I got my hamster nibbles 3 weeks ago. Ever since i got him i noticed that he would move slowly, not run on his wheel or run at all, and sleep a lot. At first i thought maybe he was just lazy but today i picked him up and noticed he has pic related. Idk what it is and hes probably had it since i got him. I think maybe he got that from the petstore either from poor care or fighting with the other hamsters. Please /an/ idk what to do. Its 3:00am so no vet is open and i feel really bad for not noticing or suspecting anything sooner. I love animals and i just dont know what to do. Should i put him down myself (freezing) or will he be able to make it? Please i need help

You're a terrible owner OP.
I really hope you never get another pet.
This is inhumane.

I did everything right for him i got his a big ass cage with the best stuff i could get him. Dont tell me im a bad owner when theres animals being neglected and abused asshole
>>
That looks really bad, OP. You need to take your hammy to a vet. That is a very advanced wound, how is it that you are only just noticing it? If he's been this sluggish since you got it, it's possible that he had this wound at the pet store and it wasn't noticed by the staff.

If you think the hammy won't make it, freezing isn't a good way to put down an animal. See the American Veterinary Medical Association's website for guidelines on at home euthanasia for small animals. You just need some vinegar and baking soda. The hamster will fall asleep and asphyxiate.

Freezing is not a humane death for hamsters. I'd say call your local exotic emergency vet when you can, but don't expect it to be cheap. And now you know why it's never a good idea to buy pets at a pet store.

Alternatively you can bring him back to the pet store and demand a refund/new one but they may not allow it if it's been past two weeks.

>>2136525 I would give nibbles a chance.....I've had hammies survive worse,so take him to the vet and care for him...good luck nibbles!
Also freezing is a horrible death.

>he got a pet with some medical issue and is actively trying to find a way to cure or fix it.
how the fuck does this make him a bad owner you condescending little shit. hang yourself and rot in hell cunt.

bring it to the vet OP.
>>
Veterinary care for a hamster is surprisingly expensive, but it's your best shot. That hammy needs antibiotics. In the meantime, keep the cage as clean as you can while disturbing him as little as possible. Hard to do, I know.
>>
>>2136525
Had a guinea pig with a cyst that killed her (a scuffle bite turned infection even through quarantine and antibio), hammy may be done for bro. Give it the best life possible. Vet is a 100% need to though.

If it comes to it the baking soda guy is right. You can also just use an airtight box and pump helium into it.

God speed.
>>
OP here. I took nibbles to the vet today and tomorrow im picking him up. the vet said id have to give him antibiotics but its a pretty fatal infection and its up to him to recover. Thanks /an/

I guess it was something similar to this. The vet called that Wet Tail, and it is apparently a rater frequent infection among young hamsters.
Basically it was a diarrhea that led to deshydratation.

Jesus Christ this thread is mindfucking me

Why?

Op again. Nibbles has gotten better and has started to run on his wheel again. His injury still smells though even after being cleaned by the vet.

Keep taking care of him and it will go away ;-)
Glad to see him doing better...

Btw, never freeze an animal, it's cruel
Just chop their head off with a meat cleaver LOL
>>
>>2140460
You do need to help keep the injury clean, too. Take a warm damp washcloth to it every day and put some type of antibiotic cream on it, preferably one meant for animals but I have just used polysporin.
Keep his cage extra clean while he is healing, at least weekly total cleaning and replacing of all his bedding and all of that. Daily if you can manage/afford it. Try to use a bedding that isn't too dusty. I've never had a hamster, not sure what is best for them.
