There are probably only a handful of actual cooks or chefs that even come to this board at all. Most everyone else is just a home cook and a bunch of fucking autistic pretentious hipster foodie wannabes that spout off utter bullshit and argue with everyone about everything just because they can.

The few actual cooks that may come to this board come relatively infrequently or just never post or identify themselves. No real cook or chef would find this board engaging or useful at all since it's a cesspool of retards who know literally nothing about food, other than junk food, fast food, ramen and cheap chain pizza.

You'd be better off just going to a restaurant and talking to an actual cook if you want a legit answer.

I used to be in the junk food catagory (aside from the occasional roast chicken or chuck angus burger) but now that I live alone I cook a lot more often since eating bad shit constantly is expensive and unhealthy.
Today I made a pretty badass home made sweet and sour chicken and garnished with peppers, onions and bean sprouts and baked it in a convection oven till the sauce ran smooth as a baby's bottom.
Learning how to make even basic shit is extremely rewarding and fun, I'm glad I come to this board more often.

yes

>how would you describe your life on a scale of 1 to 10?
Days that I work I'm typically around a 7-9. Even bad days are 7's because I really enjoy what I do. I also have been in the industry long enough to know how to separate work from home and vice versa. And also how to not take things personally at work. I do get pissed off sometimes, but its a "heat of the moment" sort of thing and not actually that mad.

>are you happy?
Yeah, I'd say so. I've had 6 weeks off because of renovations and I'm losing my shit at home. I

>do you have time for activities apart from your job?
Yes. Most chefs who say they don't have time for stuff are memers or don't know how to plan accordingly. You will miss weekend activities. I don't get to do things like camping or go to weddings (unless I am in the wedding party). But for the most part you can still plan around your schedule. Just stop getting piss drunk every night after your shift, and don't ask for a lot of time off. That way, when you do ask for time, it's likely you'll get it. I know in the above I said I have had 6 weeks off. But I rarely take a day off otherwise.

>something i should know about a living life as a chef?
Uh, it's hard work. The more you put into it the more you get out of it. Just try to be better everyday.

Depends which career you want to take seriously. You can definitely get a job as a prep-cook or dishwasher and still have time to be a musician. If you want to be a chef, it's going to take 100% commitment. My wife even knows that a lot of the time she takes a backseat to my work. (to be fair, she knows its not that I don't love her or anything, I'm just committed to what I do and it is really important to me)

Hey op cooking for a living is real hard work, you dont get paid well. Its worth it on a personal level for me because I enjoy learning and getting better. But if you think its like the cooking channel or the food channel its not.

Also you can break up cook professionally in kind of two categories one of which its just a job and who cares the other is trying to make a name for yourself and working under great chefs to learn.
>>
>how would you describe your life on a scale of 1 to 10?

>are you happy?
yes
>do you have time for activities apart from your job?
I play video games whenever I dont work/sleep. I hang out with my friends once a week if our day off coincides (2 of us have random days off). I cant imagine doing anything else that isnt a personal hobby in my free time: having a random day off a week kills any planning and absolutely destroyed any chance I could have to have a social life. I havent met anyone new in two years, co workers aside.

full time chef de partie here,
i run my kitchen most nights but still have a sou chef and head chef to rip me a new asshole as soon as something goes wrong,

cooking professionally is exhausting, the pay sucks and your hours are shit.
you work your ass off but when everything runs well its basically a drug. you become obsessed with it and soon enough you stop caring about the horrible hours, shit pay and hierarchy because you just want to make good food for people. that being said it can be really depressing, you meet a lot of drug addicts who hate there life because they've stopped loving there job and have realized they have wasted 10-30 years of there life.
something you should know?
don't be a chef.
how do i rate it?
9/10 love my job.

God I wish the places I work wasn't ghetto and had this. It was fucking built three years ago too, all brand new shit too. Fuckers that designed the kitchen were brain dead.

Those smokers are gonna be blacker than my soul after like three months. And all the better; the shittier the smoker looks, the better the meat tastes.

A 7 right now. Just changed jobs, cooking at two places now

>are you happy?
I very happy. A much better schedule than the previous place I worked. Closes at 9 so i get home rather early

>do you have time for activities apart from your job?
Yes, lots now. Bros and i get to play basketball and soccer on the weekends. Spend time with the family on the weekends, got back into karate 3 days a week, did a lot of work i needed to do on my cars for months

>something i should know about a living life as a chef?
It is not glamourous, its hard work. People will fuck up constantly and you will be yelling like a crazy person. Suppliers tend to be on time but you still spend way too much time on the phone. There is a lot of repition, mind numbing repition. You will end up washing up or some other form of cleaning every night to make sure everyone gets out at a reasonable time ...and inspecting to mak sure everything is clean enough and food is stored or disposed of properly. Your back and feet are.gonna take a pounding, get good shoes and a massage seat for your car.

Calling bullshit on 17 hour shifts.

I've been in the trade for 20 years, even our hardest working, most eager newbies don't clock those kind of hours. Hell, there's massive legal problems involved in such long shifts for a start. Even if you sign an agreement.
