Ausfag here.
is it true that kebab places arent really a thing in America? Or other countries?
>>
>>7085248
That's not a real kebab
>>
Kebabs are (unfortunately?) not a thing here in America. We have the best hamburgers so it's not so bad.
>>
Kebab is a thing in Europe, at least in the Netherlands and Germany it is.
>>
>>7085248
Us Amerifats have more Greek restaurant operators than Turks so we're more likely to drunk-order gyros at 2 in the morning than kebab. Same concept, but, slightly different seasoning and sauce.
>>

Burrito>kebab

It is true, the closest thing to kebab that most people in the US have access to is gyro made with pic related.

Not enough greeks here man
>>
US has gyros, canada has donairs, one is obviously greek, donairs are turkish and they are pretty much exactly the same thing as kebab, spiced meat cooked on a spindle, sliced off, put in a pita with some vegetables and hummus and with a sauce that's either tzatziki or a sweet sauce originating from nova scotia
>>
>>7085303
that nova scotian donair sauce is a fucking travesty
>>
>>7085307
I'm sorry you have shit taste m8, yeah it's made with condensed milk but it has an addicting garlicey taste that works perfect with the flavors of a donair. it's also a really good dipping suace
>>

Kebab and similar dishes are rather hard to come by here in LA, where cheap mexican and korean food has the market that kebab joints fill pretty full already. When you can find it, it's can be pretty hit and miss, both in terms of quality and price. In NYC however, I've found that, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a someone who's selling kebab, who will then ask you to stop swinging his ingredients around.
>>
>>7085303
there are differences between pita and kebap. pita is pork, kebap veal or beef. the sauce is different too. in pita is no red cabbage, lettuce etcetera. pita uses pita-bread, kebap in a flatbread or dürüm...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doner_kebab
>>
My town of 56k has 3 kebab places here in the US.
>>
>>7085317
pita is a kind of bread, what you mean is gyros
kebab just means roasted meat, it can be anything
red cabbage in doener is a northern euro thing, you'll never see that in turkey
>>
>kebab
Remove it
>>
>>7085248
Sad but true, even though we've had Christian sand people from Lebanon living here for decades.

Luckily it's not so hard to find a Greek place or a Lebanese restaurant, but we'll never have kebab pizza.

Poland here. 2/3 of fastfood places have kebab
>>
>>7085248

We have kebabs and burritos everywhere, and im not american, but spaniard.

Having kebabs can have a reason, as they are everywhere in the rest of yurop, but I dont know why Taco Bell´s company HQ thinks that tacos and burritos can be well selled in Spain...i mean, speak spanish does not convert me in mexican.
>>
>>7085927
>i mean, speak spanish does not convert me in mexican.

so? burritos are delicious no matter what language you speak (the quality of taco bell's food notwithstanding)
>>
>>7085927
>I dont know why Taco Bell´s company HQ thinks that tacos and burritos can be well selled in Spain

They seem to sell well everywhere. Just because the food is "foreign" to the country doesn't mean anything. Look at many places in Europe: Kebab/Doner is super popular in Germany, Netherlands, etc but has nothing to do with that country.
>>
The US has fucking everything

like literally everything
>>
>>7085248
There are kabab places everywhere. I live in Seoul and there are plenty.

Kebabs were also weirdly all over in Vietnam.
>>
>>7085307
Seriously. I used to live in east coast Canada, and they put it on everything including the pizza if you don't specifically ask otherwise. That sweet shit is disgusting.
>>
>>7085934

Yeah, but nobody have eaten burritos here before, and I bet that they can be selled well better in Japan, for example.

Spanish people usually doesnt like to eat new or foreign foods, so we dont have great or exclusive foods around here, because companies know that selling grape soda, or peanut butter oreos here would be a mistake
>>
>>7085946
>literally
No.
>>
>>7085962
no, I mean it by definition
>>
>>7085946
This. Also true of Canada.

There literally isn't a thing under the sun, in terms of food, you can't get just about everywhere. There's a market for absolutely everything, no matter how weird-obscure, because people immigrate there from everywhere.

Same isn't quite true in Europe, since immigration there doesn't pull from as many places.
>>
>>7085248
Depends on where in US. Northeast and Commifornia have kebab shops, but they aren't especially common relative to sub shops and whatnot
>>
In North America I think they're usually called gyros since they're normally thought of as greek not turkish. But they're the same thing essentially.
>>
Jesus Christ people we have them in the US. We just call them Gyros is that really so hard to understand?
>>
>>7086029

What I find hard to understand is people somehow thinking that a Gyro and a Doner Kebab are the same thing.

In Europe kebabs were popularized by Turkish immigrants. In the US we don't have so many Turkish immigrants, but we had a wave of Greeks that opened restaurants/diners/coffeeshops, particularly in the Northeast. So many Americans are familiar with gyros and souvlaki, which are just the Greek versions of kebabs. Also some parts of the country have decent populations of Middle Eastern immigrants (Lebanese, Palestinian and the like), making shawarama reasonably well known in places where falafel joints are common. (Remember NYC had falafel before it had McDonald's.)

So kebabs are regionally well represented in the US, but more often than not they are in Greek or Middle Eastern form instead of Turkish, though we do have a few Turkish joints.

>>

I was gonna mention that. In philly and western /central NJ we have gyros all over the place.

If you go to a page specifically calling it "Kabob" it will be Pakistani spiced chunks of meat that were cooked in a tandoori oven on a skewer.

I have not seen/heard the word "doner" except for in obscure shop in the city.
>>

kebab is rare in the U.S. we don't have a significant enough greek/turkish population to have made it made it widespread/mainstream like in Europe and Oz. I mean, you can find kebab in major cities, usually, but you have to go out of your way to look for it, and it's usually not very good.

Our drunk food of choice is Mexican or burgers. You guys don't really have Mexican cuisine so it balances out.

>>

It may not be rare in one specific location where you are, that doesn't mean it's not rare across the vast majority of the rest of the country.

The only areas you'll find a number of kebab places like that are those with a high concentration of greek/turkish/middle eastern populations.

If you're in a town/city with no middle eastern/greek immigrants, then you won't have kebab there -- and that's a lot of areas in the U.S. You seem to have a healthy population of M.E./Greeks and therefore have lots of kebab, you shouldn't assume it's like that for everyone else.

You're confusing skinheads (nationalists) with "Sportswear-men", aka "Soccer fans".

They have bald heads too, but no pretense of a political agenda of any kind, just a favorite soccer team, which creates a kind of tribal structures with alliances and wars. They like a good fight, they will mug you without blinking and they don't discriminate, Turkish, Japanese, American, Polish, everyone gets a good whooping.

The appearance similarity to Skinheads is mostly accidental.

I'm in Brazil. Kebab has been a "thing"here for the last 5 years, at most.
In some Lebanese migrant (mostly São Paulo) areas it has been commonly sold for the better part of the 20th century.

Whereas for the rest of the country, it's been a thing since Lybian and Syrian refugees started coming.

I like it, it's basically a lighter version of our hamburguers (commonly known here as x-salada [something like cheese-salad - pic related]).
>>

???

Our homegrown beef is mostly terrible in Germany. It's getting a bit better because eating steaks has become more of a thing but it used to be only roasts and stews and similar long cooking time dishes that were made with beef here. So there was no real value placed on quality cuts.

USA has much more of a meat culture than Germany. That being said, I mostly buy beef that's imported from Urugay, it's not too expensive but very tasty. Maybe you had imported beef in a German steakhouse?
