you should deticate more time on refining it rather than churn out pages, these look more like 3 minute sketches than anything
visuals are most of what make a comic, if you want readers to stay you gotta appeal

Rendering for the render god. It's kinda weird trying to do this in a new program, but I think I got the sequence to be kinda funny at least.

>>80929843
Even if it is just line art, that's not a lot of time to be spending on an entire page, Anon. Especially when you're not very experienced at it you should be taking the time to double and triple check every panel for anatomy, look up image reference for poses, iterate a few different page layouts etc.

Hooray! One more chapter down, three more to go to finish this arc!
This chapter I actually had quite a lot of fun drawing because of the variety in character/monster design. Plus I felt that chapters 3 and 4 had gotten the story a bit TOO much on the serious side and that needed to be rectified.

>>80928234
>What completely turns you away from a comic, no matter how well its written or how good it is?

I really can't think of much; plenty of things irk me, but there's little I can get over.

>What turns you towards?
Pre-WWI historical setting

>>80929843
>a page takes me 1-2 hours.

That's not very long at all, though... I mean, it's fine for short simple gag comics. But for a more story-based comic you could afford to spend more time on it

>>80930876
Which program is that?

I had also thought of having joke panels after each chapter, but I'm barely able to keep up with he main pages themselves!

Bad webpage. Small text. Bad art. Artist and/or writer is a shithead.

Man, every time I see Gwyn's legs I'm more amazed that she manages to fly.

>Which program is that?
Krita. I've been playing around with it for the better part of a year because I like the way it handles selections, layers and custom brushes better than GIMP (and something about the way the brush tracks just feels nicer), but I didn't want to make the switch mid-chapter.

The joke strips are because I really want to avoid having a complete hiatus in between chapters when I'm only updating once a week to begin with. I figure having smaller updates for two months while I get chapter 2 ready to launch is better than having no updates at all for a month.

We're pretty proud of Osakan Riot. She's a love letter to joshi puroresu (female pro wrestling from Japan) and hopefully we can use her right. We'll find out a bit more about her and where she is in life later in this issue.

If anyone's wondering, the 3 joshi wrestlers she is primarily based off of are Bull Nakano, Combat Toyoda and Jaguar Yokota.

Hey guys, long time /co/ lurker, first time exploring this general. Couple questions,
The goody bag was excellent, I have no artistic training so anatomy and reference help is great. It's a slow process and I figure with enough practice the drawings will get better.
But my main issue is coloring. K6BD and unsounded have clear, refined coloring. I'm using coral painter, and I've played around with hue, but I can't get colors to be "bright" or clean.
Is it a brush setting? Or an effect?
>>
>>80934441
Gotcha, it's a pretty neat comic so far. Keep going!
>>
>>80934694
I'm not sure what you mean by bright or clean. Could you explain in more detail? Maybe provide an example of how others do it and how you get it wrong?
>>
>>80934694
this is something really tough to deal with, i've had trouble with it myself for years. i've learned a few things that might help
1. colors are relative. nobody has ever successfully made something look bright and glowy in broad daylight. you have to darken everything else, simulating what your vision naturally does in the presence of something bright, if you want to depict something looking bright
2. make sure youre in RGB mode not CMYK. a lot of the brighter colors are denied you in the latter
3. crank saturation up, then raise lightness slowly. sometimes you can't have a light AND saturated color that looks bright instead of pale, that's just the business of the beast (Xenoblade X makes this clear when you try to change the visor/lights color on your mech. some hues simply do not glow)
4. Sometimes you can fool the eye into seeing a color that aint there. make the center of something white or yellow or some other super light color, then fade out to the actual color towards the edges. if you look closely at a picture of a lightsaber the blade is white, only the glow is colored. that's because at a certain point everything's white if it's bright enough.

85 KB, 558x344
>>80934927
Thank you, this is a huge help. My other issue is refining. The panel I posted earlier is simple brushwork and line art. But this example of gunnerkrigg has far, far superior coloring. Is this saturation again? Hue? What is he doing to get from initial coloring to how most digital art looks in the end?
>>
>>80935135
youre using a brush tool and scribbling. try using a solid pen tool and drawing solid shapes. or just using fill bucket, no shame in it.
Then AFTER you have solid colors, that's when you can add brushing
>>
>>80935290
Thank you, that is absolutely what I needed

I might storytime the book chapter when it comes out though.

Anyways, sorry that I've been so dead lately, I haven't been aloud to draw on the computer.

Anyways, I can get on the computer again, but I have no access to my tablet at the moment, so here's a part of the script for Chapter 17 The Tournament, Part 1.

