I still prefer fried bologna over fried salami, but you do you.
I do prefer cold salami over cold bologna, though. Unless it's garlic and jalapeƱo bologna, which is the ultimate of the mechanically-reclaimed-meat-based deli offerings.

I never actually talked to anyone about it much, but always kind of assumed fried bologna sandwiches were white-trash poverty food.

I was first introduced to them (on onion bagels with American oil cheese and a fried egg) while I was at university in the US. The roommate I had my second semester had me try it and I liked it.
