Fuck off age player.
Lolita is an alternative fashion that people of varying ages wear. If you're here because you want to look like a little girl then kindly fuck off.
>>
>>8605696
Kindly get the salt out of your vag. No one said she's a bad lolita or that she shouldn't wear it. While we're here to appreciate her skills, it doesn't change the fact that she does look very old. Stop white knighting for no reason.
>>
>>8606033
I don't know this girl, but she does not look that old to me. It's not like she looks like she's in her 60s or something.

There's something off about this jacket. I think it's the center panel. It needs interfacing or less buttons or something. The sleeve cuffs could use some ornamentation too. Velvet is a bitch to work with and this might have worked better in a different fabric.

She looks her age you dumb fucks. Saying "she looks so old" is exactly the same as saying " she looks so blond" or " she looks so black" it implies there is something wrong with it and you value the opposite and with that in mind the fashion is for people of all ages and if youre in it because you want to look young/think that's what the fashion is about then you're most likely in to some age play whether you choose to admit it or not.

I don't think its an age player but more likely a school kind who doesn't understand the concept of alternative subcultures and is confusing it with a teenage trend or something.

I mean, she thinks 30 is old and seems genuinely shocked that a 30 year old isn't hiding under a rock and is OUTSIDE EXISTING I remember thinking this way when I was 14.

Oh. I didn't even think of that! The "she LOOKS so old" (As opposed to "she IS old") comment makes a lot more sense now and is actually kind of hilarious. Did she think it was a weirdly old looking teenager? lol
>>
>>8616521
>>8616540
lol god, the kids here. There's this whole gaggle of teens/young people that hit up /cgl/ that seem to think that as soon as you hit 25-28 you have to forsake all your fun hobbies and take up book clubs and wine tasting parties.

We definitely trend a bit younger just because cons are exhausting for people with careers, but "trending younger" for 4chan means that we don't have as many people over 40 as you'll find on the other hobby boards.
>>

Again, lolita isn't about being the "hot" version of anything. She looks fine. You know you need to be 18 to post here, right?
>>
>>
>>8616560
>>8616540
While I agree with you, I don't think she looks like she's in her 30s. At least not early 30s. I'm 29 myself, and most my friends and co-workers are around 30-35. She looks older. I think it's the wrinkles around her mouth. Again, not that it's wrong or looks bad with the fashion etc. And I don't even know how old she really is. But if she is in her early 30s she does LOOK older. So the anon who said that might be right.

>>8616602
Calm down please.
>>
>>8616520
The color and construction are absolutely lovely, but I have mixed feelings about the sheen of the primary fabric.
>>
>>8617226
What fabric is used for this sort of dresses?
>>8616384
this looks a bit like a heavy curtain sort of fabric. Would it be huge faux pas to sew a piece of clothing with "decorational" fabric (the sort of that is used for pillow covers and curtains)?

It seems like that's the only option I have in my country when it comes to printed fabric.
>>
>>8616520
Ooohh wow I love that shimmery fabric.
>>
>>8617299
Personally, I think she looks in her thirties. There's nothing wrong with that, though. Classical lends itself really, really well to this woman and there's nothing wrong with being in lolita despite being older. What are you supposed to do? Hit 25 and then just sell everything off? She looks so elegant and beautiful and to be honest I'd rather hang out with a mature lolita than a 16 year-old lolita.
>>
>>8617505
Lots of lolita dresses are made with heavier fabrics (mainly velvet) so as long as you have petticoats able to lift it, then you should be fine. That's the main issue. Also, try wearing it in colder seasons just to avoid the heat and heavy fabric is much more acceptable in colder weathers.
>>
>>8617522
Thank you very much for the reply, Anon.

Sometimes I find good lolita fabrics in the home decor section. They may have a more interesting texture or just have a better selection of florals (I wear classic). If you look at a lot of printed lolita dresses, they will still have some type of texture of interesting weave. You don't necessarily want heavy, heavy, upholstery fabric, but if you line it and it still has decent drape, don't be afraid to look outside of the regular fabrics section.

