What do you guys think of this movie? I just finished watching it for the third time and still have no opinion, I just don't know what to make of it.

I think it is cute, quirky and funny but the storytelling is kinda confusing at times and didn't really care for the ending portion of the movie.
>>
>>63895601
I think it was awesome
>>
I thought it was fun and near flawlessly executed
>>
>>63895662

Same here.

I know a lot of people bitch about the ending, but honestly that's where the movie went from a silly, fun little romp to something with actual emotional impact.

It managed to show a good lesson that kids need to hear (everyone is the hero of their own story, it's better to work together as a team, etc) without talking down to them.
>>
>Morgan Freeman making ghost noises.
>>
>>63895766
Also a somewhat understated one for the parents. Let your kids play how they want and join in with them.
>>
>>63895601
>but the storytelling is kinda confusing at times

The story on the level of the Legos themselves is very simple, I think the confusion comes from where it intersects with the real world?

I always interpreted it as everything regarding the base of the individual minifigs' characterizations and how they view the world, their ideas and opinions, are filtered through Finn's own ideas and opinions, but they are still autonomous characters that act on their own agency. Not ever single detail is accounted for by Finn's own play, but he has the general idea of things. The details themselves of what is said, what exactly the characters do, and how they interpret the world around them, is filled in by the story itself coalescing and crystallizing around the narrative that Finn starts.
>>
>>63895871

The little bits of actual stop-motion animation and real-life manipulation like Ghost Vitruvius dangling in front of the camera were my favorite parts.

Also, the top of Lord Business' tower popping off and motoring off from that side perspective.
>>
I still can't believe that Liam Neeson voiced Good cop.
>>
Who is the best character and why is it Bad Cop?

Anyone excited for Lego Movie 2 releasing May 26 2017?
>>
I'm really impressed with Everything is Awesome. It works perfectly to set the tone, as satire, as foreshadowing, and gets a completely different meaning at the end of the movie. That and it's genuinely a really catchy and fun tune. But what else can you expect from Mothersbaugh

>>63895766
>You don't have to be the bad guy

I didn't expect that to hit me so hard.

>>63895955
That's how I interpreted it too.

The Lego universe exists in a separate plane, but depends on the will of a creator who builds the major elements, assigns everyone a role and orchestrates a plotline.

Me too. She made me groan in the trailers, but it didn't take me long to start liking her in the movie, and I genuinely felt for her after the destruction of Cloud Cuckoo Land.

The entire cast was great and had excellent chemistry.

Emmet is so precious.

>>63896794
I'm not. I really doubt they'll manage to recapture the charm of the first, especially with a different director. Here's hoping for the best.
>>
I hated it, despite really really not wanting to. I was expecting a silly kids movie, sure, but I also figured there would be plenty of doublespeak with plenty of subtle gutbusters. This is the clone high dudes, after all.

But nope. Just a brat movie. It didn't help that the comedic timing was COMPLETELY off, and the dialogue was cringeworthy, especially from WildStyle.

The middle ages lepracy joke was pretty good though, as was the 'FIRST TRY' bit.

I dunno, I was completely let down.
>>
>>63897199
You know, I was actually pleased by the lack of "adult" jokes. No mature references, no double entenders, just wholesome comedy for the whole family.
>>
>>63897388
There's a difference between 'adult' jokes and jokes that aren't just 'guy does something wacky and funny in less than half a beat'. Where was the absurdism that can make kids laugh just on the pure lolsorandom and the adults laugh because there are existential implications/they're so outlandish they make them laugh too? Where's the offhanded deconstructions of existing tropes for fun and profit? Where's the explaining of jokes, and in doing so making them even funnier?

The movie was one long 'let's make the kids freak out and giggle' fest, and I hate that I have to say that.
>>
Everything was okay. Nothing really bad about it, but nothing awesome either.
>>
>>63896827
>

Someone on /co/ here billed it to me as "Hypercrisis: The Movie", and while I laughed that off at first, dammit he was right. The whole movie was centered around the interplay between the creator and his creations, and how the characters operate within that framework, and yet expand on it in ways that are not controlled by the writer/creator/director/whatever. It's a surprisingly good illustration of the concept of the creative process on multiple levels, both on the more simplistic "you don't have to follow the rules" and the more metaphysical interaction between Finn's own direction and story, and the autonomous agency of the minifigs and their world itself.

This movie was so damn charming in every sense of the word

I thought it was gonna be a lame 3d CGI kids movie

Then they had EVERYTHING be Legos even the fire was plastic bits and Lord Business had the super mega lord thing going on that everyone makes for a lego guy

Then they had a in universe Top 1 radio song playing with Orwellian adverts and posters and cameras and Honey, where's my PAAAAAAANTS
>Bazooper!

Then they had the minimal face expressions and moving hair pieces

Then they had Emmet walking on the instructions and Emmet-cam when he was running away in the western world

Then they were building stuff with Legos and they had Batman and space Lego guy and Star Wars and Shaq what time is it IT'S GAME TIME

Then they had Mr.Business walk into the Lord Business suit again creative and nostalgic and had Mr. Bad Guy and the relics with ingenious name favorite being Sword of Exact Zero

Then Emmet's sacrifice and the reveal which brought everything together

All in all it was entertaining and very creative. I thoroughly enjoyed it
>>
The cool thing about the Master Builders is that I know I always had a set of minifigs that I either created from spare parts, or got from other kits, that I always thought were THE COOLEST and were always the special ones that were the heroes and had special powers, and whenever I built stuff, they were always the recurring characters in whatever cast I created.

That's basically what the Master Builders are in this story.