I can say that some of the main characters will look different when we see them next time, some more than others.

>>80934441
I like issue 2 so far very much. It's funny and light hearted while having some deeper implications. It breaks my heart that Jackie thinks Janice is "lame" like all teenagers do, yet idolises Miss Melee at the same time and Janice just decided to live with that. She keeps the secret. Having the responsibility but never getting the appreciation. Am I reading too deep into it? Don't answer. I like over thinking. And super heroes.

if he's burnt from head to toe i really like the hidden faces of the first and third ones, maybe the head of the third with the body of the first
>>
>>80928719
Well, I like anything with either good writing or good art. I rarely dislike anything unless it's got bad writing AND bad art.

If I had to be more specific, I'd say bad pacing is what can really ruin a comic. I read a lot of manga so it's an issue I encounter pretty often. On the other hand being accustomed to rahter long-running series, western comics tend to feel a bit rushed or underdeveloped to me.

I especially notice this when comparing cape to action manga. While the manga action scenes are usually pretty long, thought out and even complicated, the obligatory ""fight"" scenes in cape comics are almost always just one or two double-spreads of the characters throwing awkward poses. It has no flow at all.

I guess that's what I get for being a weaboo faggot.
>>
>>80938696
oh okay. well, then the same thing goes basically. youd have to be really careful with those bandages to let the hair puff out like that. probably not possible
when you said trapped by a monster i thought it had wrapped itself around him. My bad
>>
>>80930876

Does anyone else have the problem that they sometimes think of amazing scenes without having a framework for it? They just pop into my head out of nowhere and I spent sometime fleshing them out down to poses, composition, even paneling not knowing anything about context.

Then I take a step back and think: Yeah, this is a great climax for chapter 27 of this story that doesn't exist.

When I come up with a consistent story at all it's usually reverse-engineered from several random scenes like that...

>>80941207
Everyone has those "cool scenes" or "awesome moments" they want to do. The hard part is the legwork building up to that; that's what actual story telling is. If you can only imagine single scenes that are in all likelihood a mishmash of tropes that you've seen in other stories in the past, that makes you a stupid ideas guy.
>>
>>80941207
Do you have a sketch book or scripts on your pc or just notes?

I don't keep track of the stuff enough and I've probably forgotten dozens of chapters worth of good material over the years...

When you think of a scene is more visual or dialogue / character based?
>>
>>80941543
well i think it's more that, in an attempt to be more than just a 'eh some stuff happens and i have some good ideas' guy, i try to think of something that might actually impress an audience, but GETTING to that point is another matter
>>
>>80941596
just notepad documents.
if it's too visual to write down, i sketch it. but usually i dont think of visual stuff ahead of time. not beyond 'a neat costume idea or hairstyle'

Well there doesn't seem to be main characters, perspective jumps around a lot, the world is modern day but has fantasy races and monsters as well. One of the storylines i got to read a lot of involved a group of people called trackers, were hunting down vampires and slaughtering them indiscriminately, even though only a single vampire was actually murdering people. A guy who is a reincarnation of an ancient necromancer who is cursed to slowly transform into a skunk monster and his androgynous demon friend got caught up in the trackers murdering a hive, put on masks and tried help the vampires when the murderous vampire shown up and started killing the trackers and vampires alike, the necromancer and demon manage to save a female vampire who's legs were broken by a tracker so the necromancer has to piggyback her around as they try to get to their car, that's when she took the sketchbook from me, there's more arcs and stories, and all her sketchbooks seem to be the same universe, its frustrating because i haven't read many complete stories of hers, she's so shy ever since she gave up on a digital art career

Alright so I'm trying to start my first webcomic, it's about an imaginary friend named "Reddie", who is a fuzzy red monster who loves fun, yet she hates her owner, Amelia, who is miserable and hot tempered. Reddie then hangs out with Amelia's neighbor, Eric, who loves fun and has no imaginary friend. So the two hang out, yet I don't know what direction I should take this.

Yet to tell you the truth, I don't know what to do with this, I always get these ideas, draw some sketches but then I have no idea what to do next.