>>8617805
Heavy heavy is different to curtain fabric (unless you have intense curtains). The close-up thread really made me feel comfortable looking at heavier fabrics. Haven't found anything good, because I live in a small place. Velvet was just the easiest example I could think of.

I have come to believe that most Lolita's are age players deep down. Pointing out how old someone looks is pretty common, like they are surprised the fashion isn't mostly full of "kawaii" toddler looking girls.
>>
>>8617964
lolita or otome i'd say. it reminds me a lot of ETC for some reason
>>
>>8618026
Pointing out how old someone looks is pretty normal in any sort of fashion community, or even just in gossipy areas/circles in general. Have you never seen a tabloid? They're constantly going on about how so and so has more wrinkles on their forehead than a sharpei and definitely needs botox!!
I think the people who constantly scream that people who look older shouldn't wear lolita are pants-on-head retarded, though. I'm going to dress cute as fuck for as long as I live.

>>
>>8619755
Different anon, but I'm pretty sure that for that print a lot of people bought the fabric directly from them and made their own. That's why there are so many different styles out there. Pretty sure I remember reading on their FB page that they just sold the fabric as well as the few they made themselves.
>>
>>8619781
That one and a few others were made by RAD (their watermark is in the bottom corner). But yes, mostly the fabric was sold on spoonflower.
>>
>>
>>8620065

>>
>>8620070
Ha-ha yes! 2008 if I'm correct. So impressed you remember as I completely forgot I even made that!
>>
>>8620318
I always forget you're on here sometimes...

Have always loved your stuff, and I was getting into lolita in like 2007-08, so my memories of that period are pretty cemented. Those first "big" events between 2007 and 2009, when conventions, first bringing over guests, and letting people run fashion shows. Oh, and TokyoPop was still alive.
>>
>>8619767
I'm an older lolita myself, I get the point and I still think that anon should calm down. Cursing, calling people you've never even seen ugly and generally overreacting at what is pretty much a calm and mature discussion just makes anon and his point look stupid and immature. And that doesn't help anyone.

Does anyone have experience dying fabrics?
I bought white fabric because it was the only one that wasn't shit, but now I'd like to dye it light pink. I'm not sure what kind of fabric it is, I got it at a wholesale place. I also got rit dye in a darkish pink.
Should I cut the pieces first? Dye first? How do I get the dye to evenly sit on such a big piece of fabric?

I've been playing Onechanbara and I love Saki's outfit (pic related). I'd love to make her dress as a main piece for some coords.
Would this be weird? I feel like it'd be less like "cosplay lolita" and more like the Rozen maiden IW line.
But I'd love to hear other people's opinions on this.

>>8622747
Doesn't look like it'll translate well to an actual dress, especially the elongated bodice. Personally I'd try to sketch it/shoop onto a photo of myself to see if it would compliment my figure.
Other than that I see nothing wrong with incorporating loliable items that were not designed with lolita clothing in mind.
>>
How tacky would it be to make a fleece capelet for casual sweet outfits in the winter? I have a more formal coat as well, but I wanted to make something quick to cover other colorways.
>>
>>
What fabric would you recommend for making a school uniform-inspired JSK? It has to be thin enough to make pintucks and preferably come in solid grey.

I think it could work if anon fiddles with the proportions a bit. VM and MM have released quite a few dropped waist cuts with a gathered skirt that can be used as reference.

I'm looking for thick semi-matte ribbon, like what Innocent World uses for some of their accessories (pic related, the solid color part). It's like a very dull satin, and double-sided. I thought it was called "sateen" but Google just gives me results for satin ribbon and it's impossible to judge the shininess from photos. Any ideas on where I could find it?
>>
>>8624675
I wholeheartedly agree. The question is whether Anon has the figure to pull it off. If she's not an hourglass, she might end up looking like a brick or even a balloon with frills. It's a very tricky and unflattering cut.
>>
>>8622747
Honestly anon, I think the dress design is pretty ita by lolita standards, and looks like something Marble would've put out in 2004. You might want to stick to just cosplaying it because after the design adjustments necessary to make it look nice as a lolita dress it wouldn't be recognizable anymore.

