That would make sense! In fact, early hot dog vendors would sometimes call hot dogs "Coney Islands" so to not freak out fresh immigrants new to English into thinking they're eating dog sausage. I assume the terms red hots and the like came about in similar ways.
However, the Coney dog, a hot dog topped with a seasoned meat sauce made primarily of beef heart, topped with mustard and raw Spanish onion came about in Detroit. In urban areas of Michigan, Coney Islands restaurants are spaced about a block apart. It's amazing how many there are. They all specialize in coneys, breakfast, hot beef or turkey sandwiches (turkey or beef served generously on Texas toast smothered in gravy), and gyros.
Detroit coneys are a much wetter, chili-like sauce whereas Flint style is a fine-texture ground consistency, with a big cumin backend.

I was actually on a serious B-Dogs kick for a while, but lately the Farmers Market is all about the Lebanese stand for me. I really liked what Mamang (the Vietnamese stand that used to be a food truck has) has but I dislike the people there so much it actively makes me avoid it. Lame assholes kind of ruin Vehicle City Tacos too.

Nashville reporting in. We had a Detroit style Coney place here for a few years, but it went under. Great chili dogs, fries and MI soda (Faygo, Ginger Ale etc...). I miss it.
