Which episode made you quit the Simpsons? For me, it was Barting Over.

>In this episode, Bart discovers that he used to be a child star in commercials—and that Homer blew all the money he earned. In retaliation, Bart petitions the court to be legally emancipated and move out of the house.

I hadn't really been avidly watching the show for awhile, and just had it on as background noise. But after this one? I finally just stopped turning the show on.
>>
The one with Jonah Hill. They made it so Skinner was a super cool principal until Jonah Hill pranked him really hard and made him an asshole. It makes no fucking sense.
>>
And then I check Wikipedia to get a plot summary and the title of Barting Over and discover that it was written by Andrew Kreisberg, the next writer on Green Arrow.
>>
>>63835638
You made it way deeper than I did
>>
>>63835638
That episode actually was the one that drove me away as well.

That, and Homer air matrix skateboard battling tony hawk.

That was terrible.
>>
I didn't reag quit over any particular ep.
it was more of a drifting away around 2001-2 as I found my self doing other things when it was on.
>>
I think it was Bart meeting 50 Cent. That's the last episode I remember seeing before the internet piracy one a few months ago.

>>
>>63835694
That was an episode? I don't recall that one.
>>
I used to watch the fox Sunday lineup throughout HS even though the Simpsons were deep into being shit just because nothing else was on. Then I left for the Marines and didn't have access to it and just never felt the desire to go back and I've been a civilian again almost five years
>>
>>63835841

That's the really sad thing about how awful the Simpsons has gotten. I don't even really watch reruns anymore. Most of the other shows that I've loved, or currently love, I'll watch reruns for if I have nothing better to do at the time. Not with the Simpsons, though. For some reason, I just never really have the desire.
>>
>>63835852
Apologies for the shit run on sentence. I'm tired
>>
too lazy to look at a req, but which season is regarded as the best? The only one I remember watching as a kid was the one that had the first Treehouse of Horrors.
>>

I find that I just can't find reruns of anything before it got terrible.
>>
>>63835638

I... liked that episode. I haven't watched The Simpsons regularly for quite a while, though. I also liked Ned getting married to Edna, the episode where the Asian girl kisses Bart, and I didn't hate the Lady Gaga episode. Those are about the only recent episodes I've seen.

What episode would you say is the absolute worst of the worst of modern Simpsons?
>>
>>63835787
This I think was the point where I dropped simpsons forever.

Wasn't there a episode that homer fought a biker with a motorcycle. I recall a prolonged motorcycle sword fight.
>>
>>63835904

There's a lot of claims to the throne. My personal favorite is the first one with Unky Herb. The second one with Unky Herb is wonderful, too.

>What episode would you say is the absolute worst of the worst of modern Simpsons?

Saddlesore Galactica

>In the episode, the Simpson family rescues a diving horse named Duncan from the abuse of his owner and keeps him as a pet. When the cost of keeping Duncan rises, Homer and Bart train him to be a racehorse. Duncan wins several races and, as a result, Homer is threatened with death by a group of jockeys. Meanwhile, Lisa is upset over her school unfairly losing the musical band competition at a state fair and writes a letter to U.S. President Bill Clinton in protest.
>>
>>63835843
Awful episode(like that needed to be added).
Bart pranks Skinner or some shit, then he learns he's not the best prankster to ever go to school.
Cue him meeting Jonah Hill.
They become friends.
Bart eventually realizes he's a loser afraid of growing up.
He gets him a job at Krusty's show doing something.
Bart thinks he's going to sabotage himself by pranking Krusty.
He actually becomes a writer or some gay shit.
It's awful.
>>63835638
Isn't Blink 182 their actual name? Where's the joke? Is the Joke Barts a smug fuck who hastily corrected the band's typo?
I just......I've become so bitter.
>>63835787
Me too, that was where I realized it. That exact scene. That's when my childhood died and I realized the Simpsons could be and was shit.
>>
>>63835924

Really? One of the local stations where I live plays the Simpsons every weeknight and they play everything from Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire to the 2010s.
>>
>>63836040

It doesn't mention that horse jockeys are actually elves that live in a magical tree. And there's a musical number.
>>
>>63836113
I only have basic cable, so my options are limited.
>>
>>63836040
It always seems like half the episodes that /co/ hates would be better if they were simply not The Simpsons. Like, I don't remember the Lisa subplot for this one, but I don't remember being too offended by this episode.
>>
>>63836159
It's basically Lisa complaining about being cheated out of winning some music competition because the winners seemingly only won because they used glowsticks to make the American flag while using the same tired routine from before whereas she actually tried something new. In the end Clinton shows up and awards them the winner because he agrees. And the moral is so long as they complain they'll eventually get what they want. Marge says that's a crummy lesson. Clinton says he's a crummy president.
>>
>>63836159
I forgot those two plots were in the same episode. The jockey elves are pretty fucking surreal.

