How would you do a D&D cartoon/comic?
>>
"HEY MORRISON YOU GIBBERISH-SPOUTING SCOTTISH FUCK, WANNA WRITE FOR A HIGH FANTASY FRANCHISE CARTOON?"
>>
>A team of adventurers has adventures
>they're all episodic and they just do it for loot
>at some point they find out the same mastermind is behind many problems
>here's the first big villain
>selfish characters learn some honor
>paladin/righteous character maybe dies heroically

and maybe in the intro, or at some point you very briefly see glimpses of dice-rolling or the characters say things out of character that make you understand it's all an orchestrated D&D campaign. This is not blatant but rather hinted at.

For the grand finale of season 10+the movie or something you finally reveal openly that it was just a campaign and somehow the main villain is a self-insert for the DM who has some real life issues to face. At the very end he "lets go" and stops being a massive (even cheating?) cunt, and the villain plays fairly once again, dying.

People get "le feels" for the horrible real-life truth, barely touched, behind the game, and people who just like adventure are equally satisfied because the real-life serious undertones remained subdued and hidden throughout.

If you re-watch the series you can tell that maybe a character dying is because the player needed to move to another state, and somewhat reconstruct the story of a few people playing, even if it's hard and more theorycrafting than actually clear.

People like it for the 2deep4me lore (which in the end doesn't have any philosophical themes, just the normal life of some kids) and for the fact that even without it, it's a decent adventure show.

There.

Reboot the old D&D cartoon but with upgraded to modern times. Also keep Greg Weisman the fuck away from it, for once I want a proper ending for a fantasy cartoon.

Stereotypes and cliches are fun because most often they work.
>>
>>78756640
Like yoshihiko and the demon king's castle obvi
>>
>>78757323
But I would never whatch a cartoon about the most common type of dwarf and elf. I can see it everywhere.
>>
>>78757645

Good thing they don't cater to your niche taste then or they would be bankrupt.
>>
>>78756640
Only if the rogue/thief character is black.
>>
>>78757645
Where else can you see it, exactly?
Most fantasy coming out now is trying to crib from the Song of Ice and Fire series, and sticking to humans as the only sentient race.
>>
>>78757680
What? Vitrolic elf and dwarf are in the most cliche stories everywhere.

Bonus points if the elf s uptigh and the dwarf is an old blacksmith.

There should be more ways of doing a dwarf/elf vitrolic partneship without doing it in the same way.

Fells Five continusly played with such cliches. You should read it. It's good.
>>
Half of it would be set IRL, with a group of players in the game. Comedy sort of like Welcome to Eltingville, though certainly less dark.

The other half high adventure with their respective D&D characters in their game worlds.

Each aspect reflecting different plots/themes of the other.
>>
>>78758072

>elf is actually the most laid back and the dwarf is a poet and a singer with touchy feely emotions

It breaks the mold decently in some places.

semi related. Do the Big Two have any good Sword and Sorcery Books that focus on a party of characters? I know there's Demon Knights but what else is there?

>>

Good necromancers is not a bad idea.

But I dont get their obssession with Kobolds, but some ideas are also cool.
>>
>>78756640

Don't start with the concept of a D&D series. D&D is a generic medieval fantasy combat resolution ruleset. Not exactly alot to work with there story-wise in itself. Any series that aims so low as start with "D&D" is going to be bad and/or short-lived.

What you need are *stories* to tell. Like the Dragonlance saga. Or the Time of Troubles in Forgotten Realms. Or at least start with one of the less-generic settings in D&D like Planescape, Spelljammer, or Dark Sun.

I'm surprised someone hasn't done something with Drizzt. This guy used to make the New York Times Best Seller lists, Hasbro seems to be completely inept at handling their IP and is likely ripe for a takeover (rumor was Disney was looking their way, IIRC).
>>

D&D has had multiverses since the first edition. Manuel of the Planes and all that jazz?

Also, if you ever play a kobold, don't amke it a magic-caster. I made that mistake. It's hard to play the sly and tricky underdog when you have phenomenal cosmic power

Overlord and Log Horizon were both influenced by D&D games that the respective authors played together (along with the Altina author). Hell Overlord was basically D&D with a few MMO features thrown into it.
>>
>>78775086
Wait?

Overlord and Log Horizon writers played DnD together?

I know the Log Horizon writer said he added the MMO elements because if it's too PnP focused Japan might get confused.

No, how would you go about writing a Gunstar Heroes comic?
>>
>>78775156
Yes. The LH author has noted that the Overlord author comes up with the craziest possible characters when they play together.

>>78775186
Shalltear and Albedo are kind of annoying, but the other females make up for it. Warlord Enri and Aura are my favorites because they actually do shit and still respect Ainz. If it had gotten a second cour or season the maids would have a chance to shine as well. Albedo is also a lot better in the cut stuff where she's basically a more sadistic Demiurge.

Cartoon? Remake the original cartoon. There's a shitload of potential hidden under the 80s limitations.

Comic? Try to go for something that articulates the tabletop game. No major over arching epic plot, just successive adventures that are mostly self-contained, but with character progression. A good mix of humour and drama. The key would be having pleasant art. Avoiding artists that are overly grim or prefer jagged and flamboyant 'big' designs and go for someone with a smooth art style that lends itself to action and subtler 'acting'. Alex Toth rather than McFarlane.

Fantasy works when you give it a bit of versimilitude, a false sense of reality. WoW armour, obnoxious large swords and massive capes don't do that.

You know all those horror stories you've heard about players being so mind-numbingly stupid they destroyed the world? Or that one ass who abused a loophole with devastating consequences?
>>
>>78776733
How are those horror stories? That's what DnD should be all about- guys goofing off and having fun together.
>>
I would really love someone who's been involved in tabletop roleplaying to do a comic about the groups they've been involved with. Just a straight comic that occasionally shows the "in game" world and their characters slaying monsters and whatever, interspersed with the reality of a barely habitable apartment with five gross sweaty nerds around a table. There are issues where the party struggles because their leader, Paladin Joramund, played by Jason who has a job and a girlfriend, is frequently absent and the party suffers without his buffs and ability to tank.
>>
>>78756640

>>78760885
Muh mellon. I'd kill for a Silmarillion series, if only so I could see the angriest fucking elf in existence.
>>
I would do something almost exactly like Conan the Barbarian, the films.

I would write a story where savvy DnD players could pick out the rolls. They could read it and find every failed or successful check on their own, and revel in their secret club bullshit.

It may even just boil down to adapting a campaign I actually played to the comic, but I'd worry more about play style than property. It's not about seeing a beholder, it's about the unique way the group dealt with it. D&D is about unique ways of overcoming challenges, and a comic should reflect that.
>>
>>78756922
