I got to use some new molds last week! I've never worked with glitter before, so that was a bit of a learning process. I think the big diamond one turned out best- I figured out that I had to do any colored pieces in two layers to keep the glitter or powder from sinking to the bottom. The left rectangular frame was cast in two layers- I used copper metallic powder for it, but it turned out kinda brownish. The right one was my first attempt, and it's sort of cloudy from being cast in one layer. The heart frame on the right is a bit less pearlescent from being cast in two layers, but it's brighter and more sparkly. Any tips are appreciated; this was a fun experiment!

Those look really cute! I haven't received any of my frames yet, but I plan on experimenting with eyeshadow. If I have any failures, I'll just paint over them with some gold acrylic stuff. You're right to work in layers. You could use a nail art brush or cocktail stick to very carefully paint the lines on the diamond and rose ones, with nail polish, to make them stand out more. Do a couple of thin layers, wait until it's bone dry, and pour the resin in. When you pop it out it should come out in one piece with no flaking or anything.

Searching stationary and stickers, and oftentimes the words "seal flakes" helps a lot. Got those here, and a lot of others from their store. They didn't get shipped out until Feb 20-something because of chinese new year, and only just arrived the other day. But that's generally how it goes when ordering from Ali. Still waiting on a lot, but I finally got some frame molds in today, and little book lockets that I plan to make lovely covers for.
I'm using amazing casting resin, the kind that cures FAST and opaque. I'm pretty new but I love this mold. The roses on the right are my failed attempts at getting both a color I like and getting it out of the mold in time to fit an eye pin in. The left is my rough draft for a necklace I'm making for a coord.
Anyone else using this resin? I like how fast it cures but the opacity makes it hard to get colors I want (unless I shell out for the specific pigments)

The first few times, probably, but after 2 or 3 tries you should be able to know what you did wrong and how to fix it. Resin is pretty intuitive. Just remember to do everything in layers and suddenly it starts making sense.
Be prepared to have it go everywhere and waste some resin at first. Fuckups are par for the course no matter what you make, so don't get discouraged.
Also, post the results if you do it, we can help you with any issues you have.

Actually most of the problem I had was taking the resin out of the mold too soon to try and get the pin in, so it got deformed before it cured all the way. That's what happened with the pink one at least. But if I keep having problems with it I'll definitely look into slower curing.

That was incredibly stupid but it made me laugh so hard.
Also, try mixing the resin into the eyeshadow bit by bit to make sure it's all mixed in properly and not lumpy. Using something thicker than a cocktail stick and a mixing cup strong enough to withstand a lot of scraping would be ideal.
As for the pin, if you want to attach it to the middle of the back, like an earring post, either put it in when the resin's super tacky but not set and babysit it for a couple of hours or use a blob of resin/glue when it's cured. If you want it on the top and don't want to deform your pieces either drill a hole in and use glue or glue it on with resin and dome the back (first option is better).

Instead of strictly lolita, you could go straight to the fandom stuff like CCS's book, FMA spellbooks, Harry Potter-themed stuff -- I don't think Ginny's journal will be popular, but maybe the monster book with some polymer clay tentacles sticking out would be fun.

...What are you talking about? The UV resin would be expensive but it's not like you need the whole bottle. Everything else is pretty cheap and you can find most if not all the components on eBay.

Just caught a bit of the resin bug looking at these threads so decided to try my hand at it. These are my practice pieces and would like some feedback or suggestions. They're messy I admit but still practicing. The top ones are my first pieces (accidentally broke one) with the bottom being more recent. The stars are lucky star origami that I coated in resin.

If you keep having problems with bubbles with the flowers, you could work backwards. Glue them onto the resin with more resin, carefully pour in thin layers until they're almost covered, pour resin in the middle of the flowers and dome the piece. Unless you're using fresh flowers, in which case the bubbles might be because of that.

You might want to coat the flowers in resin before using them, that can help reduce bubbles. Using UV resin to glue the coated flowers/beads in place and pouring the 2-part resin in while it's thin will also help a lot, since the bubbles will be a lot easier to remove and the piece won't need babysitting.

Basically fresh flowers contain moisture, which is a no-no with resin already. Also if there is any oxygen/airbubbles trapped by the flower it can decay it over time.
You can still try it ofc, but dried flowers will always be less finicky since they contain no moisture and dont run the risk of rotting inside your resin.

Are its head/arms going to be articulated? If so, you're going to have to have separate molds for them. Are you planing on making those tiny flowers on their head resin too? Because I don't think that'll work out very well.
Rwgardless, the tutorials in the op are mainly for small resin stuff with simple shapes that wren't very 3d. Tutorials for making larger items with resin would probably be more of what you're looking for.