And I can just imagine

>Finn playing around with those minifigs in the basement, building stuff
>accidentally knock a random construction worker off of the display onto the ground
>falls onto a Krazy Glue cap that was lying discarded on the floor
>it sticks to his back
>a legend is born

>>
I'm still conflicted about the "twist".

From an ideological standpoint, the father is in the wrong. He needed to stop being such a massive sperglord and learn to let other people have their badwrongfun.
But at the same time, from a practical standpoint, the kid is in the wrong. Just because it's a toy and you're a kid doesn't give you free reign to fuck with other people's stuff. Plus, it's not like he didn't have his own collection of Lego to play with.

Everything makes sense and is good from a thematic standpoint, but the scene itself is downright painful to watch after the second or third time. The fact that it's such a massive and jarring tonal shift doesn't help, either.
>>
>>63902019
>Plus, it's not like he didn't have his own collection of Lego to play with

I understand what you're going for, but the dad buys GIGANTIC amounts of lego for himself and then doesn't share them with his son, or even share his love of legos with his son.
At their root, lego are toys, and a good parent should realize that in their kids eyes, they are just toys. In the future I could see the dad keeping his collection "off limits" to a certain degree but expanding his son's collection, which would be the best choice imo.

is it weird that I would give her the D all day and half the night?

I love Mark Mothersbaugh soundtracks.
>>
>>63899328
I wish they had made Benny's Theme into a full track instead of just ten seconds tacked onto the end of Cloud CuckooLand.

I'm pretty sure getting one-upped by a two year old would be a blow to anyone's ego, not just a sibling's.

IT WAS HILARIOUS
BUT IM AFRAID IF I WATCH IT I WILL GET THOSE FEELINGS I HAD FOR HER
THEN I WILL BE SAD AND ATTEMPT AN HERO
WHY CANT I HAVE HER BACK
WHY SHE DONT WANT ME MAN
FUCK FUCK FUCK
>>
to be honest, I kind of lost it when Will Ferrell asked if the figure (that he knew was meant to be him) was actually the villain

I mean finding out that you're the bad guy in your own child's story is a real gut punch

It's also part of WyldStyle Leads in the soundtrack.
>>
I think the movie has some great humour

>Double decker couch
>NO PARENTS
>pig carriage, general poorly played animal sounds
>vitrivius being beheaded
>>
>>63908402
Wasn't just the animal sounds. If you listen, quite a few sound effects are done as if by a kid making them with his mouth.
>>
>>63899956
I wish Benny had had a bit more screen time. I'm a real Lego Classic Space fan and I absolutely loved the character.

>>63899509
>Ahaha I just noticed the good cop is essentially a jolly irishman stereotype
>>
>>63908454
Oops, for some reason made it greentext. Sorry
>>
>>63908454
Yeah, Neeson let his Irish accent go for this one. It's nice to hear instead of the generic British he usually goes for.
>>
I loved how the movie played on many lego fans inside jokes:
- Benny's helmet being broken at the bottom, a frequent problem with old style astronaut helmets
- using razors and knives to split pieces, and other sorts of interaction with general household objects
- gum, the bane of many lego parts used as a weapon
- claw hands

And so on.
>>
DARKNESS
NO PARENTS
>>
>>63908531
Also, the fact that no matter the set, you also wanted to include a spaceship in it.

Or ifyou were playing with other, at least one wanted to.
>>
>>63908600
Benny was everyone who ever played with legos as a kid.
>grab a bunch of pieces
>build a spaceship
>???
>Profit
>>
Milhouse being a master builder will never stop boggling my mind.
>>
>>63908416

all the "AYY-YA-YA"s in the Old West made me nearly die laughing in the theater.
>>
>>63908531
>- Benny's helmet being broken at the bottom, a frequent problem with old style astronaut helmets

And he was missing the visor, those were the first things to break for me.
>>
>>63908632

I turned damn near every kit I had into spaceships and moonbases eventually when I was a kid.
>>
>>63908700
The first space helmets didn't have visors and they ALWAYS broke like that.
>>
>>63908711

Oh I didn't know that. Before my time, I guess.

>What do you guys think of this movie? I just finished watching it for the third time and still have no opinion, I just don't know what to make of it.

Maybe you should watch the movie nine more times.

I know I watch movies multiple times that are terrible, right? Not like my overwhelming fascination with something unique and well done compels me to keep coming back.
>>
>>63900526
>And that joke is very jarring and takes you out of the movie.

No, not really.

The movie got me back into legos.

I just got the Jedi Interceptor. Old dream come true.

Anyone else do this?
>>
>>63909748
Yup.

Too bad i barely have any Lego, so i can't build shit.

What are some good house-themed sets, full of furniture and shit? The only one i have in mind is the Simpsons house, but it's pretty inaccurate.
>>
Why did bad cop have such a problem with chairs?
>>
>>63909892
His grandparents were killed in a chair and table factory by some man holding a baby

Am I the only one that didn't like the VA's? Vitruvius, Lord Business and Bad Cop all sounded terrible.
>>
>>63910376
I think you are the only one who didn't enjoy Morgan Freeman, Will Ferrel, and Liam Neeson all giving really good, fun performances.
>>
>>63910518
Morgan Freeman had change in emotion or tone in his voice
Will Ferrel was just terrible in general
Liam Neeson was slurring the shit out of his lines

They were 100% phoned in performances from them. Everyone else was great, but those 3.
>>
>>63910518
I swear the only reason they got Morgan Freeman to do a voice was to make him say the weirdest/dumbest things with that voice of his, and it was fantastic.
>>
>>63911010
Yeah, he's been shoehorned into so many shitty roles the last few years it was really nice to see him do something fun and entertaining.
>>
>>63910577
>They were 100% phoned in performances from them.

But that's wrong