>What can i say i'm a terrible president.
>>
>>63836040
>>63836142
It's what happens before and after the horse storyline, that bit about Lisa's high school band competition where they lost because a rival school pulled out sparklers at the end of their set and one the contest, all of the jokes at the beginning and end of the episode failed miserably. It was so bad that I wouldn't be surprised if most of you only remembered the horse racing storyline.
>>
>>63836263
Ohh yea.

>>63836275
Same.
>>
>>63836280
>>63836263

>>
I literally don't remember. I haven't watched a new episode of the Simpsons in over 10 years.
>>
>>63835736
He also writes for CW's Arrow if that makes you feel any worse.
>>

I still find the episode hilarious. I don't even care that it's all one giant non-sequitur unrealistic plot. It was -funny-
>>
Homer vs. Lisa and the 8th Commandment (1991)

Stopped watching after that. Horrible episode.
>>
I've been watching The Simpsons for a few months now, I started with the Tracey Ullman shorts and I'm on Season 9 now. I was gonna watch up to the point where they started to get terrible, and I'm thinking of stopping at 10 cause I really don't wanna watch all 25 seasons or episodes all about guest stars. What's a good stopping point? I've never really watched the series that well before.
>>
>>63836625
I think around Season 10 is a good time to stop.

I stopped watching after that episode where Krusty hires Natale Portman to do girl segments on his show,

>The best is yet to come.

>>
On average, how many celebrity guest stars do they have per season these days.
Because it seems like every fucking week it's another.
>>
>>63836625
There's an argument to be made for Homer's Enemy, but I think the 4 eps after it are worth watching. The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson is I think the tipping point of the Simpsons, so the first episode of season 9 is the last truly great episode. As you progress into season 10 you'll notice fewer and fewer good episodes as well. At about season 12 they stop all together.
>>
That one episode where Homer and some others went to Rock camp or something. It was poorly written full of special guests who were all making fools of themselves. I mean seriously, compare that to Homerpalooza.

I don't know when I dropped off, but I will never forget the first episode I didn't laugh at. The Last Temptation of Krust.

Overloaded with celebrity guests, virtually no Simpsons humour, and a feeling of emptiness hit me.

To quote Deus Ex: This isn't the end of the Simpsons, but you can see it from here
>>
>>63835638
That time that Mr. Burns and Homer went to Loch Ness to find the Loch Ness Monster. Then they found him. Then the monster worked in Mr.Burns casino, then the episode just sort of ends.

>He actually becomes a writer.

He becomes a writer for the Simpsons?
>>
>>63836625
Season 9 is a perfect time to stop. You've already started seeing the drop in quality with things like The Old Man and the Lisa and the one where Homer climbs the mountain.

A better use of your time would be to watch the earlier seasons again.
>>
>>63836625
Keep going until you get to an episode that you really, really despise. Then stop there.
>>
>>63839725
damn you all keep going back and back, there were so many episodes i forgot were really bad, the one i recall (by memory no fucking idea of the title) is that one were Homer spent all the saved money in a RV or something, it was a chapter going nowhere starting nowhere, just random stuff happening
>>
I think the one that kind of tipped me off was the one where they do a documentary on Homer being rich, and we find out at the end that he's just squatting in Mr. Burns summer home.
The thing that struck me is that it felt… to quiet. Like, when characters talked the lines not only fell flat, it was like they were sucked away. There was no ambience to it. They just laid out the jokes, it felt like there was no progression.
>>
>>63839827
Although if you feel like continuing season 11 is the last season that has decent episodes season 12 is where it become irredeemable.

>>
>>63840854
That episode was bad, but it's such bullshit when people put the fucking cat "dying" on the level of the Armin Tamzarian thing. Literally no one gave a shit about Snowball until that episode (male or female? who the fuck knows), and it seems like people are just trying to find even more reasons to hate the show when they make claims like that (like there aren't enough actual legitimate reasons already).

If it was the dog that'd be another story, but, well... it wasn't.
>>
>>63841051
The problem isn't that it was Skinner or Snowball or Fat Tony.
The problem is that ha-ha, status quo joke guys, isn't this hilarious?