This is gonna be a lot more complicated than most of the stuff in this thread.
First off, you're going to have to make the toy, or get a toy that's going to be relatively easy to pull apart and won't stain. Then you need to pull it apart and cast the mold. If you want to make it in a solid colour and paint over it later one mold will do but if not you'll need to make several molds, and you'll need to use liquid silicone, not putty. Then comes the joy of sanding, touching up the toy, and putting it all together.
I don't think you should attempt it if you're a noob simply because you'd waste so much time and resin if you fuck up the ratio or if you get a million bubbles. Play with resin for a bit, get a feel for it, and learn to cast your own molds from liquid silicone before you do this. Resin and silicone last a long time and go a long way, so you won't have to pour a fuckton of cash into it, but it's worth waiting until you know what you're doing before you waste a load of product.
I don't think there are 3D silicone mold tutorials in the doc but I know there are several on Youtube. I know casting resin in a vacuum can apparently reduce the bubbles but it's not really necessary- just pour the resin in slowly while it's super runny and keep coming back to pop the bubbles at the top and you should be fine.

It cures extremely hot when exposed to UV and yellows like nobodies business unfortunately.

Also the brand of resin was Solarez by Wahoo. (It's not the super thin kind, but under the crafts and casting category.)
What's weird is that this resin when UV cured, it doesn't cure right. But you do have the option of curing it with a hardener too.
Also the resin itself gives off EXTREMELY strong fumes. I tried this stuff out to find a brand that's domestic (USA based) and a little bit cheaper than buying Padico stuff.
I guess I should just spend a little more for Japanese UV resins since they hold true to curing fine under UV and that they smell substantially less.......
Not sure if this would be helpful to anyone but I made some test pieces to try a new mold I got and glazed them in different ways. I typically dome with resin (first time using UV resin) but I was curious of other ways I've read.

Yeah I love the acrylic spray one too because it's a bit easier than dealing with doming resin something like this and has a similar effect. The acrylic spray I used is Rust-oleum Painter's Touch 2X Ultra Cover in Gloss Clear.
As for the paws, I'm super happy with this mold, I just need to be a bit more careful with bubbles.. I'm considering doing neko atsume themed ones.

So I been looking up tutorials and I have been failing to see anything related but how do I make a necklace like pic related? I think it's still called beading. I don't think there's a term for that specific technique in English, annoyingly enough. They're using eye pins and chaining them together. It's a pretty standard technique. It's a little finnicky at first but you get better at it really fast. I find it fun but it's heavy on the hands so I can't make many necklaces in a row.
I wouldn't know if there are sellers that sell that as is. That's a pretty good question!

I see a lot of UV resin tutorials using nail lamps and small UV light torches when working with little increments layers. I don't imagine it has to be overly powerful. The items looked a bit cheap. Doesn't hurt to try a small torch for $3 off amazon or something before you invest in something else expensive.
This isn't my first time casting but it is the first time I feel I made something worthwhile. I still have a ways to go regarding gradients in resin. The frames are still getting bubbles. But I think I like he finished product enough to use it myself.

You need some round nose pliers and some eye pins. It's tricky to get right and it can seem tedious at first, but eventually you'll get it down so don't get discouraged. I think I HAVE seen chains being sold on aliexpress but I think it's more rewarding to make it yourself. Plus you learn the skill.

i struggle with this. this is what i figured out: in time, you will get better AND faster. i realized my newer handbeaded pieces were priced lower than my older, less polished handbeaded pieces, because of the time difference alone.
so when you calculate, keep in mind that the time you take as a beginner is much longer than the time you will take a year or two from now. however you factor this into your pricing is up to you. i am honestly unsure how to account for it. i think i may give myself a "raise" of my per hour rate, like a little promotion since i have become more effecient.

No resin expert, but coating things with detail with definitely reduce the chance of bubbles. The rose piece looks like it has raised edges and a bevelled inside, meaning more surface area, aka. microcorners for the air to stay when the item is submerged and then, while the resin sets, it sort of pushes together all those tiny bubbles and creates a larger one. A thin, doming layer definitely helps even out that bumpy surface.
More surface area = more everything. Bacteria, air, water etc.
Speaking of bacteria, does anyone sterilise items before putting them in resin? I've heard stories (mostly about plants that haven't been dried) going into resin and moulding/cracking the resin with anaerobic bacteria gas and I'm wondering if this has ever happened on any other embedded items that are natural, like rocks, shells, etc. for anyone?

I just use a normal nail lamp and it works great.
I'd say what you need to look out for are bubbles, accidentally exposing it to UV light before it's ready to cure, and the usual problems with dust and things.
Bubbles are an absolute bitch to get rid of because the resin's so thick, warming it a little and pouring it in really thin layers seems to be the best way to eradicate the damn things.
If you're embedding things, work in super thin layers. Make a thin base layer, cure it, use a dab of resin to stick the stuff down, cure it, and so on. It takes longer but you get way better results.

As a former nail tech, I have met and worked with people who use $20 ebay UV nail lamps to cure gel and it seems to work fine. I'd get one of those since they have 180 coverage and timers so you don't accidentally leave the lights on.
I'm basically buying UV resin so that I don't put my $250 nail lamp to use. It was part of my kit at school.