Has anyone come across that light yellow lace that Innocent World and Mary Magdalene use? I love that it looks gold against other colours, but isn't as garish as gold lace itself. Been looking up and down Etsy with no luck.
>>
Hopefully this is a good place to ask rather than the general help thread - is there any reason one might not want to do shirring with the elastic thread method rather than the elastic + casing method I've seen most use? For example, would this sort of shirring: http://www.made-by-rae.com/2013/08/tutorial-shirring-with-elastic-thread/ be considered in bad taste for the back of a lolita dress? I'm always surprised by things/techniques more knowledgeable seamstresses turn their noses up at, and I wanted to make sure that this was not one of those things.
>>
>>8631158
Elastic thread shirring tends to be more fragile, is all. It's also common to see on little girls' summer dresses, which some people interpret as having a "cheap" look. Another way to go about it is to actually sew through strips of elastic as well (attaching them directly to the fabric as you stretch the elastic). That's a BIT sturdier than elastic thread, and brands use it for summer pieces that aren't lined, but the channel method tends to just work best because it's sturdy, tidy, and in general looks nicer.
>>
>>8631158
I see this more often with blouses or in small shirring panels that aren't meant to have a good deal of stress put on them. I've only seen bodyline use that method for their shirring on their dresses. The stitches can pop and the elastic can come loose.

I've dyed a blouse, skirt and a giant 4 meter stretch of fabric. Blouse and skirt went fine.
The fabric was orange and REALLY heavy (2kg). I dyed it dark red while I only wanted it tinted slightly more red. The dye was only supposed to be for 600 grams of fabric. I don't know what happened. I was worried it would be blotchy because of the amount of dye not being enough for the fabric but it was evenly covered and as dark as the package.
If you're doing a machine wash like me, I think it won't be a problem to get it evenly covered, but it will be a challenge getting the right shade of pink. Dying is a heck of a job, anon, good luck :/
(Also they're not kidding about wearing gloves. One tiny speck of powder and my finger was blue for days.)
>>
>>8634591
Thanks for the information!
Update on this:
I just went for it. I wanted to dye white fabric pastel pink. But I didn't find light pink dye, so I got "fuschia" rit dye. I found it was too purple-based when I watered it down, so I mixed in some yellow rit dye from a past project. I watered it down a lot, but the samples kept dying too bright. So I dunked a piece for 5 seconds, rinsed it in hot water, then put it aside. I then threw it in the washing machine with hot water and dried it.
I cut out the pieces before I dyed it, but I would not reccomend that. It made for easier and more even dying, but when I washed it, it frayed like a mofo.
All in all a good experience.
>>
>>8633684

Actually i've already sell this skirt, but i'm aiming for concrit for next projects!
What kinda lace do you think? Guipir? I didn't think about it because the skirt was so long with the ruffles (75cm total)

It was very simple, I hope to improve next time. I put it only to hide where the boning was.

general question. I want to start sewing more lolita dresses, but I'm not sure where to start for the design. Should I worry more about getting a decent fabric pattern or spend more time on the overall design and shape of dresses?
>>
>>8640086
Start with the shape. Make things out of nice quality solids before you worry about a fancy print. Otome no Sewing patterns are a good place to start if you already have aa decent knowledge of sewing in general.

>>
>>8657251
She was selling at Rufflecon so I know that most if not all of her inventory went with her. Hopefully she gets more stuff up soon, now that she's not headed for a con any time soon (I assume)
>>
>>8658792
Her time is probably going to be taken up by those commission slots, and then she is going to Dream Fantasy Theater in December so I doubt she will have time to put up any headdresses or hats in her etsy for the rest of this year.
>>
aight so I figured this thread would be better than the halloween thread.

