I'm going to cheat and bring a strip of bacon from home. I'll probably tease you with it and say it's your dinner.
1 bell pepper, 1/2 carrot, about 1/2 pound beef chuck (this is where most of the money went), 1 stick of celery, a clove or two of garlic, a can of chicken stock.
Dice the veggies.
Cut up the beef chuck into cubes. S+P, a bit of flour, brown them in a pretty big frypan over high heat, rolling them about so that about ~3 sides are browned per cube. Remove those.
Toss the garlic and half my strip of bacon in the pot. Get it cooking up, add the onions. Then the carrots and celery after 1min and bellpepper after 4 more.
Toss in the other half my strip of bacon. Little do you know, my little cheaty bacon arrived rubbed down in herbs - Thyme and Basil, and just a bit of marjoram.
Add cut up potatoes and put the beef back in, cook it 3 hours, covered with a good seal (important)
Pull the pan, skim the scum, taste and salt as needed.
Bowl it and serve.
Beef stew.
