Father is from Crete. He has a ton of purple figs there on his land, they're delicious fresh off the tree. We live in Northern Indiana and have a fig tree in our front yard. You can grow them in more places than you'd think.

My parents had some banana trees at their house and some local bums kept sneaking into the back yard and stealing all the bananas. My dad went out and chased after one of them with a broom and ran him off. A couple days later they woke up to find that someone had snuck out there during the night and chopped them all down with a machete and threw banana leaves and hacked up parts of banana trees all over the yard.
I thought it was pretty funny, but my parents were not amused.