I recently picked up a dress from a thrift store for a witch outfit, the dress is pretty much exactly what I need but it's too small for my wide shoulders and ribcage.

The dress is a chiffon type, kind of drapey dress with a defined natural waist, using a ribbon of some sort to separate the top and skirt. There's a zipper in the side of the dress, from the hip and up to under the armpit. It is v-necked and sleeveless.
I can get it on without issues, and the zipper zips up fine to my waist, but my ribcage is too wide to fit the rest. I was considering whether I could modify it? So far I've considered:

>Creating a corset style lacing in the back
Pros: no hassling with the zipper, does not have to be very visible, easy place to add a modification.
Cons: probably not enough skirt to make a rectangular panel, not sure how much it will better the fit, hard to tie on my own, might make the rest sit weird.

>Undoing the sides and fill them out, either corset style or just plain fabric panels
Pros: will probably give a more accurate fit, possibly easier to put on on my own
Cons: will most likely necessitate me moving the zipper to the back, if not removing it completely, more visible if fuckups happen, more difficult to work with.

A third option is to just use the skirt portion of the dress, but then I'll have to cut through and remake the zipper...
Any ideas? I've made minor alterations before and can sew with confidence, but this type of thing is a first to me.

Can I get some thoughts on unusual color combinations in lolita?

Thinking of doing something like this http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/selaja/14829424/4977/4977_900.jpg

In mustard yellow with a cream underskirt. I've never seen that shade of yellow done before but I think it could be really beautiful. Also considering like a warm orangeish red/terracotta again with cream.

Any color combos you'd personally like to see more of?
>>
>>8606132
damn this would look so much better with better lace. otherwise, the fabric and constructions is lovely
>>
>>8651440
I love this! Are the other pieces (vest, jacket, bow) handmade also?

The skirt is clearly sewn as 'petals' with the bottommost layer not having been hemmed yet - And the bow/vest is cream, not offwhite, so it doesn't clash.
>>
>>8660574
I would hesitate to say this thread is better for a halloween-related question than the halloween thread, as it's mostly for posting photos of pretty handmade lolita dresses rather than discussing sewing techniques for thrifted witch dresses. But I suppose you know best.

That said, I would go with the first option. Instead of cannibalizing the skirt for the panel material, just go pick up a half yard of fabric from Joann's and use that. When you lace the corset, use extra-long ribbon and lace it "upside-down" so that you can tighten the corset yourself, and then loop the ribbon ends around your waist a couple of times and tie it in front. You can use that as the belt, or you can then tie your desired belt over it.
>>
>>8660821
I've seen mustard used as an accent, but I feel like it might be too strong of a colour to work on a dress like that without something to break it up. For example, a floral print with mustard coloured blossoms on a beige background over a cream underskirt could work. But I feel like a solid mustard fabric would be overwhelming.

Alternatively, adding textural elements to break up the solid fabric could work (pintucks or smocking, embroidery or similar).

Terracotta might be a nicer choice overall.

But I guess the final decision is also down to how well those colours suit you, too.
>>
I'm really interested in starting up a little indie accessory brand/side-project type of thing. I don't expect to make oodles of money off of this of course, but I like making my own accessories and I really want to give back to the community, so to speak. I feel as though this may be a broad question, but does anyone have any tips they'd like to share? Preferred selling platforms, getting your name out there, how to price things appropriately, etc.
Dunno if this is the right thread for this, but I don't see an indie lolita thread and also figured I might find more answers here than in LG.

I was gifted this fabric. It's very good quality and thick. Kind of reminds me of curtain fabric but I quite like it anyway.
I've added a gutermann thread spool for size reference.
I don't think it will work for lolita, but could it work for otome?
I was planning to make a simple vintage dress with shoulder pleats and a full rectangle skirt from it.
>>
>>8655258
honest just cut paper crescents until you get the shape you want a deeper inwards curve makes for a higher bonnet and a flatter curve makes for a low sitting forwards bonnet
if youre lazy and wat to make one quick you can use cardboard for the inside but otherwise buckram is the best
