Kebab and similar dishes are rather hard to come by here in LA, where cheap mexican and korean food has the market that kebab joints fill pretty full already. When you can find it, it's can be pretty hit and miss, both in terms of quality and price. In NYC however, I've found that, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a someone who's selling kebab, who will then ask you to stop swinging his ingredients around.

They seem to sell well everywhere. Just because the food is "foreign" to the country doesn't mean anything. Look at many places in Europe: Kebab/Doner is super popular in Germany, Netherlands, etc but has nothing to do with that country.

In Europe kebabs were popularized by Turkish immigrants. In the US we don't have so many Turkish immigrants, but we had a wave of Greeks that opened restaurants/diners/coffeeshops, particularly in the Northeast. So many Americans are familiar with gyros and souvlaki, which are just the Greek versions of kebabs. Also some parts of the country have decent populations of Middle Eastern immigrants (Lebanese, Palestinian and the like), making shawarama reasonably well known in places where falafel joints are common. (Remember NYC had falafel before it had McDonald's.)
So kebabs are regionally well represented in the US, but more often than not they are in Greek or Middle Eastern form instead of Turkish, though we do have a few Turkish joints.

I'm in Brazil. Kebab has been a "thing"here for the last 5 years, at most.
In some Lebanese migrant (mostly São Paulo) areas it has been commonly sold for the better part of the 20th century.
Whereas for the rest of the country, it's been a thing since Lybian and Syrian refugees started coming.

Our homegrown beef is mostly terrible in Germany. It's getting a bit better because eating steaks has become more of a thing but it used to be only roasts and stews and similar long cooking time dishes that were made with beef here. So there was no real value placed on quality cuts.
USA has much more of a meat culture than Germany. That being said, I mostly buy beef that's imported from Urugay, it's not too expensive but very tasty. Maybe you had imported beef in a German steakhouse?
