Also something about them being able to break your neck with one swipe of their paw. I think......
>>
>>2038925
That's not really a good argument, we domesticated wolfs.
>>
Are bears basically just very large dogs??
>>
>>2038932
why the fuck would they be?
>>

2-3 cubs per year, when captive can multiply quickly.

Not true.

Won't be a problem when domesticated

True.

>can be dangerous even if they don't mean to with their massive weight and claws
So can great danes and cats

Are you mentally retarded or just bait
>>
I think we could have done it if we did it early enough. They evolved from very dog like carnivores, but they were pretty huge too so you'd probably have to go back even farther.

Even if we tried to domesticate them now, we would have to downsize them considerably. Theyre just too dangerous. Even at the size of a great dane theyre dangerous.
>>
>>2038992
Is there a way we could make them great dane sized but more agile?
>>
>>2038993
>more agile
The fuck you want them to be a cheetah? Bears are ninjas.
>>
>>2039024
Yeah. Slimmed down a bit so they're not so rolly pollie
>>
>>2038908
Takes too long to mature and have kids. Sleeps half the year. Costs a lot of food, no use today aside from movies and circus.
>>
>>2039030
fuck no, if i'm gonna get a bear I want a full size bear not some small as fuck bullshit, I want a polar bear.
>>
>>2039036
Why are armies around the world not using bears nowadays? Seems to me they would be really usefull in some circumstances...
>>
>>2038908

Obviously part of it has to do with the question of usefulness. There are better animals to eat. There are better beasts of burden. There just doesn't seem much use in domesticating a bear.

The second thing is, if you look at the animals that we have successfully domesticated, they're either easy to control (e.g. chickens), or else they share some sort of evolutionary qualities with people.

Dogs are the best example. They're not only social animals, they're also very hierarchical, so they take orders easily from members that are higher on the chain of command. If you put a dog with a group of humans, it will use its natural pack instincts to become a member of the group.

Bears don't have the kind of evolutionary social quality that meshes well with humans.
>>
>>2039038
>they would be really usefull in some circumstances
Such as?
>>
>>2038931
Wolves aren't an apex, faggot. If you separate a wolf from a pack it will be easy prey for something larger.
>>
>>2038931
A mountain lion could kill a separated wolf.

Wolves have a social hierarchy that we can insert ourselves into and take charge off.

Bears don't
>>
>>2039149
> could

It's highly doubtful that a catamount would go after a wolf. They know what wolves are and the risk/reward wouldn't be worth it unless the wolf was already injured or sick.
>>
>>2038925
there's a difference between domestication and taming/keeping an animal in captivity
domestication is a breeding process where aggression is bred out of an animal.
>>2039138
they pretty much are, though. top of its food chain = apex predator, pack behavior doesn't factor in here. you may as well go "humans aren't at the top of the food chain, put one unarmed in a tank with a shark and see what happens"
>>
they're not dogs

they tried the same with hyenas. didn't work
>>
>>2039051
>Such as?
Cuddling.
>>
>>2038908
Why should we?

Because "dey r so awsome, I'm so random lol"?

Are you the same kind of anon who asks stupid questions about why certain animals you made up didn't turn up through actual evolution?

again, keeping something in captivity =/= domestication. domestication's a process that takes many generations of breeding to happen.
Like those domestic russian foxes that are expensive as fuck. These little fuckers took 50 years of breeding.
the reason we don't do this shit with bears isn't because it's not possible, but because it'd be expensive and take a longass time, especially with a bears reproductive rate. The only reason the domestic fixes exist is because the soviets paid some scientist to do it.
>>
>>2039301
Cuddle your comrades instead, they need it.

Don't kid yourself.

Domestic horses serve no purpose these days. They are either kept for hobby or tradition. Neither one serving a purpose.
>>
>>2039397
What's the part where I said that cats serve a purpose?

>>
>>2039397
you live in a city, don't you?

horses can go places you can't take an ATV, they are also fantastic therapy animals.
>>
>>2039400
Cat's aren't used for pest control. all they do is shit up the environment by killing anything and everything they can. Whether good or bad, therefore becoming the real pest.
>>
>>2039407
I am not going to get into this argument with some autists on /an/. I am not for or against the whole cat argument but cats are used for pest controls regardless of how they effect the animals.
What is the definition of a pest a nuisance or something that is harmful something meaningful, this definition varies from person to person.
People hate rats, rats are believed to spread disease, rats get into grain and houses hence rats are considered pests by most people even though they are great and clean animals.
Rats are generally considered pests, cats are introduced to kills rats.

Most people hate rats, most people prefer the cat to the rat and most people do not give a fuck about damages cats do other than rats. Thats the world we live in, cats are used for pest control and they are better at it than terriers even if they are genocide on four legs.

They have a common ancestor, but there are pretty big differences in anatomies and social behavior

I dont think you could domesticate a bear. They arent very smart, they are super aggressive, and they like to roam

Beta wolves probably began hanging around human settlements eating the trash.
I imagine the more docile the pup the closer they could get.
Wolves have family structure similar to humans too. Alpha wolves are often the mommy and daddy wolf.
Whereas bears eat their young all the time, the males use cubs as a food source and females will eat their cubs if things get bad.
>>
>>2039870
>Beta wolves probably began hanging around human settlements eating the trash.
>I imagine the more docile the pup the closer they could get.
is it not already studied thoroughly how wolves were domesticated? i mean i know that humans that early didn't write anything down but i'd assume it wouldn't be too hard to reconstruct? especially because wolves are still easy to observe.
>>
Test
>>
>>2039907
Yeah it's pretty well studied actually, but there is always a lot to find out
We recently discovered that wolf packs were family units.
We didn't know why alpha females took over other female's litters till then

You are stupid, he is agreeing with your sentiment to a degree. He never stated they have disease. He even seems sceptical of it himself.

And this is why in life you have issues with getting your point across. Take a minute to breathe and read his statement. The truth usually lies somewhere in the middle.
>>
>>2039662
Lol idiot. Have you ever seen a police horse work? They turn them on their sides to make blockades and push people back. They can access areas that vehicles can't like malls. They emit less carbon pollution that police seige and riot vehicles. They also don't set the same precedent that a police blockage vehicle would. They look less aggressive. You are kinda just arguing now for the sake of it.

Yep, like in Ireland where people are so broke they started giving up their cars because horses are cheaper to upkeep. It seeped into music out there...

>>
>>2039298
It's not that it didn't work, it's that it wasn't continued/not enough rich people to do it due to cultural status. Same with cheetahs. Only a select culture or two kept them around for so long where you have wolves or cattle that have been domesticated separate times across the world.

These days we also know what to look for in domestication. They might have just bred what they deemed the strongest, rather than the most docile.
