and for more realistic reasons, Its plentiful and incredibly cheap here (especially when its in season) and if you still have a living grandparent in the US that lived through the Great Depression, you'll know that they still have an almost obsessed fascination with having tons and TONS of food in the house and making sure that everyone has huge heaping mounds of it on a daily basis. The few times I went to live with my grandmother, she would make what was literally an entire couldron of goulash (cooked elbow macaroni mixed with tomato sauce and about 10 lbs of ground beef and butter). The pot was so large it would take up all 4 burners on the stove. and bowls that would normally be used to store food in the fridge...well she'd serve it to us IN those bowls she gave us so much. Then whatever we couldn't finish she'd just put into the fridge for another meal. Don't get me wrong it was amazingly good especially with her home made garlic bread, but now I see how ridiculous it was, lol.
pic related, thats basically what it looked like. She'd also have a fridge full or parmesan or charp chedder cheese for us to sprinkle on it too. Her motto was basically; if you can see the bottom of a bowl or plate while its being served to you, there's not enough food on the plate.
