Let's be weebs and dance together, /cgl/! Post odottemita covers, group covers, performances, cringes, and more!
>>
Remember Yukapon? Her old videos make me cry with embarassment but she's actually pretty hot now and she's living the weeb dream in Japan, she still acts like an annoying kawaii baby though.
http://youtu.be/IjfWLnlSKVA
>>
>>8746505
Careful anon, mods don't like it when yukapee is mentioned.

A good majority of net idols have actually gone to Japan and live the aidoru dream in some way. Secretly salty, but i can live on.
>>
I love this dance but I feel like it's just doomed for bad covers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXiqo1R6oYM
>>
When will people start dressing decently in their dance videos? It peeves me so hard when someone covers a dance and their outfit looks like shit or they threw on every kawaii thing they own. Does anyone else hate this?

>>
>>8746570
Accurate but kinda boring. I like seeing personality in dancing.
>>
>>8746588
Well it is hard to see their faces with those seizure warning lights
>>
>>8746546
Depends on what you want to go for. If the person intends on it being a ~aidoru~ performance, then yeah they should dress up completely and have stage presence. I didn't, and as long as they're good, it doesn't matter.
>>
>>8746546
To be fair, she was just dancing to pass the time in line at an event (according to the description)
it's actually always worried me whether they got her permission to post this considering her top keeps falling down... I'd probably ask them not to personally.
>>
>>8746546
Given the context of the video, I don't mind. But I do think dancers who do covers should be presentable in their videos (this also goes for clean background with no distractions) Just clothing that matches can go far and can improve the quality of a video.
>>
Has anyone heard from any net idol groups recently? Has it finally died?

Hitode Army is a finnish group I really like. I'm a bit biased though because I'm finnish and I've seen them perform live a few times.
>>
>>8747736
Furi Frui has been updating Facebook and posting performance announcements but their quality in performances (both singing and dancing) and appearances hasn't change since their "debut"
>>
How do people even start these kinds of things? and why are they all the same? Are their any with an interesting gimmick?
>>
>>8747741
Did you get introduced to idols through Love Live or something where their fans are almost entirely high school girls? It's all lies, many girls like idols but the fans are mostly awkward dudes. Otherwise the "purity" of idols wouldn't be such an issue.
>>
>>8747818
There are many different ways how a dance group gets started. Majority of the time its a group of friends and if more members are needed, then they will look into a audition process. Then a shit load of practicing is taken place and everything goes on from there.

Some gimmicks I want to use personally is handshake events and checkis (polaroid photos) with fans. Other ways of gimmicks are maid cafes, surprise hallway performances, or prizes if you find members at cons or events or during performances.
>>
Is babymetal technically one of these groups? Sorry newb here.
>>
>>8747845
Babymetal is an actual idol group. /jp/ has a Babymetal and Sakura Gakuin thread if you want to find more content
>>
>>8747807
Holy shit I love them. How popular are they over there?
>>
>>8747829
If you want a good idol and that somewhat represents the idol industry, Wake Up Girls and AKB0048 are good recommendations.
>>
>>8747811
I actually saw them in concert before. There really going down hill with their dance quality.. Even then, the cons I've seen them at only let them perform one or two songs. I don't blame them in that decision. Their cringy fake ~aidoru~ personas are cringy.

It just depends on the dedication of the group
>>
>>8748597
Well according to my dedication to the art or any alternative sport I've seen people break bones and injuries through dedicated practice. All these idols just want to be kawaii.
>>
>>8748605
You see broken bones because majority of these people don't have any former background in dance or don't do simple stretches that can prevent any accidents.

Odottemita is litterally just people dancing around either wanting to be cute or do it for the hell of it. The wanna-be idols are cringy, but some are here for fun
>>
>>8748615
>you get broken bone in basket ball because you don't have a background in basket ball

I really love Aoi. Seeing his covers are always entertaining - same with Ririri. He's as cute as her and puts a lot of effort into his dancing so maybe thats it. Some of the comments on the videos he is in though...jesus.

>>
>>8748681
I believe so anon. Lolita dresses are sometimes used in covers

https://youtu.be/j2-OgfPJr-4
>>
>>8748655
Well maybe the ameture weebs should have more dedication so they don't look so cringy. That's the whole point of our conversation anyways.
>>
>>8748752
Anon do you not see what you typed?
>doesn't see quality in dance groups
>quality of dance in a group is based on practice and dedication
>says that dedication can lead to broken bones
>compares ameture weebs to college basketball players
>they wouldnt be cringy ametures if they had dedication

I'm very confused anon. The whole point is to show that quality comes when you practice and are dedicated. That's what a majority of these dance groups lack. It differs from group to group however. There are groups like >>8747807 who do have that dedication and practice time then there's >>8746522 where they learn stuff last minute a week or even days before and it looks shitty.
>>
>>8748767
You asked for my definition of dedicated practice and I replied with blood, sweat, and tears.
You replied with "oh it doesn't matter."
>>
>>8748767
At one point you even victim blamed and insulted all injurers as amateurs.
>>
>>8748776
None asked for your definition anon. I only answered your statement of not seeing any practice by saying "it depends on the dedication of the group" because it does. Not all groups are the same weebs trying to dance. Some are more dedicated than others and if you looked at a few more videos than the ones posted on here, pretty sure you would see it too.