Should I just think of the ending first then start with the beginning?
>>
>>80949008
just draw something draw a lot of stuff man.
>>
>>80948940
people understand their suggestion won't be taken every single time. they'd rather you just get on with it, do whichever one you choose, then they can give ANOTHER command. the fun is giving lots of commands and then finally yours gets in
>>
>>80949008
an imaginary friend who doesnt get along with the kid that imagined them, but gets along with a different kid? that's nuts man. that is.. probably a unique concept. I don't think i've ever heard that before
>think of the ending first?
I would say think of the satisfying reveals here. The explanations. the reasons for this happening. Then work towards how you lead up to those. I mean how would a situation like that be solved? what does it MEAN? is amelia not really miserable and mean inside? is Reddie proof of that? are they going to sort of.. give her therapy?
>>
>>80949041

>an imaginary friend who doesnt get along with the kid that imagined them, but gets along with a different kid? that's nuts man. that is.. probably a unique concept. I don't think i've ever heard that before

Yeah, I'm trying to do this where Amelia was once happy but SOMETHING happened, the only person that knows is Reddie, yet whenever she tries make Amelia happy or to get past it, she still wants to stay miserable.

So she starts hanging around Eric, who dealt with a lot but was always happy and liked fun, so whenever Amelia would get mad and want to be alone, Reddie sneaks off to Eric.

Sorta like Reddie cheating on Amelia as an imaginary friend in some comedic way.

>I would say think of the satisfying reveals here. The explanations.

Great advice, I'll need to really think of some good reveals with not only Amelia but Reddie too. I thought about making it really dark but I don't know.

(Might change the name Reddie too, I just made that name out of nowhere)

>>
>What completely turns you away from a comic, no matter how well its written or how good it is?
Slooooooooooow update schedule. I'd love to get into Lackadaisy Cats, it looks funny and gorgeous, but with months between updates I'd forget everything that had been going on

>What turns you towards?
If it's not very well-written or good, signs of genuine enthusiasm/desire to get better from the artist can persuade me to stick around

>>
>>80939888
Well, it's not so much that I keep it intentionally messy as that I don't want to clean it up before I'm absolutely sure about the phrasing. I usually get a lot of ideas for how to improve the dialogue while I'm working on a page, and it would be a pain to have to erase cleaned-up lettering that I'd spent a lot of time on.

>>
>>80951063
>but with months between updates I'd forget everything that had been going on

This is exactly why I haven't touched Lackadaisy in... I honestly think it's two years, at this point.

It's a shame, because Tracy Butler is a great artist. And with that I mean she actually does a lot of research about what to draw. It's on the level of obsessive Eurocomic artists, honestly. Most people would just go "1930's prohibition? That's fedora's and tommyguns, right?" but Butler does stuff like mention some radio in the background is anachronistic by a period of maybe ten years, but she put it in because it looks cool. Or she gives a short history of bakelite. Point is, she knows her stuff.

BUT... I really hate the pacing of Lackadaisy. It feels like one of those webcomics that's just never going to get to the point. And if you're only going to give me a few pages a year, you can't waste them on characters being cute. And I understand that's the appeal of the comic, but it also has the semblance of plot in there. You've got Freckle, or whatever his name is, being crazy on the front page, but for most of the comic (until he picked up a tommygun) he was a young, PTSD-riddled veteran who jumped at his own shadow. Shit, girl, get to the point!

>What completely turns you away from a comic, no matter how well its written or how good it is?

As seen above. Bad pacing. A lot of webcomic artists seem to be under the impression that, because they're not producing for a limited number of pages, they have to pack every inconsequential moment in there. Sometimes this gets really bad. There's this zombie comic where one year in real life seems to roughly correspond with one day in the comic. So this is a post-apocalyptic comic set in an apocalypse so fresh that the power hasn't even gone out yet. And where the main character should have been bed-ridden for its entire run, on account of her broken fucking ribs. That sort of shit just really takes me out of it.

Write them down, set them aside for later. What you may have is half of an idea, or only enough of an idea for a few good pages. If you write it down, let it sit, and think on it, you may find a way to improve one of them, or even better, roll multiple ideas into one product.

Posted in the Batman thread, got no feedback, basically trying to "loosen up". First image (top left two panels) is from a autobio comic I'm working on, very minimal pencilling and inked with a fixed-width pen (.30 rapidograph I use for speech bubbles, usually--figured it'd do me good to step out of comfort range tools-wise), will be "coloured" with one shade of screentone (LOVE using that stuff). Image on right is from a story I'm redrawing (basically 'cause of line quality--inking with a Hunt 102 but want to keep a "spidery" line without TOO much width variation, though I do want some) 5 pages of. Again, trying to be looser and not render as much as my "usual" style, the bottom left image which is my ongoing comic "Roger Recovery" which is a bit tighter, blueline, then graphite, then inked with a Hunt 108 (really flexible crowquill nib originally for calligraphy I believe, loadsa cartoonists use 'em, though, I like their line quality a lot). Any feedback, criticism etc is appreciated. My art isn't supposed to be "pretty", I'd rather be a good cartoonist than a good artist if you get the distinction? Like I make sure my lettering's always tip-top, to me it's as much a part of the art as the actual drawings.

