So I'm thinking about getting a dachshund as my first dog.

Do anyone here own a dachshund? Got any insights or fun stories to share?

Never owned one but I looked after one when my friend and his gf went on holiday. She was the sweetest little creature I have ever seen, never played up and only required mild exercise before she napped. Very easy. His gf says that most of them are like this.

There was this one fucker that would bark at everyone and bite them... Hard. Fuck that dog.

Make sure you keep them lean, extra weight can be hard on their backs. Don't let them jump up on the couch or bed either.

My grandpa has one and he's a sweetheart. Really great dog. Food crazy like most hounds.

I inherited a dachshund from my late grandmother. Or more precisely, my mother did, but I have to deal with him because I come from work earlier. I hate this elongated asshole.

Doesn't bite, but every time there's more then one person in the room he singles out one he likes the least and barks at them whenever they move. And this someone is usually me.

They are in the "love em or hate em" camp. People either think they are the best doggos ever with the most amazing awesome personalities, or are annoying, yappy, dumb pieces of shit.

As an owner of a hound mix (the hound comes across very strong in his temperament), just do research. Hounds are notoriously stubborn and prone to "selective listening". They also have a very... unique musk as well. They are also highly, highly food driven, and positive punishment and negative reinforcement often just do not work on them. So basically, so your research and understand what you are getting into by taking a hound dog home.

Make sure they get plenty of exercise. Pic related is my grandma's.

Whoops. Let's try this one.

OP here. Thanks for the replies.

My sister has one from her bf and that one is adorable.

I understand that having a puppy is tremendous work and nothing easy, so gonna have to research a lot of stuff.

>keep them lean
This is the most important part
My Sophie was so overweight when my mom rescued her that her belly dragged the ground

Being overweight can cause their health issues to get worse faster. Finding a reputable breeder will be like finding a needle in a haystack, but it's important to not promote the incredibly shitty ethics around dachshund breeding. Working doxys are generally healthier, both genetically and especially structurally, however they are working dogs and would not be suited in most pet life styles. If you want on for cheap, go down south and find one running the streets. Do not let them get small dog syndrome, train them well. Dachshunds are some of the more aggressive and difficult to do anything with dogs that I have ever had to care for because people don't properly socialize or train them. Please don't let yours be an unhealthy, overweight little shit.

I got two mini longhairs. I've had short hair in the past. There's a definite difference in temper, the long hair is the most chilled out of the three coats - they have more spaniel in them whereas the shorts have more terrier so they tend to be yappier and more snappy (like a terrier!).

They're not an easy breed. They're very difficult to house break and stubborn as hell. They're not toy dogs either, they're hounds so will hunt small mammals and will kill them. They're excellent diggers and not such great swimmers. They can be difficult to have in a family, dachshunds tend to latch onto one person and that becomes their leader/safety. This means dachshunds can be cold or snappy with other members of the family. They're quite prone to separation anxiety and tend to do better in pairs especially if you plan on leaving them alone whilst at work etc.

The longhairs don't need grooming, just a regular brush to keep the knots out. The breed is very protective of the owner and need socialising whilst young to get them used to kids (loud big things scare them). They can actually walk for miles but will be lazy if you don't bother walking them long distances.

As everyone else said, don't let them jump (good luck though they will jump) and careful handling as the spine is delicate. Make sure you are careful when picking a dachshund - wirehair dachsies can sometimes have something called Lafora (you can look it up) and the breed in general is prone to PRA. Make sure the puppy/dog has been tested and is either clear or a carrier.

They're a great little doggy, a lot of personality in their little bods. But they are hard work to train and can go 'deaf' on walks and run after squirrels etc as any other hound would. They tend to live about 15-18yrs old.

We have a long haired standard x mini short haired.

They are a breed you need to do your homework on before you just think "oh they look cute Ill get one'.

Ours has an insanely high drive, obedience is a must including impulse control.

Ill list some pros and cons

Pros:
Good looking dogs

Very cuddly

Fearless

A good alert dog to compliment a chilled out guardian breed

Obedient

Takes being in a pack very seriously

Very high pain tolerance

Once your on eachothers level a simple "No" and a finger snap will suffice as a correction

Lives a long time

Cons:

They bay when they play

If its raining heavily outside they will toilet inside

Theyre a challange to house train, you must be consistent and communicate to the dog exactly what you want, positive praise and punishment.

Must feed high quality food to keep them in shape.

Seperation anxiety (we are working on it currently).

Not a dog I will turn my back on with kids for even a split second.

Very thin needle like puppy teeth, small sharp adult teeth.

Likes to nip when playing (seems to be growing out of it).

Man, where the hell did you get one that's half gecko?!
>>

hate 'em, dumb as rocks, much improved mixed-breed as they're such inherent shit, except as gimmick breeds like mini/chiweenie, which are just as fucking insane but with bonus seizures
>>
Hit-or-miss the dog.
Grandparents had one when I was a kid and he was chill af, only nipped me when I was being an annoying cunt, and even then not hard enough to hurt.

However
My old neighbor had one
And this thing was a fucking satanic fuckface, barked constantly whenever it saw me or my doggo, tried to get through the fence to attack us (I have a bloodhound, so like 10x the size of the fucking weiner dog)

There is nothing I love more than my dachshund.

That being said, like others have stated in this thread, they can difficult to train. My dog is great about going potty outside now but in the beginning if there was even a drizzle he'd be a total asshole about it. The selective hearing thing I don't mind so much because I think it's hilarious.

They are fiercely loyal and pack a lot of personality. They don't demand too much exercise (which is great with me) and in many ways he's the reason why I've been able to deal with a lot of anxiety.

I would say for your first dachshund get a long-hair, since they tend to be more mild mannered and easier to train and socialize (at least that was the experience of my grandmother).