If you definetly give me a source to where I said "anon what's your defintion of dedicated practice", id really love to see it

Pretty popular I guess? They performed at almost every major con this year and they're obviously the best group here. I'm sort of new to the whole scene so I might be wrong though.
I think they're on a hiatus now though as one of the members is in japan for her debut there.
The two sisters of the group, Noora and Petra, also have their own channel https://youtu.be/sokkkN-e7Yk
>>
>>8747811

>>
>>8748328
interesting you'd say that, seeing as they have only ever performed once and did a 30 minute set with a bunch of dances, its up on their channel, the only other convention they danced at was at a talent show, which of course they would only be allowed one dance..

Surprised no one posted Kaduki yet (or maybe they did and I'm blind).
She's 7 now I think, she's been making videos since she was 4. Her mom makes her all of her cosplays, and she's bloody adorable. She doesn't sing or dance very well but it's ok because she's obviously just a little kid having a blast doing what she loves. Her videos make me smile like an idiot every time.
Her mom is a pretty good seamstress too, her costumes are always very cute and well made.

they're amazing!

>>8748938

>>
>>8748936
I really love them. This dance is so all over the place so it's super easy to make it look horrible and they did amazing. They're outfits are fucking adorable, too.

I follow Noora and Petra (I think they're related?) on Instagram and they dress Himekaji and always look adorable.
>>
>>8748501
Most of the original girls have grown up and moved on, though. At least Peach and Lime are still around, they've always been the best dancers.
>>
When Meltia started I noticed people in our lolita community seemed interested in idol dances, so I tried to start up a group. Not as easy as you fucking think.
I didn't ask for dance experience but I did ask for motivation. I still had to practically drag people along to practice, even though it was only once every few weeks. The first three times about 6 out of 9 showed up (yes we did LL covers, among other things). Fourth time some unfortunate circumstances came together and only ONE other girl showed up. We still had to pay the rent for the practice space, of course. I was just so pissed that I called it quits after that.
We had the chance to perform at pretty big con and everything. Just... no one was motivated. Still mad. I just wanted to have fun dancing, I didn't even care that half of them sucked.
I was extra salty when I went to the con we could've performed at and there was a pretty great LL cover group performing one of my favourite dances. That could've been us, but they playin.

TL;DR only set up a dance group with people you know and are motivated.

>>8748936
Oh shit they're amazing!

I really like that last one, it's refreshing to have guys, and even just a mixed group, plus I like the casualness of their outfits.

My biggest complaint with western groups is that a lot of the girls seem so lanky and awkward with their bodies? Even if the dance is good they seem to hunch so much for some reason and it makes them look like they have scoliosis or something. >>8748936 look at the girl with the dark hair, it's like she's trying to hide her neck or something and it looks so weird.
>>

None of these girls are good besides the light pink twin tails and the bright blue. If the purple asian girl would slow the fuck down and not try to upstage the other girls, the whole thing wouldve at least had one person in front at all times who had an idea of what was going on.

Any advice for someone who wants to start filming dance covers? I know a few dances, so I'm not a total beginner or anything. But even though I practice in front of a mirror, I feel like I still look really clumsy on the occasions I've tried recording myself in the past.
>>
>>8749477
Why do you want to start uploading dances?
>>
>>8749477
Keep plenty of distance between yourself and the camera. Filming from up close looks weird and distorted. Keep the camera lower than eye level (chest or waist-level is good I guess).
An important part if you're recording is that you're not just going through the moves, you're performing, so expression is important too. Exaggerate this more than you think you should. It doesn't show up that big on screen, after all.
Apart from that, it just takes time to get used to the camera. Practice it a bunch of times. I'm sure it will get better the more you try it!
(I hate seeing myself on camera too, as much as I love dancing.)

>>
>>8749380
They aren't bad dancers at all, most of the cringe comes from their hair. If they wore normal LL cosplay and wigs, this would be pretty cool.
>>
>>8749484
I just think it'd be fun, honestly. I went through a try-hard net aidoru phase when I was like 15, and now that I've matured I just think it'd be a cool way to meet some new people, stay (at least somewhat) active, things like that. Plus, I feel like being comfortable on camera would help increase my confidence since I'm not great with it in general and it really shows in cosplay photos and the like.

