Bit of a tangential topic but I think the problem with a lot of AU works is that they're more or less a quick question without any depth or exploration into the idea.
"What if Weiss worked at a fast food place?" "What if Yang was a football player?" "What if they all went to college?" "What if they were maids?" Stuff like that can be fun and cute, but it's hardly ever going to make for anything over than a momentary novelty.