No, actually, it wasn't. That's the problem. That kind of thing can work once if done well (and the Skinner shit wasn't, if you're wondering). But not three goddamn times. Even the first time it shows formula fatigue and writers that try to pass self-referential comments on the show's status as comedy.
>>
>>63841051
It goes without saying that the Fat Tony episode was worse, but the Snowball episode had them even referencing the Principal and the Pauper episode. They did know what they were going for there.
>>
Sadly, The 500th episode. I was giving the Simpsons a second chance for the hundreth time and this episode came out. I sat there watching it, it didn't make me laugh, it didn't make me smile, and at the end of the pointless mess the writers stuck in some neeneer neener which basically amounted to

>We know this episode is shit and that you guys are going to complain, so we'll make some pass at our fans being crazy nerds like Comic Book Guy to cover our asses.
>>
>>63841573
Now that I think of it I wonder, did reading the crazy fan posts back in the 90's just made them stop caring and use it as an excuse to deflect criticisms?

because I think like the vast majority of people thought the show was great then (it was getting complaints as far back as season 1 and 2 for not being like the shorts), they ignored it because those criticisms at the time were as close as you can get to objectively wrong. later there were actually legitimate points, but again, the show was still good enough that treating them like a joke didn't matter.

the problem is that now they still believe that everyone who casually bitches about a show on the internet is some sperg on usenet (or harry shearer) instead of the norm nowadays, and continue thinking they're amazing. despite what a lot of people say about current simpsons writers having grown up on the old show or some shit, pretty much all of them are middle-aged or older and extremely out of touch.
>>
>>63841573

They've been pulling that shit since at least Season 12, and it chapped my ass back then, too. Who do they really think likes being told, "We know this is shit, but what the fuck are you going to do about it?"
>>
Bart VS Lisa VS The Third Grade. Up until that point, even though I could recognize that it had none of it's former greatness, I could at least get a single laugh out of the episodes. That was the first episode I couldn't, and the last episode I watched as it aired. There may have been a few funny eps since then, the only one I can really think of that made me laugh was Lost Verizons.
Seasons 2-8 was the golden era as far as I'm concerned.
>>
That fucking episode where Lisa had a restraining order on Bart and started stabbing him with a screwdriver-tipped pole to make sure he kept his distance. And she starts using it to make his life hell, and nobody really gives a shit even when Bart is stuck living outside and gets nerve damage in his arm. Marge gives the most half-assed attempt to get Lisa to stop being a cunt, but since Lisa is the pet character she's pretty much in the right because of reasons.
>>
>>63841820
Dear god, the monster who wrote that also wrote one of my favorites, Skinner's Sense of Snow.

It's like, if you grew up with this childhood friend who was funny, witty and oddly insightful at times. But as you got older you saw that he was falling into bad habits.

Every now and then you'll check up on the guy to see if you can relive the glory days, but he just gets worse and worse, and is steadily becoming more and more of an asshole.

You want him to get better, to be like he used to be... but you steadily realise that'll never happen, and the idea of smothering him in his sleep becomes more appealing.

Lastly, more of the big Peter vs. Homer fight scene was shown, beginning with them growling at each other...

Peter: “Simpson!”

Homer: “Griffin!”

The two begin comically punching each other, both of them exactly mimicking both the punch itself and their head swinging back for a while. They then begin pummeling each other and rolling around on the street, before Homer finally grabs Peter by his throat and begins to throttle him… at which point Peter freaks out and leaps back.

Peter: “What the hell? That really hurts!”

Homer: “I do it to my son all the time!”

Peter: “No wonder he’s fat and stupid!”

Homer: “That’s your son!”

“The Simpsons Guy” airs as the one-hour Family Guy season premiere on Sunday, September 28th on FOX.

I can't remember when I regularly watched the Simpsons, but the episode that made me stop watching altogether was when Homer and Marge had to flee Lisa and Bart in a Catch Me If You Can inspired scene. Then Homer fucked Marge as they went over Niagara Falls.

I just remember thinking I didn't enjoy a single moment and did not really like any of the characters any more. Haven't seen it since.

>>
I'm 19, I use to watch the 6pm Simpsons (ausfag) that aired most of the old episodes when I was a kid.

Sometimes I watched the new ones but they kinda sucked.

That was around 2001-2005.

Stopped watching just after The Simpsons Movie that I thought was alright.
>>
The episode where Homer becomes a tow truck driver, that was the episode where I just stopped.
>>
I slowly quit the Simpsons after they started airing in the evening (Germanfag here). It was from season 11 on. I was... 13 or 14 at that time. I remember the episode with the fairy jockeys and something with Moe and Maggie. Last funny thing I remember was a scene from the boygroup episode where they show a meeting of the MAD people and they apparently spent the night on a parody title.

>Writer 1: Why don't we call it, "Everyone Hates Raymond."
[the writers laugh]
>Writer 2: Well, we stayed up all night, but it was worth it.

