The brown works because she has brown in other places whereas Hanayo's gloves seem really random because there's no brown elsewhere except for the bow on her capelet.
I'm assuming they did layers of prints in an attempt to make the dress more visually interesting without having to draw texture, but it just made the dresses really fugly and mismatched.

I prefer to sew my own costumes, but when it comes to love live I run into the problem that almost all of the outfits I like have detailed scallop edging. I don't have access to a laser cutter is there any other way to recreate this look without substituting the scallopes with lace or actually sewing each scallop because I think I might go crazy if I had to.

So I'm starting to plan for Anime Next and I want to cosplay pic related (and a few more Kotori cards, still debating). The thing is my skin tone is tan and I'll personally feel uncomfortable with a wig that light colored and I already feel kind of weird cosplaying a pale character. I'd prefer using a wig that's my hair color (dark brown) and style it the same way but I'm not sure if it'd look weird. These are for nozomi+eri. The material is kinda velveteen? its kinda soft and the inside is lined with a furry sort of material. They're quite warm to wear really nice for cold weather.
The details im guessing are just pleather and the heels/sole are quite sturdy/heavy not like those light as fuck cheap cardboard tb shoes. As for how durable it is I'm not 100% sure since I've only worn these for trials and a single day for a con.
The back has some elastic so have fat thighs they stretch a little.Calves just fit and they're a tiny bit hard to walk in due to the obstruction at the knees but mainly because they're thigh night boots.
main problem was the zips catching onto each other, which wasnt a massive deal but can be a bit annoying.
How many people actually make these costumes? And I'm not talking pieces, the whole thing? I almost never buy cosplays or cosplay pieces and I would feel weird wearing an elaborate costume I didn't make but most of these designs are way crazy and custom everything (prints, trims, etc.)

Personally where I come from fabric is expensive and the range is small (unless you're willing to travel to further places for it) and that means buying a costume is generally cheaper than making one, mainly of you don't really have the skills to do the elaborate ones.
There's a lot of unique trims and prints for most sets which, to make on your own/custom print/etc, would be even more costly so I don't feel crap buying costumes.
In the end it's up to you, if you feel like shit buying something just make it, no point cosplaying if you're going to feel horrible about it

Currently, locally, Kotori and Nico were number one, then Nozomi (aka boobers) skyrocketed in popularity. Then Maki kinda came out of nowhere and I think she is polled as the most popular in the US at large.
I did the first test of the laser cut Love Live lace (left) on some crappy scrap fabric but I still like the outcome. I fixed up the file and I can make it available to download in PDF, .ai and rhino if you seagulls would like.

How are you supposed to stop horsehair braid from collapsing? Every time I've used it I have to physically position the skirt and pray to god I dont move to fast so that the horsehair braid doesn't lose shape

Not sure what specifics you want but here's the general run down for what we did so far
Main body
-4 way stretch fabric, pattern out a general strapless top with side zipper
-black iron on bias tape for the stripes, and sew it down
Skirt
-same fabric, circle skirt pattern with the waist 1.5 or 2x larger than the bottom of your top
-white bias tape for the bottom
-satin fabric for the shatters, using fusible web and applique methods to place on the skirt
-horsehair braid on the bottom of the skirt
-pleat the skirt and attach to the bottom of the top
Headphones
-shitty $4 round headphones on ebay, and remove all wiring
-thick sealed craft foam for animal ears
-driver inside the ear piece, leading the el wire along the ears
And clear vinyl for the bow. Unsure how we're going to do the shatter pattern on there yet though

Hard to say. One thing you could do is look at Asian cosplayers who haven't shooped their skin into oblivion, but the best way is probably to order some samples from Arda or whatever in a range of blondes that you can hold up against your skin. Even if you don't order a wig from the same place you get the swatches, it'll help you decide what kind of blonde to get.

It looks really good so far! If I really had to nitpick I would say that the collar isn't really accurate but the way you altered it still looks good. The sleeve/side trim part should be a bit bigger/longer. Definitely more stripes on the lower blue skirt and you could add a trim to the part on the apron where the ruffles meet the apron skirt.

You need more stripes. Your collar also seems to be fitting awkwardly. It should be constructed like a regular shirt collar, just with the rounded corners. You can search Peter pan collar for some tutorials.

The jacket is about $30 on ebay or aliexpress just look for love live track jacket. The shorts are a little harder to find exactly but if you have a small enough tush there's $5 swim trunks with the right pattern.

+1 for gathered. I'm assuming op's apron is going to sit lower after she adds the waist band tie and adjusts the lower skirt a little so that it'll look more like the reference (less blue skirt showing) and the gathers seem as uneven when you don't see so much of it.

The apron sits MUCH lower now. I haven't gotten the chance to sew the tie on, but this is a little update.
And I personally prefer the gathers. Not entirely sure why, they just sit better in my mind.

At this rate I'll probably be finished by this evening, which is good since the gathering is tomorrow. I'm feeling very productive, if not a bit disappointed that I couldn't find just the right trim in time.
