I work at a haunted house in october managing actors and acting in it myself. This year I sprung for those white out contacts, they were a bitch to work in some nights but I had fun.
I was wearing my costume one afternoon, had gotten into make up early since we were doing a process that usually takes for ever so I decided to get it out of the way before every one else showed up for work. Realized I left some stuff in the car I need but the parking lot was like three blocks away.
Decided to fuck it and just walk there anyways, be damned who saw me.
Walking back with my shit a pedestrian on the other side of the street (who cant see most of my face yet) yells "HEY HALLOWEEN IS NEXT MONTH"
I turn to face him, but before I can respond he just screams like hell. It was some what satisfying.
Customers were always seriously freaked out by the eyes though. My favorites were "Are those your actual eyes?!" and "How do you even see?" to which I'd respond "I dont, I smell fear."

I dont mind taking pictures with people out of costume/lolita, but I really can't stand normal people most of the time, especially tourists. A lot of times they just want to take pictures with weird people in costume and if they dont speak english its really hard to get them to understand no.

Yeah, I think that would be fine. If she's been in the fashion for any decent amount of time she would probably be more used to people asking to take pictures of her, not with her, but if I was in lolita I wouldnt be offended by someone asking me that. Just make sure that nothing on you is going to get on her dress (if you were holding a water bottle, a drink, some food, etc). Don't walk up to her with a plate of food and then hand it off to your friend before taking a picture, your hands could still be dirty.

This is pretty OT so sage, but I think it's pretty clear through the books that no, the wizarding way isn't superior, the wizarding community face a lot of similar problems to any other community and they're not really better at dealing with it either, so while I see that it can be read that way I still think that it's more apt as a term.

I will say, it seems like at least newspaper journalists are decent, or in my experience they've been pretty decent. News anchors are just looking for things to sensationalize for good TV. You can make fun of people through paper, sure, but most local papers worth their salt don't have time to waste on trying to make fun of cosplayers as opposed to just reporting on a local event that happened.
The only decent news station I've seen is whatever local Hartford news channel that goes to Connecticon. I think they're there every year? Or at least they are a lot, maybe I'm wrong but the last time I saw one of their news stories it was pretty respectful, they asked questions about people's costumes and showcased some cool/fun stuff and seemed to get a kick out of everything.
I cosplayed Sadness from Inside Out at a local con and while there were lots of really cute kids getting excited and even a few adults there was one kid in particular that made me feel absolutely terrible.

A few years back on my local cosplay comm page a bunch of Homestucks were arranging a gathering at a small town carnival event and I made the mistake of asking them to reconsider. This wasn't really a carney carnival the only "ride" was one if those bouncy slides and the rest is games and booths run by townsfolk groups. The Hamsteaks started to tear me up for my ignorance and censorship or whatever. until one of my friends who earned major respect for his Gamzee came forward to tell them to calm the fuck down and that it wasn't really the best place for a HS gqthering. Not that any place besides a con or private event is.

Honestly my dream is to own a cottage/cabin in a temperate place (NW USA, England, NZ, etc. ) with some alpaca, a relaxed job that I feel happy and passionate about, the wardrobe and confidence to wear what I want (mori, lolita, otome looks) every day, a cute blonde pomeranian named Purin, and a BMW Isetta by 30. A nice bike, a garden, and some cooking classes would be nice, but they're just extra.

Another time with the same friend, a middle-aged woman came rushing up all excited and asked for a pic. Turns out her 14 year old stepdaughter was into lolita, and the woman had just bought her her first dress from bodyline for a birthday present, it was really sweet how excited she was.
So, today and tomorrow is ToraCon at RIT in Rochester, and I putz around as the Lone Wanderer from Fallout because I don't watch any Chinese cartoons.
It's interesting whenever I see a mom or dad with their son or daughter. The dad sometimes is wearing a football sweatshirt (normally the Bills) and some type of Bass Pro Shop hat as they follow their under aged kid around that's wearing some sort of anime outfit, with pink hair or whatever.
They look dead inside, they don't want to be there, they have no idea what anything is, but they do it for their children because they love them, and even if they don't quite understand their interests, will support it none the less.
To me, they are the real MVPs of these conventions.
Now, tour groups that wind up seeing the convention and go into faces saying, "wtf I don't even," those are funny to watch as the tour guide tries to explain.
