Good news everyone, not only is my bamboo shrimp alive, it seems my tank has stabilised as no more cherry shrimp have died.
I can see at least 20 shrimpletts, 10 young adult shrimp, and 3 berried females.

There are aquaponics guides that use 55 gallon drums. They say you can put ten fingerlings in there and harvest when they're about a pound, 6-8 months later. Keeping the water clean without the hydroponic aspect would probably just be a matter of weekly water changes, or you can try to rig up a grow bed and grow some fruits and veggies.

you'll actually need quite a lot of space between the two for things like reef lighting and cooling for that lighting and access to the inside of your reef tank.
either way you'll probably need the top tank on a platform that can slide or rotate away, which will take some work since a 30g weighs about 300 lbs.
Personally I wouldn't do it, you need to get into the top of a reef tank fairly often.

So I just started working at a local pet store a few weeks ago, not much an expert on fish or aquarium technicalities or any of that, my smarts are with reptiles and amphibians.
That being said, one of the girls in the aquarium department offered for me to help her get some fish and crabs out of our saltwater aquarium for some lady.
Lol guys this lady was fucking crazy. She got an Emerald Crab, a red-something'd Hermit Crab, a Hawk Fish, and a Yellow-Tailed Damsel. On top of that, she got a baby Pleco and some other freshwater fish (I wasn't there when she got those). And like 8 pounds of live rock. My manager asked if she had any other fish in the aquarium, and she told us that this was her second batch after her boyfriend "forgot to put salt in the fishes' water".
Like how does that even happen? I've never even owned fish since I was a little kid, much less a saltwater tank, but this is crazy. She said she was putting them all in a 20 gallon tank. Like I said, I'm no fish expert, but I feel like that might be too small. And I'm pretty sure she bought the salt for the tank with these fish. Aren't you supposed to have that shit set up before you put them in there?
She kept asking if she could return them if they died, but we have a no-return policy with saltwater fish specifically. My manager even told her that she was taking a gamble with the purchase and everything because of the policy, but she was adamant on buying all of these fish. She wanted an urchin and a sea star we had there too, but they were new and still getting acclimated and weren't for sale yet. She told me that she heard that "those spiky things" shoot their quills at fish and eat them.
Yeah that's how it goes at the pet store, nothing I don't understand. I just thought it was crazy and wanted to know if this shit triggered people with actual knowledge of saltwater tanks.

I used to rule the Reptile & Amphibian Generals. I made every thread as they died and made most of the helpful posts for over a year. Then I got banned for cruelty to animals or such. It was very non-specific. I had no idea what I did. But in the process, they deleted all my posts going back a week a so. These were long, helpful posts. Probably cumulatively 12+ hours of writing. I've had the same experience with gardneris kept them in a 20h that was relatively heavily planted and even with a mix of corries and tetras in addition to them i still ended up with fry making it to adulthood at a decent rate. other killis though are harder to breed.
recently i picked up a group of least killii (Heterandria formosa not realy a killi) they're a fun live bearing nano fish that i'm planing on using as feeders once i get a colony going.

Amanos would be extremely difficult to breed as the larvae need high salinity brackish water, which is then shifted to freshwater as they grow older.
Glowlight tetra eggs and fry are sensitive to bright light, but otherwise unfussy.
Zebra danios are about as easy and straightforward as you can get for egg scatterers.
For any egg laying fish, you're going to need a source of extremely small food to start the fry off on. Buying commercial foods such as Micro Pearls, culturing infusoria, or using dense, mature plant growth such as java moss are options.

I have a Neon Tetra that got Neon Tetra disease (at least I think? It was all the same symptoms), and it survived. It has a bent spine but it's all fine now, thing has been alive and kicking for months, it's the biggest tetra out of all of mine even.

All that protein they shit out and fertilize is a big deal. Its an evolutionary thing. They need to reproduce but they need that protein back too.
With all egglayers, it's very simple to breed them. Just make them happy and fat and then take them out of the tank. You'll have a hundred fry in two weeks.

Pea puffers are rather involved for a beginner fish (need live/frozen food, messy, need to be good about water changes).
Betta would be easy if you can keep the tank above 76F. If you need a heater a 25 watt one on eBay is $8 or so.
2-3 Endlers would be pretty easy, but only get males. The tank isn't big enough for them to have babies.
Cherry shrimp are pretty easy for most people, but others have a lot of trouble with them.
Nerite snails are virtually indestructible.
2-3 African dwarf frogs would be fine in there. Stores sell dry pellets for them, but they do a lot better on live or frozen food.
There are several other options, but they're either more difficult to take care of or hard to find.

The plants are enough to keep the tank cycled. I've been testing the water every three days or so to make sure, because I'm paranoid.
So far, nitrates have never gotten above 40-ish. It's just two shrimp and a snail in there, so the bioload is really low.
Walstad came up with a guide specifically for setting up unfiltered shrimp bowls. The most important part is having floating and/or emersed plants, since their a lot more efficient at cleaning and oxygenating the water.

Okay, cool. The frozen food is fine, but that floats a while in the tank water where they seem more comfortable eating. I'll give it time and see if they eat off the sand bed after a few more feeds of the pellets.
Any signs of distress I should watch out for in clownfish? They were hugging one corner yesterday but as soon as the lights went out they were all over the tank. Now they're sticking to the tank front a bit, but apart from that look really energetic for now, hardly seem to stop. All my parameters and water flow are good.

Is there a snail I can put in my clawed frog's aquarium to control diatoms? Preferably something large enough for the frog not to try and eat. I've been keeping the light off and all that, but the diatoms keep on trucking, albeit at a slower pace.
They get all up in the fake plant leaves I have in there and it's a massive pain to get them out

My salamander tank still gets diatoms after four years thanks to pool filter sand. Nerites are great for diatoms, but not with a salamander.

Betta do fine in 5 gallons. Mystery snails get kind of big and are master shit factories, so it wouldn't have been my first choice for a tank that size. I'd be more concerned about putting some more tall plants or decor in there.
Most people here are going to tell you that the pink (red?) gravel and plastic decorations are tacky, but you do you. If you want some advice on doing a more natural setup with live plants and bogwood, let us know. No pressure.

Any ideas of some non-cheesy ways to liven up my marine tank? I'm letting it mature and probably need better lights (my LEDS look nice but only £30 and perhaps not powerful enough) before I can put corals in, and it's looking a bit bare with just live rock, two clowns and a couple of snails/hermit crabs.

yeah ended up returning the cories to the pet dealership, and on top is some duckweed, might get rid of half of it because it seems to have grown a lot more than i expected in 2mo, the shrimp seem to enjoy an infinite amount of places to hide and explore with how overgrown the tank is
