APBTs are in reality very bad protection animals because they are so social and outgoing with strangers. Despite this, they are definitely the most feared breed of dog out there. So it's a bit of a toss up; have a shitty protection dog that everyone is scared of, or a good one that no one fears.
A protection dog should be coming from a breeder that specifically breed animals that could be personal protection animals. The training needs to start young and with a professional. Protection dogs attack on command, they do not just attack everyone or 'sense' danger in a person. While it would be harder to teach a APBT this, it's not impossible. The point of a protection dog is to immobilize a threat until a) you get a gun, b) you can tie/handcuff threat and wait for authorities or c) get out of harms way then call your dog to follow

Get a pit mix rescue. Don't teach it to attack people, though. Pits are naturally protective pack animals and territorial. Treat it well and it would sacrifice it's self in a heart beat to save you.
Don't train it to be an attack dog, though. It's not necessary and can backfire.

Get a mastiff type dog, theres a few breeders breeding mixes with "hybrid vigour" and little health issues.
My cousin has 3 dogue de bourdeux and 2 neo x dogues on his farm. The 2 neo x brothers had a fight so theyre kept seperate but his pack of mastiffs are great guards, theres 2 females and 2 males and its interesting to watch them work as you approach the front gate. The neo x is up front with other 3 staggered back towards the house in order of their pecking order in the pack.
He has never had an intruder into his compound so it is a deterrent as much as a physical form of protection.
