Cosplay photographer here; I'm heading to a few conventions over the next few months and I'm looking for inspiration. My work has felt stale lately, and I'm not becoming as popular as I want to be. I want to know what photos cosplayers admire most.
Only the best go here!

I love Pandanime's work. Very clean and beautiful. He has a little bit of a thing for Dutch angles though, I see. :(
>>8726089
I could post his stuff all day. If he scaled back his "over-processed" look, he'd be perfect.
>>8726089
Nope. The photoshop on the face and hair is horrible.
I never got what cgl looks for in a good cosplay photographer desu.
People get mad when an amateur doesn't photoshop enough and then are super salty over popular photographers who photoshop 'too much'.
Scene reenactment or action shots are far more interesting than glamour shots
>>8726138
>when desu automatically turns into desu
What.
>>8726141
I've noticed that. I'm working on getting those into my shots more. But at conventions, it's sometimes tough to do that, due to the impromptu nature of the work. In studio it's easier, or if you have time to scout locations beforehand.
Honestly, I do like a good glamour shot though, because I'm a male, and I love a pretty female. If it's done well, then it's done well.
SELF POST THREAD YAAAAAAY

There was a really good article that got passed around on facebook for taking dramatic hall photos, or making the best out of what you'll generally get to work with in hall photos, actually.
Pic is one of my favorites, will post another after because digimon always needs more quality love.
>>8726190
Actually just kidding found a AoT one first. Whatever.
I'm not huge into glamour shots, personally; part of it is doubtless because I'm a dude, but part of it is that I just like well composed/appropriate settings more than I like..well, glamour photos.
>>8726190
I saw that article, and didn't think much of it. There were some pretty shots in there, but most of the actual tips were pretty basic: I think the last one was, "have fun". Like, wat?
That pic you posted is really good though. Did you shoot that?
>>8726187
OP here. you can self-post, but only if your work is good. If it's not good, you're going to get ridiculed till you take your camera to the pawn shop.
>>8726198
Oh. Well, that's disappointing. I really liked some of the other articles I've seen on photog stuff (ie the "how to use perspective to make fucking magic", etc ones) so I hoped that one would be as good, but maybe not.
And nah, I didn't shoot that; I don't shoot anything, hue, I direct a photog friend of mine when we buddy up, but he's the one actually taking the shots. Cosplayer is some Brazillian dude. I follow his page, I think I've seen maybe like, 3-4 pictures ever, but it's fantastic shit.

Pic not related

Over processing g the fact looking like a porcelain doll. There are those who dig this while I'm like meh. Everything else I dig it
Bright, dynamic photos
I like it when it when cosplayers have an expression suitable for their character, and when the background suits the source material.

This is why no one takes you all seriously. I wouldn't want to do business with such a shitty drama-filled community either.
>>8729032
The ones that appreciate photographers won't be here, and I heard people are hiding their favorite photographers so other people won't steal them.
>>8729143
That's why I'm not posting mine, I love my photographer. He always does amazing work
Plus, it'll turn into a barrage of 'self post' stuff
Nothing mega over the top, but Tom Good is hands down my favorite photographer, this is from a shoot I did with him. I did my first photoshoot with him, and he was great to work with.
He's super friendly and gets photos out quickly. I think I had these photos before con even ended?
>>8729143
>>8729145
Do you honestly think, in the age of Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, that no one is going to find out about "your favorite photographer"?
Please be serious. If he was that good, as soon as he posted a photo, people woukd be on him. I'm sure he doesn't want to shoot you exclusively his whole career.
>>8729629
If they're good they will get the work regardless. People don't tend to post their fav tog because, they will either get torn a new one for no reason and as mentioned get booked up fast etc.
>>8729629
>>8730135
I have all my clients plug me, some multiple times. But I get most of my new business just through posting my work. People remark on how pretty it is, and ask me if I'm available for such-and-such con.
If it's someplace I've never been before, or it;s far, I start advertising, and use my bookings to pay for the trip.
>>8729154
Oh my god just go away already. There's nothing special about that photo, you were just looking for a reason to self post.
>>8726156
But I mean if you set up a day outside of a con for a photoshoot, and you have any amazing location or one that just suits the character(s) well, go and take action shots!
>>8726156
And here's an example of scene reenactment on the convention floor

These look like snapshots. There has to be more in terms of retouching, staging, and bringing some sort of feeling out of the photo.

gross.

all that shoop and they didn't even fix the wig baka
>>8726078
I have a same problem from time to time. Try looking at magazines, it`s great for inspiration if you want to do glamour.
Also, there same ofcosplay shots I like

I know it's a figure, but like... it's still legit.
I really like the idea to recreate the splash arts.
>>8741658
'Mom' is a new form of endearment girls and guys give girls they like. I...Don't understand it. Its really fucking creepy to me.
>>8737044
this is honestly a bad photo
this is the kind of shot you have in the middle of all your good shots because you were firing away while they were dancing
>>8727537
>an expression suitable for their character
This. A lot of the photos in this thread fall flat for me because cosplayers constantly do the "glamour shot" facial expression.
>>8735655
This for example, kek. Can you imagine how cool this pic would be if she were tearing up a little? Cut some onion in front of her face and see how much more of an impact it would have. It would make you feel.
Because right now she's like "Oh, look...a bird."
>>8745428
One of my favorite photos... so haunting...
hi

Hard to choose a single pic, their photosets go more as a whole. But the angles, the dynamics, the colors, the roleplay, everything is just so good in all of their work.
>>8729032
people in all walks prefer to talk about negatives and warn people than praise

OP here; Super processed shots like this can work sometimes, but not if it's done like this... I don't know what the purpose of the flares is. Honestly it just looks like the lens in smudged or scratched. :\
This is what discourages me about cosplay work. Everyone thinks that a photo isn't "good" unless it looks busy, like this one.
Sometimes a good smile taken at a nice angle is all it takes for me to love a photo.

Stop posting your fap fodder. Go post in the sexy girls thread, this thread is for particularly good modeling and photography, not just hot bitches.
While we post about what makes our favorite photos, mine is always having an appropriate location for the character. Most photogs can get passable hallway shots but it takes actual dedication to go somewhere appropriate for the characters and do a shoot there. Bonus points for characters actually interacting with things in the environment and not just doing hallway poses in a different location.
>>8746756
I hope those feathers are photoshopped
and if theyre not, they picked them all up after they finished.
>>8750397
Actually >>8750495 is right. This pic doens't have so much post-process : basic LR development, some color adjustments and probably a bit of skin smoothing on her face. You shouldn't be feared of color post process, as even a beginner can do great things if the pic itself is already great.
But anyway, you just need to develop your style.
As cosplayers aren't photographers, they will often prefer something very busy and shiny but quite bad over a good "simple" shot. So you can get very good at simple things, but that'll be harder.
I was posting updaterequired cuz they often do a pretty good job keeping the balance between simple, clean, original composition and business in the shot.