Apart from that, I don't know much. It has probably been ten years now or so since I last watched any episode other than season 1-10.

I will never understand why this episode gets so much hate, aside from the "hurr muh timeline" faggots. For modern Simpsons, it was pretty damn funny.

The butthurt in this thread is incredible. Simpsons is NOT Golden Age anymore but it's still better than most things on tv. Certainly better than Failmly Gay, and less weird and creepy than American Dad or Bob's Burgers (though it's not as as good as those shows, mainstream audiences won't care because those shows are hipster).

"What could they possibly owe YOU? They've given you thousands of hours of free entertainment."

>Ray Patterson's remarks about how he is moving away from Springfield and the people can wallow in the mess they made by electing Homer was reference to a 1990 show in Las Vegas where Redd Foxx was billed. Twelve people were in attendance. Foxx was introduced via a band that played the theme music to Sanford & Son, whereupon an angry Foxx stated he would not perform for such a meager audience and walked off. The band, unsure of what to do, played the Sanford & Son theme music once again.

Up until that point I considered the Simpsons just another stock show, unique though in that it had a great past that I loved as a kid. It was ok, I'd watch it if it was on and probably enjoy it.

Something about the Lady Gaga episode just made the whole thing seem foreign to me, like I was watching a show that I had never seen before and that it was kind of a shitty show.

>>
I used to watch reruns of the old ones all the time as a kid, then when I was like 12 or so started watching new ones every Sunday around season 11. Back then I was just watching it because I liked The Simpsons. I didn't know anything about what seasons the episodes I liked were from or their titles.

And so it continued like that for a few years, then when I was 15 or 16 I decided to learn about that and was calling myself a fan of the show, so I started paying attention to upcoming episodes and their promotional art and I got swept up in it all.

Before I knew it I was preparing for season 19 when something clicked. It wasn't any particular new episode that set it off, it was a rerun, of any old one, don't even remember which, but it made me laugh. I genuinely laughed. It was then that I stopped. I didn't start hating on it, I just got it surgically removed from my life and I've never been happier. I did download the Lego episode out of curiosity (it wasn't good, stopped half-way) and one about Comic Book Guy getting married (just picked a random ep to see how the show is now, didn't finish) but other than that I've been clean for about 7 years.

Episode 8F21, The Otto Show.

>The episode guest stars Michael McKean as David St. Hubbins and Christopher Guest as Nigel Tufnel. Harry Shearer, who is a regular Simpsons cast member, also starred in This Is Spinal Tap and reprises his role as Derek Smalls.

I couldn't believe it later when suddenly Harry Shearer of all people was bitching about how the show went to shit, dropping all characterization in favor of random humor, celebrity cameos and crossovers.

The stink that was kicked up by other people closely associated with the show about the Critic crossover years later is astonishingly hypocritical - here was an episode which simply rides the coattails of a bigger act just as a celebrity cameo or crossover would do, consisting of random humor and an A-story so weak that Shearer is forced to talk very slowly as Skinner over the end scene to pad it out. It's like the writers threw together a 21-minute show and said "fuck it, close enough."

Every weakness the show has, it has had since at least this episode. It's a vile piece of marketing sold as comedy, about as original as a clipshow, and somehow overlooked by former staffers who have been vocal in their disapproval of how the show has continued.

After that, I just never felt like it was must-see TV.

I think there was one where Homer and Bart kicked out Reverend Lovejoy because they wanted a more interesting priest, then they wanted him back in even though Lovejoy was happy with his new job and everyone else was happy with the new reverend so they made a fake plague and chased out the overwhelmed new reverend to put Lovejoy back in.

It's almost comparable to the episode where Marge and Homer realize they need legal guardians for in case anything happens to them, so they appoint them, then they get jealous of how good they are at caring for their children after like several days of caring for their children and fire them.

It's telling that this unironically made it into the show in season 8, right on the edge of the dip into zombie town. The writers used this attitude as an excuse to ignore all criticism because haterz.

Just because you're providing entertainment for free doesn't mean that people don't have a right to criticize. Or that they're wrong. Or that you're not a dick if you use this excuse to spite your fans and make fun to them. Or that you're not a lazy piece of shit if you knowingly shit out abysmally low quality over many years.

Anyway, I think the episode that first bothered me was the tennis one. I was a kid, but I knew something was wrong.

Here in a modern day episode where The Simpsons create a black hole - the only joke they can come up with to reference the movie named "The Black Hole" is... to have comic book guy throw a DVD into it.

That's not clever. It's not even talking about the quality of the film because it's considered a good movie from Disney's live action era. This is the kind of joke some hack writer out of college who looked up "black holes" on Wikipedia found under "Other things named Black Hole"
