You know what else is an avocado slicer? A knife.
>>
One: a potato peeler. Which might not even be considered a unitasker because you can peel pretty much any skinned vegetable with it.
>>
I'm thinking about getting rid of my frying pan. All it does is fry stuff over a stove. My saucepan can do the same thing, and is capable of also boiling things.

A garlic press. That's pretty much it. I don't get the hate about it. It's pretty useful when you make a lot of garlic dishes.
>>
>>7163311
It's wasteful.
>>
I've been purchasing cooking gear for well over a decade and haven't really thrown much away throughout the years.

I've also used the stupidly heavy Italian garlic press I bought for a dollar at a thrift store as a meat tenderizer on multiple occasions.

>how many unitaskers do you own

All I can say is that I don't currently own a fire extinguisher.
>>
>>7163311
I actually use a slap chop for whole heads of garlic. It's kind of like a poor-man's food processor.
>>
>>7163319
it's really not, you just loose the skin of the bulb which is not really good eats.
>>
>>7163324
But... a food processor is a poor man's food processor. Seriously, you can get a dinky little one that's 100 times more useful than a slap chop for 15 United States Dollars.
>>
>>7162418
Plenty.
But even most things that would be considered "unitaskers" can be used for other things.
>>
>>7163272
he also thinks he is talented and intelligent. poor guy has quite a few delusions.
>>
>>7163328
The garlic press cost resources to produce.
>>
>>7163355
I actually do have a small one, it's worse. The blades are too high (doesn't get the stuff on the bottom easily) and the sides need to be constantly scraped down. Slap chop is better, more convenient to load/unload (just drag it off the cutting board to fall into a bowl), and requires no cord.

Gonna get a new processor for Christmas, but I still highly recommend a hand-powered chopper.
>>
>>7163279
A knife can defend your house, it doesn't even need to cut things which ordinarily wouldnt be considerd food. Its a psychological tool that defends you from others who wish you harm.
>>
>>7163404

>>

>>
>>7162418
A few, maybe five or six. I have enough space in a single drawer for pretty much all of my "unitaskers" so I'm not really all that worried about it.
>>
>>7163479
>Its a psychological tool that defends you from others who wish you harm.
You know what else does that and can also save your life without having to get close to someone who wants to break into your home?

A pump action shotgun. They were designed to make that noise when you load a round into the chamber first, and then shoot stuff second. Any one who breaks into a place and hears that noise is going to take off running.
>>
Does a veggie peeler count as a unitasker?

I know how to do it with a knife, but I prefer using a peeler since it's way quicker.
>>
>>7163311
you can do that with a grater
>>
>>7162418
I own a grilled cheese maker, I use it a lot, but I wish it was bigger
>>
Is a potato peeler considered a unitasker? You can achieve the same result with a knife.

I think that might be the only thing I have which might be considered gimmicky.
>>
>>7164450
>warning an intruder of your presence

The fuck? If they're armed, then you're fucked.
>>
>>7164791
Unless they know they're going to be getting away with quite a fucking lot in valuables, or they're there to kill you, I doubt a home invader is going to stick around when they hear a shotgun being loaded. You sure as shit aren't going to do any better with a fucking knife going against someone like that.
>>
>>7164800
No, I mean, you don't know what the fuck they're going to do. Better to not warn them you're coming because in a worst case scenario, they would have the drop on you and shoot your ass. The best deterrence is pointing the shotgun at their face and yelling at them to get on the ground, not making noise and letting some possibly-armed robber get his barrel fixed on your entryway.
>>
>>7164816
>The best deterrence is pointing the shotgun at their face and yelling at them to get on the ground
Gotta cock that fucking gun at some point boy-o.
>>
>>7163220
you can also use it to gut baked potatoes if you find yourself in dire need of potato skins or guts but just can't seem to find a spoon.

my very first restaurant kitchen i ever cooked in had a similar item that we used for making baker skins and guts. it was quite faster than using an actual spoon or knife for high volume work because it allowed you to do half potatoes easily instead of quarters, which you could then stack 5 or 6 high and cut down to quarters with one stroke.

so it does have a decent corner-case use, much better than its intended purpose in actual fact.

I would say a gun is a unitasker. You use it to shoot things. Scaring people with the intention of shooting them doesn't really count as a secondary function.

Wash your hands.
Get three bowls.
Crack an egg into one.
Use your hand to scoop the yolk out of the bowl and into a separate bowl.
Pour the albumin from the bowl into the remaining bowl.
Repeat as necessary.

I use peelers to shave various veg into ribbons for use as salad veg or, best yet, for making brunoise much, much finer than I would be able to normally. Also, when my aunt or mum make noodle soups, they use the peeler to ribbon a daikon then slice the ribbons into very, very fine needles as a topping in the soup.
Also crisps/potato chips.

In case you break a yolk.
If even one speck of fat (yolk is made of fat) gets into the white, you can't whip the whites into foam.
If you crack your eggs into a third bowl before separating yolks and whites into separate bowls, if you break a yolk, you won't contaminate all the other whites. You can just beat the white and yolk for scrambled eggs and start again with a new bowl.

Boy, you guys are a bunch of no fun fags.

It's like you don't think efficiently and thereby don't live so.

My father in law has one and I fucking hate it because he thinks that it's an acceptable gluten free substitute for pasta. It isn't. It seems to work well enough but you're probably better off getting a kitchen aid attachment to do the same thing.

So it does the job?
How well do the vegetables hold up when they're boiled?
I'm not offended by the idea of eating them as a pasta replacement so I'd love to know more

I use mine as some sort of ghetto mandoline.

Your move, autismo.

How's it asking for trouble? The gun's not going to start shooting on its own. It's not like I have other people around to mess with it.

I only own unitaskers as their sole purpose is to do the job they were designed for which means they do it well.

A plane is designed to fly, not cook food with its engines or go alongthe motorway like a car, or be a hotel or a conference room, or a videogame cabinet. It could be all those things but if someone told you that the plane you were going to fly in had been used as a bus, or as an indoor playground for kids, or as a soup kitchen, would you trust said plane to perform to the ability you expect from such a contraption? I don't think so.

Not that poster-

It won't be like pasta in texture or taste. It will work the same way as a vehicle for sauce but that's about in. I've only ever tried it with zucchini. If you expect it to be it's own thing and not pasta at all then you'll like it just fine.

I have a cheese shaver or whatever it's called in English. All it does is slice thins slices of cheese, but it's the only good way to do it.

I guess you could use it as a peeler but probably wouldn't work as well.

mandolins aren't unsafe if you're super careful, people just treat them like they aren't fucking death traps if you use them recklessly

I just use a peeler when I have hard cheeses that I'm going to use in a dish.

This also works for softer cheeses though. Great to make cheese sandwhiches.
