I disagree, the relationship between Nicole and Richard hasn't really been explored enough to know how it went like that, but we do know she tried to protect him from his own stupidity early on, so it could be said it's somewhat pity-based (the fact that she let him do jack shit at home is further proof of that, The Job notwithstanding).
Meanwhile with Penny and Gumball we have two very passive characters in the relationship, who were pushed to cement it due to a mayor even, where the former is soft-spoken but in any way a push-over, and the latter somewhat dumb but heavily assertive in the things he likes, specially when they involve Penny, so really I see no connection between how things went ith both pairings besides they started at a young age.