Like the other anon said the bottom left are great. I made an "oooh" noise. It would be nice to see that technique in more molds when you get them. I like those and the white personally but others would probably be interested in purchasing the different colours.
Also I think the organised ombre suggestion would make the bottom right nicer to look at. The blue is a bit too heavy on the upper feathers if that makes sense. Either try the tier effect or try to make the gradient even more gradual.

A bracelet like >>8951090 shouldn't take you more than an hour once you've got the technique down. Probably more like half an hour. The necklace in >>8950819 will take much longer because there's around four times as many beads. If you need the necklace to be beaded all around, I'd say it's wise to look into buying it ready-made. When I make necklaces I only bead close to the pendant, like pic related. That's not even half as many beads per necklace. Works well for necklaces with one pendant, not so much for multiple smaller charms like the moonbunny one.

You use alcohol based inks or resin pigments to colour the resin and leave it translucent, powders or resin pigments if you want a solid colour. You can also do a layer of clear resin and a much smaller layer of coloured resin.
As for the molds PLEASE CHECK THE PLASTIC. Resin can melt that shit. Also, use mold release. If you don't, you will not be getting the resin out. There are very similar resin-specific molds for cheap online that I'd recommend using, because palettes are super flimsy.

Mix the colours and wait for the resin to become slightly thicker before pouring if you want to do an ombre effect. Don't wait too long or it'll be thick enough to trap all the bubbles.

The colours I just winged it using mica powders and UV Resin. Mica powders (at least the ones I got) have a shimmer to them so when you stir it you can create wispy effects and mix separate colours then I mixed them loosely together. It is easier with UV resin since it is thicker and you can set it really fast using UV lights. I am struggling a bit with 2 part resin a bit but practice makes perfect I guess.

I'm thinking a thin layer of resin, then some iridescent nail wrap foil - I was considering cellophane as I suspect it will "thin" in contact with resin, but I can't be sure.
The other option is to rub it onto the finished piece and then varnish/dome to protect it.
I've googled it but haven't found many results.

You need to divide the resin into parts, mix the resin with something to color it, then very carefully pour it into the mold. You can also add the coloring into the resin after pouring but I don't recommend it, it's too likely to be lumpy (if you're using powders) or run into the non-colored part (if it's liquid or you're too enthusiastic). It takes a bit of time to get right but it's easy once you learn when to pour and how much resin/pigment to add.

I use glow in the dark powders, eyeshadow and pastels. You need to really mix them in super well because that shit gets super lumpy. I take a couple of new cups and put the powder in, then mix it with enough resin to make a paste and slowly add more in, let it sit for a bit to let the bubbles rise and mix it every so often if it's a heavy powder that tends to sink (like glow in the dark powder).

paint the details with a thin level of resin first, then fill the mould
tip: when doing two-layer charms, don't demold until you have completed the second layer. i demolded mine after the first layer had cured because of anxious curiosity to see if they had turned out all right. i replaced them into the molds and did the second layer, which leaked below the first, cured layer.
i am going to try to scrape the leakage off and dome the fronts which will hopefully fix the issue. bummed that i did not realize the molds would not remain airtight once the seal was broken.

For those of you who put pictures in frames, how do you seal the paper? I've used modpodge, and found it to be annoying.

I did some experimenting when I first got my glossy photo paper (Epson) and attempted doming. I use mod podge as well. When both of my examples dried, I was shocked to find that mod podge had caused more bubbles, and a somewhat noticeably streaky film from the brush strokes. I was also suprised to find that the unsealed paper had no discolouration or distortion from direct contact with the resin. It's still necessary to hold in the resin, though. This is how I go about it.
I apply mod podge around the edges of the back of the frame. (But not the inner edges)
Then I press the image against the back, and adjust as necessary until it's right where I want it lined up.
It might smear a bit around the inner edges of the images, but since it dries clear, it's not that big of a deal.
After that, I glob on mod podge over the back. Making sure everything is sealed, especially around the corners. Bigger globes can help with uneven edges, but will take longer to dry.
Wait for all of it, front -and- back to be perfectly dry and clear. I leave them face down at this point.
Flip 'em over and pour the resin into the inner frame, and all of the mod podge edges are invisible. Even if they aren't, you'll only have an issue on a small edge that no one is going to notice, as opposed to a big streaky mess all over.

I just paint them on and then seal with a glossy acrylic spray (like was discussed above!) If you want to add details on the front of pieces once they've cured, definitely look at sprays. Re-doming over already slick resin is such a pain in the ass.

I did some pieces to use up and test some shit with some old resin I had and thought, "why not paint on it?" just to do something extra with them. Super happy with how they look, thought I'm definitely going to try some other things with the next one I'm doing for Chibi Usa.
I just took my first batch of charms out of the mold, I mixed too much resin at once and it started hardening before I finished putting in the second layer of resin and I ended up with pretty bad bubbles in some of my pieces (especially the light blue ones in the first pic). Is there any way to fix the holes the bubbles left? Overall, I'm pretty happy with how these turned out, most of them came out better than I expected!