>>8749584
Thanks for the advice! I'll definitely try to practice on camera a lot more and work on the things you mentioned!

The fat chick really doesn't try at all. She's giving like no effort. I don't know if its because she is winded because she has no stamina and her lung capacity for dancing is terrible, or if she is just horrible in general. I'm going for the latter.

Odo-related YT tips:
>choose popular songs over popular dances
>make friends with vocaloid producers or other artists for easy, non-competitive shares
>it's better to get promoted by non-dancers
>choose songs that are hard for beginners to learn, either because there's no front-facing camera or there are gaps in choreo (fill them in yourself)
>good camera and a SIMPLE background are best. your body should be the main subject
>once you get mildly popular, host contests
>do requests
>specialize in teaching and tutorials if you don't want a creepy dude fan majority. dress less "kawaii" and wear more "practice wear"

And most importantly
>you don't have to be good, you just have to be better than everyone else

With love live dances especially it's a bad idea to do solo covers by just mashing together the moves of whoever's singing the lead vocal at that moment, because those parts are always less intense than the background to allow the girls to actually sing. It would have been a lot better to do Kotori's part including her background dancing.

That being said, I guess it's possible to make something like that cute, but you have to be a lot sharper in your movements to make it work.

>>
>>8751555
selfpost or not she's good!
>>
>>8752633
There's always still room for improvement. It's obvious she's had some forms of dance training. Most of the girls on YouTube haven't. I'd like her to work on her expressions. It's the main thing that separates good from great here.
Certainly there's potential, but all this self-posting leaves such a sour taste that I probably won't bother following her channel

I got really lit a couple nights ago and was rewatching Haruhi Suzumiya with my old weeb mates. it's been 9 years but we all still knew it

broken nose, lost pair of glasses, two faceplants
>>
What were dancing gulls like when they first discovered odottemita? Did you quickly started uploading covers without overthinking them? What dances were popular when you first began?
>>
I love watching dance videos but its usually disappointing. A lot of the time you have girls who learn a routine but never learned to dance. Groups are worse because there is poor coordination and no one to normalize their moves so you end up with people moving quicker than others and others kicking to high, etc.
>>

>himezawa
I started laughing before I even clicked the link.
>>
>>8754217
I feel you anon. It also bugs me when dancers have potential to get better but they refuse to take any dance lessons to help improve. I think groups would have more quality if they were dedicated and practiced more and not in it just to be kawai aidoru uguu desu
>>
>>8748479
In her defense, very few odorite do Kozue's dances justice

>>8749081
Anon, I feel your pain on such a real level. Everyone always says they want to form a dance group until they have to actually practice or be motivated.

>>8749477
What >>8749584 said, make sure you're centered on the camera, your whole body is visible, and you're in a clean, well-lit area: the environment where you're dancing makes all the difference for how your dancing looks.

>>8751466
Me too, anon; I considered doing some cosplay cover dances of songs like S(mile)ing or Star, but haven't gotten around to it
>>
>>8748465
i dont think these two are that bad of dancers, but the way they did this and the things they added in arent good
>>
>>8748625
he still is.
Aoi has also really improved over the years; at the end of his Patchwork Staccato cover with K'suke they redid a part of a dance they did three years prior
>>
>>8756024
well none really said they were bad, anon. However, their added dance moves that look a lot like something you would see in cheerleading aren’t appealing at all.
>>
>>8754175
I didn't know odottemita was a thing when I first started.
I liked project diva dances, and most (...all) of the dance covers were pretty bad, so I borrowed a camera and learned a dance (Double Lariat) the next day.
People liked it and requested other covers, so I did those.
I actually aimed for unpopular songs since there's less reference material for those, and it helped other dancers out who needed front-facing camera/mirror versions.
No overthinking at all, but I didn't aim for kawaii performances, just supplying good reference material.
>>
>>8748523
She's so bad.. :/ What is is with Western dancers and moving their bodies so awkwardly. And her body is not helping her at all.
>>
>>8753300
Anon i feel you. I have those nights where i just go back to every weeb dance i did when i was 12. Its so hilarious and nostalgic.
>>
>>8757183
It's not because their western. Most of the nico dancers that end up on youtube end up on youtube for being good. Many of the western girls haven't had formal dance training, and even if they had most of them haven't had the level that we as views have our standards set to. There are tons of western girls that can dance, but, unless they're into Japanese stuff, have no desire to dance to weeb stuff on the internet.