I always love seeing your stuff. My only issue is the drawings don't always read because they're so nuanced on every plane - I'd try scanning them in, white to transparency, locking opacity, and making those lines lighter shades of gray as they recede into the background. But, assuming you wanna keep it traditional - you could also try using tone, rather than line, to illustrate planes further away from the viewer (kind of like so - http://www.tcj.com/color-workbook-1/)

I really love the illustration on the right, though - the guy in profile gives me a Clowes vibe.

Oh, okay, I get what you mean, thanks! And thanks very much for the kind words familia means a lot.
Love Santoro's theories on comics. I've made a few of his "composition aids" (y'know the overlapping circles, diagonals etc) that I sometimes bust out if I've done a4 size roughs to check composition and stuff...always been intruiged by the Kurtzman method (adopted by Bagge and Spiegleman and more) of tracing paper, different colour pencil for each layer, and refining the page w/each layer...I think Charles Burns uses it as well? Then I'm in awe of guys like Jaime Hernandez who can just "plop out" a few incredibly loose, sketchy lines and then produce a beautiful page when they go to ink...Clowes was talking about looking at some of his original Jaime pages on a lightbox and not seeing any white-out anywhere...
Trying to work up the courage to do a colour comic or at least a two-or-three colour comic--but can't decide on the medium. I did think about getting lineart scanned onto acetate and colouring on the reverse? Apparently Dash Shaw did that for some of his Mome/Unclothed Man stories.....
Anyway, thanks again!

oh and also, if you drew a line across the waist, it could have a swivel there. that way one of the arms could quickly point directly forward for pinpoint aiming with what i assume are guns in the hands (going by the 'before') and also for spinning enemies around and throwing them. though obviously you'd want the cockpit anchored to the pelvis so the poor dog doesnt get dizzy

>>
>>80971190

>>

shit i think you could do that in one sentence

Thanks! I had a lot of trouble with staging when I started out, so you saying that means a lot to me. >>80971427
First one is easy - have the character call her "mom". If you can, incorporate a bunch of happy family photos on the wall of their home in the background or on a table or dresser in the foreground.
Second and third, maybe have the mom threaten to tell his dad about this mischief when he gets home. If you have the space, have show the mother going "oh, that kid" with a smile until she realizes it might be more serious than usual.

I kind of like this, fuck, fuck, FUCK digital lettering, though. It's so careless, to me. It's as much as a part of your art as your "actual" drawing. And don't give me the : "but I have really bad handwriting!" excuse. I don't care. At least it has PERSONALITY. Get a fucking Ames guide and do it by hand.
Sorry but shitty cookie cutter digital letterr=ing really riles me, Anon. You're doing your own artwork a disservice by using someone else's boring bullshit. YOU'RE BETTER THAN THAT AND IT'S OBVIOUS BY LOOKING AT YOUR FUCKING DRAWING SKILLS!!!
>>80957792
I thought that a bit. But you could say that abot Liz Suburbia and she has a book out from Fanta, so....
>>80960296
There's this weird program called paper, pencil and ink that some people use...I hear it's a bit of an "industry secret", though.
>>80971717
I guess the "goal" is to tell interesting stories clearly. I just finished redrawing that page...the halo-ing is supposed to separate the fields of vision; you're the second to comment so I reckon it isn't working!
Maybe I should just stick to bottom left style....

A boy falls in love with a girl.

Unable to confess, he is gifted by a deus ex machina with the girl's phone number. Never minding the strange area code, he immediately calls her, and is overjoyed to find out that she has a crush on him as well.

But, the next day, when he recounts the previous day's confessions to the girl, she only looks at him with a perplexed expression. After some investigation, he finds out that the girl he called is not the same girl he fell in love with. In fact, she doesn't exist in this universe at all. She is the girl's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with the MC's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of her crush.

Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of LOVE.

I literally wanted to call the gun Cronengun but it sounded too similar to that episode when Rick n Morty Cronenberg up the place.

That scene from Existenz is always an inspiration.

Thank you, you're right, but my handwriting is really, really, really bad. It took me ages to write the one or two handlettered things here. I'm so bad that in middle school teachers would call my parents in tears. I'm practicing in the meanwhile and maybe I'll be able to switch to handlettering in the future.

So I had a really fucked up childhood. Like almost cartoonishly fucked up. Would anyone be interested in reading cute comics about it?

it all comes down to if you can do a comic well
and if you can, sure why not
