Going down to a sorta kinda girlfriend's house at Georgia in a month and she wants me to cook her Japanese food. I mostly make Japanese at my house so I've got tons of practice. We're ordering around 80$ worth of ingredients online because the markets round us are shit, but they're just the all around basics for a standard Japanese diet. The fanciest thing in the order is dried shrimp.
What do you personally think is complex enough to spice up the Wow! factor while still being affordable to make?

Boil some salmon in the oven and do a rice bowl then make soy sauce fizz and freeze it for later, then toss dried shriml in the pepper mill and grind over salmon for extra taste, remember to cover 3/4 of the surface approximately so you know you didnt use too much. Take out soy sauce from freezer and toss it in the pan dried ginger chips we made earlier and then just do it but after before do the bowl of rice and sprinkle some sesame paste in the fish dish. If you are talking Japanese cuisine. I will give you an easy one. A traditional Japanese dinner for college kids would be curry or grilled mackerel with miso soup. Add clams if you wanna be fancy
