First official photos from Anastasia: the Musical (based on the Don Bluth film) are out
>>
Changes from reviews +the audio that leaked

-No Rasputin, Bartok, or magic

-Villain is a government offical whose father was one of the Romanov executioners, and who as a child heard the screams of the dying family

-Dimitri and Anastasia's connection is no longer that Dimitri was a servant who saved Anastasia and her grandmother, but he and Anastasia made eye contact at a parade and had a 'moment.' Lame change.

-A lot more historical than the film. Details about the Romanov family, their lives and execution, as well as details regarding Russia's new government are a lot more prominent.

-The only song from the film that is missing is In the Dark of the Night, for obvious reasons. A Rumor in St. Petersburg + Paris Holds the Key to Your Heart + Learn to Do It are extended and have changed lyrics. A few new songs.
>>
>>
>>
>>
Another change is the addition of some 'darker' elements, such as the almost depiction of the Romanov's execution, and Anastasia's nightmare sequence which now has her family surrounding her, with Alexei telling her 'I'm going to die... we're all going to die... why aren't you with us?'

Oh, and some of the songs are moved to different places in the story. Journey to the Past is no longer Anya's first song (instead it's a song that gives us her backstory) and instead it's the Act I closer. Once Upon a December takes place before Journey to the Past as well.

Good change

>Dimitri and Anastasia's connection is no longer that Dimitri was a servant who saved Anastasia and her grandmother, but he and Anastasia made eye contact at a parade and had a 'moment.'
Bad change.

The secret passageways succeeded in making the royalty seems so magical. That's so lame.

I guess her dog is gone too?

This still seems neat though. Would go see or watch a bootleg of instead.
>>
>>83217561
>I guess her dog is gone too?

Well.... there's no Pooka in the show but at one point Anya remembers her dog, which was one killed with the royal family.
>>
I really like the production design

>-Dimitri and Anastasia's connection is no longer that Dimitri was a servant who saved Anastasia and her grandmother, but he and Anastasia made eye contact at a parade and had a 'moment.' Lame change.

Why would you change that?
>>
>no in the dark of the night

Couldn't they just change the lyrics or something? That song was really good.
>>
>>83217697
Probably because they made the connection of the new villain (Gleb) to Anya that he was living in the village where the family was killed, and he heard the family laughing and living while in captivity, and on the night they were killed he heard their dying screams.

It is a lame change for Dimitri though. Given the context of the song ("In a Crowd of Thousands," basically 'it was just the two of us in that crowd') they could very easily make it better by instead having the moment occur at an imperial ball where Dimitri is a servant--the crowd of thousands being all the people there to pay homage to the family.

>>83217717
It really doesn't fit with the rest of the music in the show or the new villain.

Also the more details I'm remembering, the more they really REALLY need to overhaul Dimitri before they take this to Broadway.

Because not only did they sever the connection of Dimitri saving her (which leads us to that amazing moment with Sophie 'There was a boy, he opened a wall...' but also the scene with the empress 'You saved her life, and mine, and yet...') they make him having the music box a biiiig fucking coincidence. he just so happens to find it at the marketplace in St. Peters--err, Leningrad--and buys it.

they also need to work on Gleb.

In the casting call he's described:

>a member of the Chekist secret police; a zealot with tremendous intensity and a dangerous sexuality; as the play progresses, we see him rise in power and position within the political party; he is in love with Anya but would not be above killing her if necessary

But in the posts from people who saw it and the audio he's definitely too comedic and not threatening at all.

Might as well drop Scar from the Lion King musical and Jafar from the Aladdin one.

Though maybe they feel sorry for making an actual historical figure an undead warlock with singing bugs and a bat henchman voiced by Hank Azaria.

No fucking way is this based on the animated movie. Said film is an obscure Disney-lite film and the summary of the play sounds way too different from it.

Same plot, different antagonist.

Animated film: Anastasia survives the rest of her family as an unknown orphan named Anya with no clear memory of who she is or her past. Dimitri and Vlad are two con men who want to get the reward money for returning Anastasia to the Dowager Empress. They find Anya, who looks just like Anastasia, and convince her that this could be the key to finding out her own past. They train her by having her take dancing/etiquette/history/etc lessons on the way to Paris. Along the way, they are hunted by Rasputin, an evil zombie wizard, because Rasputin can't rest until all of the Romanovs are dead. After the grandmother finds out Anya really is Anastasia, Rasputin attacks her and Dimitri. They defeat him and run away together.

They train her by having her take dancing/etiquette/history/etc lessons on the way to Paris. Along the way, they are hunted by Gleb, a Russian police agent, because the government can't rest easy until they know all the Romanov children are dead. After the grandmother finds out Anya really is Anastasia, Gleb attacks her and Dimitri. They defeat him and run away together.

The core of the musical is the animated film's version of events. Like any stage adaption, they have added more songs and details so that it's a 2.5 hour stage show instead of a 90 minute film.

If you're trying to say "oh it's some obscure film they would never base something on it," I don't know what to tell you other than Google is your friend.

The original concept for Bluth's Anastasia film didn't have Rasputin at all--it did have a government agent. Then Bluth added Rasputin, but he still wasn't the wise cracking undead wizard in the final film--he was just regular Rasputin, having survived the Revolution in hiding, hunting down Anastasia for vengeance and not to fulfill a curse.

The removal of Rasputin was because the director wanted to bring the story closer to realism and away from the total fantasy of the film. Obviously, as the director said, it is still a fantasy due to the happy ending--but it's now more of a "What if" historical fiction rather than the fantasy family animated film with magic powers, curses, and talking bats.
>>
Is Rasputin really that well-loved? I always felt he was out of place compared to the rest of the movie.

I always liked his scenes. Obviously, he was out of place, but he was still gold all the way.
>>
>>83222355
Yeah. It's based on the 1956 film, which itself is based on a 1950-something play. Fox told Bluth to find a film to adapt into a musical that they had the rights to, he went through the catalog and decided on Anastasia.

The '56 film is excellent, definitely give it a try. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcGHT43i7QM
