>Argument 1: a cat is meant to gorge and then fast, so should be fed twice a day
>Argument 2: a cat is meant to catch lots of tiny animals throughout the day, so should be fed small amounts multiple times

neither.
nature doesn't intend.
cats eat when food shows up. Sometimes that's several times a day. Sometimes it's never.

How you feed your cat really depends on the animal. My cats do well on a grazing diet, they don't over eat and are a good weight. My friend's cat needs to be kept on a schedule because he over eats if given the opportunity and needs to lose weight. Do what works or your vet instructs, not what some random person on the internet tells you to do.
I get what you're asking op. Based on the size of what a cat eats, I would guess domestic cats have adapted to eating small meals regularly. A mouse can be caught and eaten quickly, but it probably makes up 5% of the cats mass. Big cats are likely adapted to surviving off labor intensive but high reward meals that they share and pick at. A wildebeest provides energy for multiple members over a long period.

Just a theory to an interesting question btw not sure if there's actual research behind this