Basically a girl goes online, finds nothing but amazing covers thanks to the not so good ones never making it to youtube, and then underestimates the work it takes. But hey, everyone's gotta start somewhere.
>>
>>8757583
This. People need to understand that the majority of odottemita dances from outside of Japan don’t have form of training and if they do, they don’t want to be a huge weeb on the internet. I'm pretty sure if they even start taking community center dance lessons, you probably will see improvement.
>>
>>8757670
I keep telling people to do basic dance exercise to build a foundation but most of the people in these threads have the mind set of "I don't care I just want to have fun."
>>
>>8757583
Even some of the nico dancers are worse than they seem at first glance. They're cute and peppy and thin and energetic, so unless you're looking for it you don't notice how wobbly they are. A lot of them don't have formal dance training either, they just hide it better.

I don't know how to feel about this. Everything about them is bad.
>>
>>8778139
Why? Their movements are pretty sharp and while their dance skills are on a slightly different levels the dance still worked. And most important thing: They actually performed and not just danced through a choreography. I'm not saying they were super over-the-top good but saying that "everything about them is bad" is just baseless. Or am I missing something?
>>
>>8778604

I agree, I've seen worse. They kept time well and they had a fair amount of body control (I half expected them to fall off time during the repeated kicks and was surprised when they kept in sync). It's about what I would expect out of an amateur group that put in some effort.

Cringe because there dancing to vocaloid music at a school's multicultural fair while wearing a wa-lolita outfit. Otherwise, the dancing is decent and nothing to cringe about. I might recommend not taking such big steps, but it's ok.

>>
>>8785360
>japanese and anime club both in a multicultural fair
If you already have a performance showcasing Japanese culture, for what purpose does an anime club even serve there?
>>
Any odorite here, what do you use for recording? Do you just use your laptop or do you have a camcorder set up?
>>
>>8785596
Persoanlly, I had to use my phone this past summer due to forgetting my camera and I was impressed with the quality. Majority of the time I use a decent quality camcorder, but I'm thinking about switching over to my phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 4.

I wouldn't recommend using a pre-installed laptop webcam. They usually have low quality and can't capture all the movement. Plus it's annoying to take your laptop everywhere and run the risk of running out of battery during different takes.

The best way to go is a camcorder and tripod. It may take some time to adjust to so you can get your whole body into the shot, but it's worth it in the end.
>>
>>8785596

You can get a tripod and a cheap point and shoot camera for about $50 on Amazon. You can spend more to get a better camera but for something like this it isn't really necessary. A more expensive point and shoot camera will have a better sensor for low-light conditions, optical zoom and anti-shake. However since you will probably be shooting in the daytime, and your camera will be in a fixed position with a tripod it isn't as necessary. Mark off your starting position and the camera with tape or chalk then do a test video. Adjust the positions until you're satisfied.

It's also useful to get one that takes batteries instead of a removable or fixed rechargeable battery pack. It may cost a little bit but AA/AAA are relatively cheap, easy to carry, and if you run out of power it only takes a few seconds to swap.
>>
>>8785377
There are a few jumps in the song yes. I did try again, this time following the tip and warming up more, and I still get pain.
>>
>>8785333

Apricot*, Wata and Yakko are my favorite Jdancers. I'm in love with their energy and natural smiles. Their videos cheer me up!

Does anyone know the name of a petite Jdancer who had very elegant moves prob. inspired by ballet or modern dance? She wore glasses like pic related in all of her videos, but I can't find her youtube channel anymore.

The two girls Atsu and Asupon live in NYC and try to force their way into any idol/anime related event to promote their group. They get rejected most of the time cause of the quality in dance and.. pretty sure because of how they look.

Considering putting a bunch of these dances together and doing them as a 45 minute workout
>>
>>8788637
'Sup Jamie?
>>
>>8788781
Dancing as a workout only works if you aren't already in the process of learning, since pausing to go back and learn the next steps make sessions deceptively long.
This is mostly for anyone else who's thinking the same thing, but consider loading up a playlist of Just Dance videos instead, since the dances have high movement and you learn them instantly. There are j-pop and k-pop versions, and probably other games.
Most people who use dance as a way of working out often cheat themselves with how much movement they're actually doing. It's why Zumba is popular. So just be careful about that.

we do it not for "efame" or anything. we do it for fun and because we love the music, love dancing and are a tight knit group of friends that all came together by our love of those things. thats why we do it. since "taiki bansei"was recorded (months ago, our mixer got really busy) we've had changes to the group and such, with emmy leaving and cracking down harder on getting things learned in time and correctly. hope that answers your question. :)

Its fine that you do not require your dancers to buy special clothing, but you should really look into coordinating what you have for all members.
