Pears you find in the supermarket generally have far, far less quality control than apples because they're way, way less popular.
Apples have a more consistent and overall higher quality.
A good pear is marginally better than a good apple, but it's fucking dicey and you're just as likely to wind up with mushy, mealy, metallicy piece of garbage as you are with something edible.
