The last thread left off with some discussion about the Vanishing spin-off. I just started it last night and watched about 4 episodes and I have to say it is delightful. It's nothing like the original show at all, but if you watch it while keeping in mind that this is the world Nagato wished for then it doesn't feel any less "canon." Mainly though, it's just nice to see Nagato happy. For anyone unsure about it, bear in mind the first episode is not representative of the whole.

I enjoyed the manga to a point, but I couldn't get on with the anime after knowing the story beforehand. This alternate canon Yuki is just some generic moe girl. Main canon Yuki has some more subtle development and behaviours, and her Disappearance self is an expression of her inner desires and frustrations. Spin-off Yuki is so empty by comparison.

Original Yuki was a great tragic character, yes, but spin-off Yuki is the simple girl with the simple life that original Yuki wished she had.

The whole point of the movie is that the wish was a mistake though. The time bubble is a metaphor for the imaginary shell that she crawls into to deal with her depression, and kyon alone is able to break her out of that shell and remind her that the real life is worth living. It's basically the same as the end of evangelion except done well and with less shamanistic freudian bs.
Alt yuki is just a facade she puts up to pretend she is happy. I want the real yuki.

Was it? Everyone was happier in that world expect for Kyon. Yuki was finally able to be a real person, and she ws able to pursue her infatuation with Kyon without Haruhi and Mikuru being in the way (as much). Likewise, Koizumi was now able pursue his own infatuation with Haruhi without fear that it was confuse her and thus destroy the universe. By sending the two of them to a different school, Yuki allowed their relationship to happen without Kyon complicating it. Ryoko is alive and relatively not crazy (in the series, not so much the movie) and everyone is friends with everyone. There is no danger of closed spaces, Koizumi, Mikuru, and Yuki are all free of their responsibilities to keep the universe from being destroyed and can instead focus on friendships.
The only people who are better off in the original universe are Kyon and Haruhi, because they were bored in the happy universe.
