiot?

Lang could have just shrunk her down.
He said he could earlier. >>68529663
>>

Just Pym again, but he's doing the odd hero thing.

Hickman kind of sort of had him as Yellowjacket for a panel, but who knows if that will carry through to other books.

what other books?

Thanks, OP. I don't have much to look forward to right now, so I'm glad this has gotten off to a good start.

Marvel barely has six months to make casuals like Scott Lang, and this comic is nothing but pandering to them. Great job taking to bait, you fucking faggots.
>>
I really liked it, first Ant-Man comic I read. It all made sense when I found out this is the same writer from Superior Foes.
Guess I'm gonna keep reading this series, when does the next issue come out?
>>
>>68532176
Honestly, they should keep him this way for a while longer. I know, it's comics, it won't last, but it's been pretty Superiorso far.
>>

>>
>>68529763
Technically it was her amazing stratagem of making her self so large she was impossible to miss while standing still in front of Dr Doom's blaster after trying to help people attempting to murder his future wife that got her killed.

Mighty Avengers, Irredeemable Ant-Man, Ant-Man and Wasp, Beyond!, West Coast Avengers.
none of these are Lang though. You COULD read his origin story but it's already covered in the first few pages. Or you could read Fraction's FF but every single writer out there ignores or retcons it.
>>
>>68531978
That page would be better and probably funnier with no text.

>>68532031
I was paying attention to the images, and they convey his situation pretty well without the crappy "jokes."

But given that there's so much fucking dialogue i was expecting the writing to be an important aspect and be good. It wasn't, it was the usual Nick Spencer garbage.

>>68532177
They're certainly setting the tone with Lang's monologue that it's meant to be comedic, not a character expressing his sadness.
>>
>>68533373
>Or you could read Fraction's FF but every single writer out there ignores or retcons it.
What was so bad about it?
>>
>>68533216
12 issues would be a good run, at least.
>>
>>68533392
>that it's meant to be comedic, not a character expressing his sadness.

Or it could be a coping mechanism for how shit his life is.
>>
>>68533393
Matt Fraction did a bad jobb and has a hateboner for Doom so it was awful with an awful ending that pissed all over Hickmans amasing FF run. It could also be that it´s compared to said run, and simply can´t compete.
>>
>>68529890
>Morning Glories

Had a Lost-vibe for me (story never going anywhere, every revelation just begs more questions until the writers don't have a clue for a satisfying end...), so I dropped it. Did it ever get better?

>>68534008
ten more pages. It's going to go back to normal after first issue, I think.
>>
Kinda sad Darla got dropped and that they're acting like Cassie's whole life after Scott died never happened, but otherwise it was a great issue.
>>
>>68534022
still ridiculous. though i admit im a dcfag so im use to 30 story-page books being 3.99, which is the marvel baseline for regular comics
>>
Loved the Superior Foes, but this? Meh. It didn't make me smile as much and the story so doesn't really look that interesting so far. Plus: I dislike that they basically "forgot" everything that was left over from FF and my gut tells me Scott was a "single dad" the last decade(s), rather than having problems seeing his daughter at all. I liked that setup a little more (struggling/being responsible to be a good dad, without all that divorced drama).

It wasn't bad, and I can see what they are trying to do, but ... meh.

I still have hope next issue will be better.
>>
>>68532848
You aren't supposed to like good things anon.
>>
>>68534321

I think they assume no one knows anything about/gives a shit about the Ant-Man legacy other than Pym slapping Janet once 30 years ago, so they can do whatever they want and no one but the hardcore shut-ins will care.
>>
I'm conflicted on this comic.

On one hand I really liked it and found it entertaining, but on the other hand it REALLY feels like "Ant-Man 101: An Intro to Scott Lang". That's okay, but it kinda comes off like a lot of the guy's history, particularly Cassie's has been erased here. The thing is, I don't know if that's bad?

I feel like Cassie's whole independent hero shenanigans have been erased. Does she just not remember anything after coming back to life, or am I retarded? I can't even tell if Scott's wife knows.

While this seems like one step forward for Scott, it feels like 5 steps back for Cassie. She seems to be de-aged a lot and her entire career seems to have been forgotten. I don't get it. If you're going to make Cassie a big part of Scott's comic, as she should be, how can you just gloss over the fact that she did all kinds of shit on her own after he died and then died herself.

Maybe I'm being a fucking moron here guys, but I don't get it.

To be fair, its the guy's first ever ongoing, after having been in a team book, after having been dead for 10 years, after languishing in obscurity and shuffling around teams.

>>
>>68534492

I would say his wife knows. She knows her daughter died and that's why she freaked out about Scott and the whole shrinking business.

She lost her daughter once and is determined to not lose her again.

As far as Cassie is concerned, I don't know if she remembers, but I'm sure she does. She may just be settling back into things. She was dead and I'm positive that her mother would want her in school, living a normal life.

Maybe she's enjoying having a normal life and is content in not immediately suiting back up. That doesn't mean that she won't, but in a issue one that's supposed to be about Scott, having her pine for the good ole' days seems like it would be better for her own story and not Scott's.

But that's just me.
