I think in some ways Kaworu sees Shinji as his ideal, Shinji has a home, people who love him (although he doesn't realize it), and a future. And the parts of Shinji that Shinji regards as flaws, Kaworu thinks make him all the more beautiful.
Likewise, Shinji sees Kaworu as his ideal for many reasons.
They see themselves as inferior and the other as perfect.

You're right, I agree with you. They both have notorious flaws, but they decided to accept each other until the end (that's why Shinji hesitated on killing him, and Kaworu gave him a new chance to live). Even if Kaworu could be jealous because Shinji had what he didn't, I feel he wanted to belong to Shinji's world in an extreme way to forget everything about his angelical origins (like he does in NGE2), and it's all because Shinji was probably the first person to showing him a pure and unpretentious kindness.

That was a really, really good meta. Thanks a lot for taking up the time to write it, anon, it made me realize some things. And I can see now how that ending where Kaworu ended up alone in front of the red sea makes sense with Shinji's line in EoE "If no one wants me then they can all just die", for example. I hate to admit it, but that ending left me kinda confused. It was to be expected for my jp level, though.
And welp, I guess it's time to dig for those NGE2 translations, because I'm missing a lot. (Also Kaworu dying by a gunshot? It sounds so simple, even for him to be already heavily injured, I mean, what about his AT Field? Wasn't it necessary for him in order to die to use an Eva/DSS Choker/stuff like that? That left me perplexed, as I've seen people tend to say that to justify his death by Shinji's hands.)

Anno contradicts himself when it comes to everything. Other Eva characters, the show's themes, and so on, his viewpoints have clearly changed over the years.
I think Anno's intentions in making Kaworu lovable and ideal are valid, but because he had no prior experience in writing a character like that it didn't go as swimmingly as he wanted.
Though when you look at the Japanese fanbase's impressions of the character, it's obvious Anno was at least somewhat successful.

If I had to explain it, I'd say Anno likes the shoujo kind of homo and Sadamoto likes the shounen kind of homo, so they both are technically "embracing" different things.
